Here is my new baby. We named her Chloe. I secretly hope she will stay off of my quilts, but I doubt that will happen! She is a shelter kitty and such a cutie! She is just a lover, but she doesn't like to be picked up. She rubs all over you and will get into your lap for loves, but at this point, picking her up for snuggles is a no go. Hopefully we can get her to like it more, but if not, well, that's ok.

Circus kitty!

This could be a problem! She loves chewing the tongues of tennis shoes!

Oh, those eyes are just looking for things to get into! Lily and Moira (canine) thank you for adopting from the shelter, even if it is a cat. Actually they like cats. Lily had her own for a long time. Sugarbaby wasn't cuddly at first. She had lived on her own for six months and didn't know humans are cuddlers. She got over it.

Chloe is a good looking little kitty cat. Enjoy her company.

With patience and love, she will come to be a lover. You have to allow for her previous life's 'baggage' to show up in her new life. But you can erase that part of her life.

One way you can help this along is to find a treat that she loves. When you are sitting and loving on her in your lap. Start by giving her a treat and put your hand under her chest. Once she accepts that without reaction, then start with putting your hand under her belly. And just go real slow and you will be able to get your hand all the way under her. Once she is used to that, you can start by moving her 'up' your body - i.e. from your lap, to on your stomach, to on your chest, etc. She will figure out that being in your arms is safe and nothing for her to be afraid of. All the time you are working with her, talk to her in a soft voice and tell her what a good girl she is and how much you love her. Eventually you will be able to carry her around and love on her whenever you want.

I have had to rehabilitated feral cats and kittens over the years. If she was a very little kitten (3-4 weeks) you start by putting them in a tall cardboard box that they can't climb out of. Everytime you pass by, you stop and pick up a kitten and cuddle it to your chest, while you talk to it and pet it. Some kittens take a couple of weeks and some take a couple of days. But it does work. But it is work but SOOOOO worth it.

About the chewing on the tennis shoes - go out to the pet shop and purchase her a pig ear or some pig ear strips. Yes, I know that they are meant for a dog, but kittens love them too. And they are really good to use to curb their chewing. She is the right age that she is losing her baby teeth and getting her permanent teeth in.

BTW - she is beautiful. And that look in her face - you could really have your hands full once she is settled in.

From a rescuer - thank you for adopting an teenage kitten. They get overlooked a lot.

What a sweet little face!

twixbar 07-04-2011 02:09 PM

She is beautiful.

sewnsewer2 07-04-2011 02:46 PM

What a cutie pie! Give her time, she may come around and like to be held.

My Tigger loves to be held and snuggles with me while his sister & brother only like being held on THIER terms.

SparkMonkey 07-04-2011 02:55 PM

I love tuxedo cats! She's a cutie. :)

My shelter kitty also hated being picked up when I got her--I adopted her as a "young adult" cat, and she would scream bloody murder and struggle wildly anytime you picked her up. (She's also missing a leg so God knows what happened to her before she wound up at the shelter.) She's a snuggler when you're sitting down and she requires a lap, but 7 years later she still doesn't like to be picked up. She'll tolerate it most of the time for short periods, but she'd rather you didn't. I don't push the issue. It's not a big deal, I can safely pick her up if I HAVE to, and I'd rather she feel comfortable around me and not worry that something bad is going to happen.

Awww...she's cute. We have one that only likes to be loved when she wants too..lol

I love tuxedos, how cute. Congrats on the new addition.

joyce blint 07-04-2011 04:18 PM

What a cutie and such a darling age!! Trainable but still kitten-like. Glad you have her. Enjoy.

SherriB 07-04-2011 04:37 PM

She is just a cutie!!! I want a black and white kitty someday. We just have 2 kitties now and they were both strays. They are just the most loving babies.

Cal Gal 07-04-2011 04:38 PM

She is so cute. Our male Tuxedo was a dumpster cat. So glad we rescued him.

UglyCook 07-04-2011 04:40 PM

I don't even especially like cats but she is a beauty! She looks like a lot of fun.

gmaybee 07-04-2011 04:40 PM

She is a cutie. I have a 11 year old Chloe who loves shoes of all kinds. I think the more smelly they are the more she likes them. We have to laugh when she sticks her head down in them, rubs all over them and then lays on them.

canmitch1971 07-04-2011 04:55 PM

She is very cute!!!

wolfkitty 07-04-2011 04:56 PM

She has the most inquisitive face! So beautiful! Mine took a long, long time to get used to being picked up. But I think it was how I was dealing with it. I would pick him up, and he would appear to be frightened of the whole idea. I would tell him 'it's okay' and that he is safe (he seems to know the word safe), and that's when he finally came around a little bit. Like you, I just don't want him to be afraid that I will hurt him, and he is beginning to realize that.

auntpiggylpn 07-04-2011 07:14 PM

She is ADORABLE and I personally want to thank you for adopting from your local shelter!!!

Kas 07-04-2011 11:20 PM

Tonight she let me hold her to my chest while she was doing the pussycat shuffle (making bisquits!). The kneaded me and chewed on my finger. Ouch! But she does that when she kneads. Definately taken away from her mommy too soon. We love her! When she walks and is happy, she kneads the floor with each step. Doesn't she have big ears? What does that mean?

alikat110 07-04-2011 11:25 PM

Only take in rescue pets here. Chloe is previous. In time, you'll find you have a friend for life...

QuiltMom2 07-05-2011 04:09 AM

Chloe looks like she could easily become a super-duper quilt inspector ( and thread chaser, thimble snatcher, quilt block disrupter too!)

teacherbailey 07-05-2011 04:26 AM

All nine of my rescues (5 dogs and 4 cats) say HI to Chloe and tell her that humans are the BEST!!!! Petting and being picked up are the best things EVER!

Love, Piper, Carly, Winston, Belle, Marco (the dogs) and Pippa, Ben, Tango and Doc (the cats)

jeannie t 07-05-2011 05:04 AM

Time and lots of love and I bet she becomes a real little snugler she's a real cutie!

sandpat 07-05-2011 05:23 AM

Oh, she is adorable! Thanks for going to the shelter too....hope you two enjoy making many quilts together! Hate to tell ya', but wishing that she will stay off of them is hopeless! LOL!

GlitzyMe 07-05-2011 05:48 AM

Oh..how sweet! She'll be great company in the sewingroom.

katlady3 07-05-2011 06:43 AM

What a beautiful pal!!!

oldcottontop 07-05-2011 07:16 AM

Nosey Girl is a shelter cat also. I have had her for six years now. She doesn't like to be picked up or petted; she likes these things "on her terms". She will jump up on my lap and nudge my hands to scratch her head, around her ears and down her back. But NO Petting. If I just run my hand down her back she turns around and looks at me with her "donky ears" (straight up) as if she is saying "what do you think you are doing? did I ask for that? But she is my Girl and I love her as she is.
