Are these the one's called Resurrection Lily? In the spring you have large Daffodil like leaves, then then die - then when you think the stupid plant died up comes a stalk which grows several inches a day then out pops the Lily's?

yup. Here's mine :)

Connie in CO 08-14-2011 11:05 AM

Now i know what they look like, thanks for the picture.I'll wait awhile longer.

blueangel 08-14-2011 11:14 AM

Mine haven't bloomed yet

eastermarie 08-14-2011 11:20 AM

Beautiful color.

clem55 08-14-2011 11:21 AM

Aren't they beautiful? In the spring I get so many leaves coming up, can't wait to see the blooms. Only thing is, I have to go around the fence to the neighbors side to see my "ladies". I get the greenery, she gets the flowers.

gmaof5 08-14-2011 11:27 AM

We grew up calling them "Suprise Lillies". Ours have been blooming for over 2 weeks now.

erstan947 08-14-2011 12:12 PM

I had only 1 come up this year. I've always had several. I think my DH has been "working" in the yard again.

luvTooQuilt 08-14-2011 12:15 PM

mom calls them 'Naked ladies'.. or did I just hear her wrong all this time?!?!?!

Connie in CO 08-14-2011 12:52 PM

I just came in from outdoors.I watered the 2 blubs and kinda dug around.I see 1 looks like it might be ready to send up a bud stem i hope.I've always heard them called Naked Ladies but that depends on the area of the country,i think.

janjj 08-15-2011 05:27 AM

I've always called mine 'surprise lillies'

suzee 08-15-2011 05:34 AM

We've lived in this house for less than a year so we were delighted to find hardy amaryllis planted here. My 13 year old granddaughter was visiting when my hubby came in and asked me "Did you see all the naked ladies out front?" She about went into shock! WHAATTT???!!! LOL

mountain deb 08-15-2011 05:43 AM

My FIL use to grow them all the time, I think the name fasinated him more than the flower.

Mona Marie 08-15-2011 05:58 AM

I planted some and they didn't come up

MS quilter 08-15-2011 06:10 AM

We call them "spider lilies". they do resemble a spider. Maybe we are talking about 2 different things.

shirley35 08-15-2011 09:29 AM

We called them Surprise Lily were I lived in MO. IA is always a week or two behind MO in growing. Mine have been blooming for several days. I've never cut mine, didn't realize they smelled so good. I'll have to cut some.

deb8746 08-15-2011 10:00 AM

deb8746 08-15-2011 10:01 AM

I think if you were to buy these from a bulb catalog, you will find they are "Hardy Amaryllis". They have been in bloom here in VA for about 1 week. Beautiful lilies and make wonderful cut flowers for bouquets.

joyce888 08-15-2011 12:10 PM

You need to post a pic - I've never heard of them.

serenitybygrace 08-15-2011 12:14 PM

My neighbor was telling me about a little boy who lived in the house I live in now. There are Surprise Lillys on the west side of the house. They called them "Naked Ladies" The little boy, about 5 years old, went to school and drew a picture. The teacher asked him about his picture and he told her they were "Naked Ladies" He got in trouble and was sent home. Duh..teacher, ask for more details.
Anyway, I would never call them "Naked Ladies" around a child.

purplefiend 08-15-2011 01:23 PM

My grandpa grew Naked Lady flowers

wanda lou 08-15-2011 01:25 PM

mine are in full bloom.

DogHouseMom 08-15-2011 01:32 PM

OK ... it's not a true Lily, latin name is lycoris squamigera which is in the Amaryillis family.

indymta 08-15-2011 02:17 PM

I have just a few plants which are just stating to come up - no blooms yet. Glad someone else refers to them as naked ladies...always get a strange look when I ask about them.

I think you need to let the foliage die back naturally to get blooms. Mine were planted in terrible clay soil and bloomed like crazy.

jillnjo 08-15-2011 03:43 PM

Surprise lilies multiply like crazy around our area-pretty bulbs and fragrant.

Pieces2 08-15-2011 04:00 PM

Mine are blooming here in Missouri, the fragrance is wonderful.
My mother-in-aw always called them surprise lillies.
