Need letter patterns for fabric applique

Please share a source for free font styles for applique. I want to make a sign of letters on pennants to hang for a cantina party. Letters will be about 6" tall and done as raw edge applique.

Thanks in advance if you can help.

I use my Word program. Find the font I want, increase it in size, and print them off. Then I write/trace over the back side so it can be read when you trace it onto your fusible and it will face the correct direction. Otherwise, you could "google" alphabets and see if you can find what you are looking for.
Good luck,
Susan

I use a child's drawing book which has the alphabet in. Different sizes and fonts.sorry I've had the book years so can't give a title as I've lost cover.

Also, if you have a school supply store they usually have large alphabet letters for teachers to put on bulletin boards. I used some for a Christmas quilt.

Thank you for your suggestions. I've seen applique letters on children's quilts, so i knew there probably had to be an alphabet source.

I made a backdrop quilt for my angel ornament booth with"Angel Blessings" appliqued. My DH found a font assortment and enlarged a script I chose. But we don't remember where, and Word doesn't have quite the style I'm looking for now.

I do have a picture of that backdrop quilt and will try to pull it up and post here soon - after I get the quilted pennants and a tropical theme wall quilt in the mail for my friend's cantina.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

Another source ... $ $tore ... you often find cut out letters that you could then trace around.

Size changes ... remember many of our printers can upsize or downsize to what we want.

I found the mother lode of fonts here, thanks to Crafterwannabe at Voy Craft/Sayings board.

I clicked on Groovy and may use Chocolate Bar.

There are lots of possibilities for all kinds of quilt applique projects.

Hi Carolyn-
Pat Sloan has a nice free alphabet. You will need to enlarge it, tho. I am always searching for good letters-would really like to lay my hands on Moda's pieced alphabet that I let pass me by. Oh well.

Definitely the best cost alternative.

Those cut out letters and numbers are often found in hardware stores. I've seen them used to lay down and overspray with paint, then remove the cardstock letters.

Hi Purl,
The Moda pieced alphabet is still available. You can get it here for free. I just printed it out but you have to download each letter individually. Scroll to bottom for link and change the $ sign to the letter you want and you will have to change the sign each time to the next letter you want.

Now that I've found a source for so many letter styles, I'm thinking about fabric printing for quilt labels. I have been using my embroidery machine to stitch quilt labels, but the builtin fonts are limited to a few styles. I ran across a good tutorial for printing labels with an ink jet printer. If you are interested, I think the link may have to be posted at another forum.

I decided to look for a way to get going with my applique letters. Took a look through a big box of templates and found a set of stencils for plain letters 6" tall. Isn't it funny how we all get together with our sewing groups and have give aways of this and that and clear out some of our stuff and rescue someone else's and then lose track of it! I have no memory of how I got those stencils. Might even have been something DH found at a yard sale or flea market. Anyway, my project just became simple and doable.

I decided to make the letters slightly thicker and round the sharp corners. Laid out the adjusted stencils on the tropical fabric left over from the wall quilt. Was able to get the all the letters from the flower and foliage portions. All cut out and ready to fuse to the background fabric and machine applique with a zigzag or decorative stitch. I also found 4 coordinating cocktail napkins, edge stitched and just waiting to be fringed. So glad they showed up. Maybe I'll use up the letter cutaways and make crazy patch coasters for the lemonade or icetea glasses. All will be finished soon and packed to send. And I was talking to DH about the script applique he helped with. And i think we may try to go back to how we did that. But for now, I'm soon going to be done with this current project. Thank you to everyone who shared.

TYVM for all the suggestions and links. I am making a note of all as well as others as i discover them.

My wall quilt and banners, coasters, and napkins are done. I am making scrappy coasters from the final print leftovers and solids from my stash and deciding whether to include them in the gift package.

I discovered pansies and other flowers made from wire edge ribbon when that craft was popular. I may finish a couple and include them for a brooch or hair clip or a wrist or neck band. They need centers ... a bead or button.
