Friday my 1966 bathroom sink and P trap rusted out, water and yuck everywhere! I spent the weekend replacing the vanity/countertop, sink, faucet, P trap and put a cupboard over the toilet. I bought most of the stuff at Lowes (very helpful people) and the pipes at Ace Hardware (they know the secrets that aren't in the instructions). I did it all myself (63 year old gal) and I'm sore but happy! We can do whatever we need to.

Finished- just need to paint

You are my HERO!!!! If I ask hubby to do anything around the house, he has a fit! Next time something needs done, I think DD and I will tacke it our selves.

kwhite 07-11-2011 09:36 AM

Great job!! This is my secret. If I need soething done around the house like this I will ask DH twice. Then I will begin the job myself when he is due home soon. When he walks in and sees me with whatever it is in peices I get moved out fast and before you know it, it is done. I love that you are handy enough to do it all by yourself. Bravo!!!

I know what you mean. My wonderful husband died last year. He just didn't like to do home improvements, it stressed him. I'm so glad to have all the tools I needed, I may not know the right name for the tool but I know how to use them. I've watched TV enough to know how. The internet has lots of information too. We are lucky to live in this day and age.

You did a great job. Everything looks so bright and new!! Looks like you can paint, install a toiletpaper holder and then decorate with a nice quilted wall hanging.

Murphy 07-11-2011 11:22 AM

You did a wonderful job. Girls rule (smile)!!

Missysgottohelp 07-11-2011 11:28 AM

Way to go. Nice job!!!

Ramona Byrd 07-11-2011 11:30 AM

You did a marvelous job. It's a lot better to do it ourselves than to sit back and whimper "Poor little me, nobody will do it for me" when we can do it ourselves.

I do admit that I'm now doing a whole lot more than I figured on doing when I got married over 50 years ago, but since I'm in good health and have my late DH's tools and know how to use them........

Yes, we are woman and watch us work when there's no man around to do it for us.

Last year I put in a new commode in the master bath, one day before company came!!

And last week I had some water coming from under the kitchen sink, took hold of the pipe and the whole $%%^^ thing broke. Original to the 1940s house, it had rusted out. I don't want to get a new sink right away, so for under 10 dollars I put in plastic piping..works like a charm. No leaks at all. I got some advice from a nice older man shopping at Home Depot, he reminded me to use the plumber's tape, a thin plastic stuff that you put on the screw part of the pipes. Makes a water tight seal.

Next on my list is replacing the sink in the front bathroom (original to the house) and the commode, also old. I don't like
the looks of them, some stains are impossible to remove. Might want to paint the tub and enclosure, it works nicely but I hate the dark tile color. And I want small dark gray and cream tiles on the floor. I can find directions on the Internet for this.

MaryStoaks 07-11-2011 12:24 PM

Go for it Ramona!

dixiebelle162002 07-11-2011 12:46 PM

Way to go, I have that exact cabinet over my toilet. My husband told me one time all I needed him for was the heavy stuff haha

blueangel 07-11-2011 02:03 PM

Good job

barbo117 07-11-2011 03:30 PM

Wow it looks great! Congratulations to you for a job well done. You are so right, women can do anthing they put their mind to. I learned years ago if I say anything to hubby about needing or wanting somemthing done to fix or repair the house I get 25 reasons why it doesn't need to be done. Soooo, now I just go and buy it and do it myself. What really makes me mad is when someone says "that looks great" and he says, yes, we did a good job didn't we?" Men!!!!

wolfkitty 07-11-2011 03:34 PM

I had a landlord that I rented a house from who loved me as a tenant, because I would just go ahead and fix what needed to be fixed or done. Keep in mind who worked in all the factories during WWII while the men were tied up in the fighting.

nativetexan 07-11-2011 04:06 PM

can you come over to my house??
my hubby's old car outside has two flats and i can't get the air tank in the garage to fill with air so i can fill the tires to get the emission's test. he's 20 yrs older than me, so no help there.

I have a 55 Chevy Bel Air in my garage. It hasn't been moved in at least 5 years and has 4 flats. I do have a small air compressor for tires. Guess I'd better get busy! I don't even know if the tires will hold air as the tires are 30 years old.

I think nowadays most if not all tires don't have inner tubes..(remember those?) but are more or less self sealing. I just had a nail removed from one of my tires that was low, and made the mistake of asking how much the inner tube was. The young mechanic just looked at me, confused with his mouth half open. It took an older customer to explain it to him..and me.
