I have seen those spiders before, but never seen a web that looked like that. Do you know what kind of spider it is?
Is that a real one? Looks huge!

Spider is real, but wonder about that zigzag..
Here's more about their web decoration:

I had one like that two years ago. Did the same web. I was hoping for him/her to return or for babies to show up, but no luck.
I would have to say it may be a sewing spider. Nice zig zag stitch. I've never seen on and I hope I never do.
creeps! i had one huge spider land on my monitor!! then the keyboard. i hit it with my shoe. Got it!!! scary. i hate spiders. especially large ones. webs are beautiful but them, not.
that is one nasty looking spider
I think they are beautiful! I've had them in my yard before. I'm sure they are harmless!
We always called them garden spiders and found them in our tomatoes!! I hated them as a child, but find them fasinating now as long as they are outside.
I read the title and thought it would be a picture of a new kind of spider web quilt! lol!
EWWWW, spiders give me the creeps!
I thought spiders have 8 legs. This looks like a big joke to me. If if is no joke, I hope I never meet one of thses guys.
I've seen webs like this before. The zigzag was very intriguing to me. That spider does have 8 legs.
We used to get those at our last house. Big and beautiful! And their webs had the zig zag too. Didn't know they are called a corn spider. But no, no interest in running into that web!! UGH!!
These are common garden spiders, not harmful at all to humans and are, indeed, beneficial because they eat flies, gnats, mosquitos, etc. Their babies over-winter in sacks in the webs (after the female - shown here - dies) and then break out in the spring. That's why it's uncommon to see them do it...old web and that sort of thing. They love gardens and sunny spots. Call them Charlotte and love 'em!!

These are no joke. I live on a farm and we have them all over. They make the webs just as shown. We called them corn spiders I do not know what the correct name is. I have seen these spiders get as big a round as your palm.

Thanks for sharing this, and to all of the others who suggested sites about this most interesting spider.
Ask him if he wants to quilt with you!

Runnnnnn,what a monster...gives me shivers!!!
Not a fan of spiders in any shape, size etc. I am pretty much terrified of them, and run the totally other way. I have been known to capture(would rather capture than wonder if its going to crawl on me) bugs by putting bowls over them, so hubby could take them and do what ever he does with them. But I will give this one credit, its interesting to look at, from afar and that web is amazing.
That is one scary looking spider The web is kind of neat but I HATE SPIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And did the "shoe" lock up your keyboard when you whacked the spider????I don't like spiders, but I also don't kill them--it's bad luck to kill a spider. I do like one of the other ladies said, capture them somehow and wait for hubby to come home and throw get rid of it outdoors.....

I used to teach spiders in October in my classroom...and the students loved the unit. I had this spider in my yard one year and watched it grow from a baby to full grown. The zigzag on the web became smaller and thinner, the older the spider got. One day I blew a bug into its web, and was amazed at how fast it pounced on it and wrapped it up in silk...about two seconds! Finally it made a huge egg sac that was the size of a ping pong ball. It was a brown color and looked like an upside down balloon. It was on the siding of our house and was there for awhile. Then one day i noticed that it had deflated...all the babies were gone.
These are amazing spiders! I do know that there were fewer bugs in my garden where this spider lived. Thanks for all the info ......

Thank you for sharing. I don't mind spiders as long as they stay outside. For some reason they like my shower. I scoop them up and put them outside, although I have one busy mama spider who is allowed to live in the corner of my kitchen window. She has been really busy this summer because the cat tore a hole in the screen. I don't mind spiders because they eat all the bugs! Moths, fruit flies, house flies, crane flies - you name it, that spider takes care of it.
She is a beauty! I love and hate spiders all at the same time. Here is some info. I would never kill a spider and always remove them from my presence. The only thing worse than a spider is a flying spider.

They are often called garden spiders and we have seen them and the webs in our garden. Creepy!
i'm happy to read that it's no threat to us human beans. whew!
how lucky you are to have such a beauty to watch! :) |
To heck with t!he decorative web...Run as fast as you can cause that baby looks big enough to snack on you
I think spiders are fascinating! The web is the strongest "string" for its size, and scientists have not been able to duplicate it. They are voracious eaters of other bugs, so I leave the webs for as long as I can stand them.
When we brought my newborn DD home from the hospital, there was a garden spider in the kitchen window. With a little imagination (maybe it was leftovers of anesthesia!) you could read NU LUV in the web. At 39, she still is a wonderful, lovely woman. Maybe I read Charlotte's Web too many times. |
