... we share a K-8 school with another small town. (high school is 15 miles away).
...no police dept, just a constable. ...the only stop light in the county is in the next town. anyone else? I know there are a lot of small town folks here. |
Yep me too,Sounds like you are describing my town, closest store except the gas station is 25 min away. I wouldn't have it any other way!
|
The town I'm in now is like your town 15 miles away. I grew up in a town like you live in.
Where I grew up....... No schools. Everyone from K up rode the bus 15 miles. 1 police officer -- His rule about underage driving was as long as you don't do anything stupid, he won't notice. Closest gas station or grocery store was 15 miles away One soda machine in town at the grain elevator. |
We don't have a stoplight either.....yet.
We do have a school altogether though and a small grocery store and a couple of gas stations. I am 20 miles from the nearest Walmart but I love it here. |
That all sounds so very nice!
|
I can remember my brother leaving the house to watch them close up the gas station. Why? because it was the most exciting thing to him in our small down.
|
We have a church and a post office (PO will close this year) Nearest mall is 60 miles. Dr. is 60 miles. Closest gas is 14 miles. School is 15 miles. Groceries is 25 miles. WalMart is 40 miles. Never hear a plane, train, emergency vehicles. Only "noise" is the river barges. Life is good in my little corner of the world.:)
|
We don't have a stop light but we do have 1 caution light.
k-12 are all in one school. Closest city is 16 miles away. I do not like it. I was a city girl until I got married. I miss the city. It was not a big city but I still loved it. |
Sounds like a great place to be :!:
|
wow! we have a gas station or a fast food joint or a bar and a shopping center on every other corner. Your corner of the world would be a tad too far from the city for me; but I would love to be able to have less congestion than I do have. And this is a smalllll city. lol
|
I've lived here 19 yrs now and up until a couple yrs ago, we were paying taxes on a hospital that didn't exist!
|
Town is triangle shaped. At it's widest edges - 7 blocks long, 5 (short) blocks wide.
1 retail business, a "Casey's" general store. We call it the "Civic Center". Town is surrounded by corn fields. Closest other towns are 3 miles away. Two of them have grocery stores. 1 of them has a quilt shop. Lucky me :) |
Our town is the biggest town in the county, the county seat, about 2800, but that's including the outlaying population. The entire county population is about 10,000. We're 7 miles out of town on 80 acres.
|
No police they do send deputies to patrol from time to time. We do have one officer who lives on the edge of town.
One gas/groc station 2 bars library and post office. That is the extent of our downtown. Salem was founded in 1835 by Quakers. We have the Llewellyn house which was one of the founders and also an underground railroad house now a museum. If you go one block to the south of us you are on the edge of town. If you go 4 blocks to the north you are on the edge of town. You can go 2 blocks east or 4 blocks west of us to reach the edge. Everyone has lp gas tanks no city gas. We have 2 churches and one grade school. The only big town close is Mt. Pleasant 12 miles north of us. Most people shop in Mt.P or Burlington 30 miles away. Jobs are at least in Mt.P or Burlington. Until a few years ago noone locked their doors. Noone thinks twice about leaving your car running or leaving the key in your car overnight. We have had some crime but it is few and far between. Usually things like someone got drunk and rode around shooting into some houses. That only happened once. Teenager shot out some windows. Our population is approx 400 |
Church, postoffice, gas pump at farm impliment repair shop, thats it. Growing up we had a party line on the telephone and knew everyone listened so my friends and I would make up outrageous stories and pretty soon the "facts" were all over town. Great fun while it lasted.
|
Well, I live in the largest town in the county. We have the stop light, schools, police, fire dept etc. High school takes in 15 towns and graduates about 50 kids a year. So although my town is the hub, it is very small and rural.

My town is so small that the Welcome to Ten Mile and Come Back Soon is on the same sign post!
|
I could do the small town life in a heatbeat. I live in a small town...not quite as small as those mentioned...but I know I would love it!
I enjoy solitude |
I'm in a larger town now, but lived for six years (prior to moving here) in a small town. pop 900. it was the county seat. (County population, 13,000.) We didn't actually Live in the town - just nine miles out. It had a cute town square, a nice little market, a restaurant, and two gas stations. Unexpectedly, the people weren't very friendly... kind of 'closed,' to us San Franciscan natives. But still, it was a fun thing to do. The county fair was cute and featured stage entertainment = the focus: buck dancing. It was hard to sit still with all that live music! :-D

Where I grew up:
In PA. No schools, no churches, no fast food places, the post office was the front room of a lady's house, no grocery stores except one small convenience store/gas station, no stop lights. My Dad knew everyone and if they were late for work or had a new vehicle by the time of day each car drove past our house! He was the fire chief, and ambulance driver. In elementary school there were only about 5 of us that were not related to the other kids or the teachers. |
I would love to live in your town. I love small towns.

Sounds like a place I would enjoy living. Living in Fairburn Ga was nice everything I needed was within a few minutes but I had an urban farm across the street. Lots were almost an acre, no McMansions, houses built in the 50's at least in our street. Older houses scattered through out town.
VA. Beach is just not my style, Houses on top of houses. Makes me feel really crowded. Except its a ghost town on this street. Been here almost 3 months and hardly seen a person . |
Small and smaller. No traffic light, just a 35mph sign for about a mile, one teensy post office, don't imagine it will be here much longer either, one Fire Dept., several churches along the road and that is it.

OOPS, jittery finger, I guess. |
I live in the county seat so we have a courthouse, 1 caution light, we do have a high school and a couple of hamburger joints. The population is about 2000.
|
I live outside of town, going in one stop sign with a three way stop. One market, bowling alley.1 quilt/yarn store.School K-12 post office, two banks.Look out summer the visitors are all over the place.Connie in CO

I wish we lived in a town like that! I grew up in a very small town, and untill 5 yrs ago managed to live in fairly small towns. We had to move due to my husbands job and now live a few miles west of Portland Oregon. I have turned into a hermit! I no longer know my neighbors, driving here is insane sometimes it takes you 40 mins to just run across town! There are to many people and to many shops, and after 5 yrs I still get lost all the time, for goodness sakes the roads names change 4 or 5 times while you are driving down them! You don't know the owner of the grocery or the pharmacy, or even the people you sit sit near at church.I miss my small town life so very much, count your blessings! All I can do is pray I can convince my hubby to move when we retire!
|
our town was like that when I was little three policemen volunteer firemen one school it was nicer then now its a straight line of traffic all day and a stop light every 50 feet
|
I grew up somewhere similar - very lonely for a child.
Here the schools are overcrowded, nearest grocery .25 miles, Walmart 1.5 miles, lights...every corner it seems. I could use a balance, but all my kids live here. I do have 4 QS within a 8 mile radius tho! |
OMGosh! Dont say that too loud, I see youre in VT - if you let people know youre an unspoiled little pristine country town in VT you'll be an artsyschfartsy city colony! (I say that w/ a smile, yuall! My inlaws owned a farm north of Burlington, and I was married in Essex Juct, and my 1st hubs is buried there! You wouldnt believe the chgs up there now. Every little wonderful country town has all but been runover w/ "progress" share t
|
Here The school has split and half stays here and the half goes to the next town. We have a very small town...no lights, no cops(they have to come from 45 minutes away). We do have a grocery store, but it is very small and over priced so I save for big grocery trips. It's nice living in a small town. I grew up in a big city and this is SO different from where I grew up, but it is safer. We don't have the gangs and not so many robberies(if there is everyone knows who did it...lol). It's not for everyone, but I like it.
|
Sounds just like the village where my daughter lives in Maine.
|
yep! we have a police station, very small, no gas stations but we do have a hop and sack.we share our schools with a small town,Gotebo, that is 7 miles away. we do have a farmers co-op, a post office and a car repair shop. have a drug store and 2 beer joints. We do have 5 churches here in a town of approximately 800 people
|
We don't have a constable, but we do have one flashing red light at the main four corners, and I wouldn't trade it for all the big town stuff.
|
WISH I LIVED IN A SMALL TOWN. HATE THE BIG CITY.
|
I live in a small town. No stop light for for whole county. The school is of three schools combined together. Everybody knows everybody and their business as well. People help each other out as well.
