No Black Friday Shopping, anyone else refrain?

I watched a YouTube video that said the average person spends a bit over $1000 Black Friday through Cyber Monday. I could not believe it.

Me, I do not need anything and have had no interest in going to a Mall or online shopping.

Have you been shopping this weekend? If yes, what did you purchase?

tallchick 11-30-2019 02:44 PM

No shopping here yet, but I do have some fabric in my cart that I will purchase today but certainly no where near 1000.00 and certainly no where near 100.00 either. I hibernate during this time of year, it’s crazy out there!

JenniePenny 11-30-2019 03:08 PM

I did some online shopping and got winter undergarments (now called base layers) and then at another site bought 3 spools of thread. That is all. No malls or crazy online shopping sprees.

JustAbitCrazy 11-30-2019 03:09 PM

I never shop on Black Friday. In fact, I hardly shop at all. I handcraft some gifts and the rest get money.

IrishNY 11-30-2019 03:17 PM

I didn't this year but often shop this weekend, all online. The only stores I'm interested in actually going to are bookstores and fabric stores. For everything else, it's online.

Tartan 11-30-2019 03:21 PM

No, but I did a little fabric shopping last weekend.

tohkatz68 11-30-2019 03:33 PM

Only online with Amazon for art supplies for granddaughter and Legos for grandson.

osewme 11-30-2019 03:52 PM

I've never shopped on Black Friday & it's probably been at least 15 years since I've set foot in a mall. Wow! $1,000 spending. No wonder so many people are up to their eyeballs in credit card debt. That's not for me.

Rhonda K 11-30-2019 03:55 PM

I shopped last week before BF. I got the free baby deal with my Accuquilt purchase. Best part is no crying or diapers.
Not a mall shopper so no crowds for me.

Mumto2 11-30-2019 03:59 PM

We did go out Black Friday shopping as my YA children find the lines and crowds fascinating.......they grew up in a different country btw. All combined no where near 1000. The kids bought maybe $30 in dvd’s and Ugly sweaters for a Christmas party.....14.99 each with Kohl’s cash etc attached. I bought some small appliances like another crockpot an electric knife that are free after rebates, and bras.......in all after rebates, Kohl’s cash, some coupons, we spent $30 there. Dh has picked up some power cords etc he has wanted.....at the most $100. I did the big purchase last week when I picked up an extra sewing machine......a basic Viking for $399. All my attachments fit so my daughter can sew as much as she wants over Christmas holidays, and so can I.

SusieQOH 11-30-2019 04:02 PM

My husband and I were out today and noticed that the stores and roads weren't busy at all. I live in a busy area. I have a feeling people are doing a lot more online shopping. I do more and more each year.

Jingle 11-30-2019 04:24 PM

No shopping for anything. We may go get food and animal stuff tomorrow. No gifts, will give youngest Grandson (17) money and youngest Great Granddaughter money to be added to her new savings account. She got so many baby things to last for years, including toys.

Tothill 11-30-2019 04:37 PM

Thank you for the replies.

I do like to go to a Mall at least once during the Christmas season. I like the decorations, watching kids get their photos with Santa and the music. There isn't a Mall in my town, so it is an outing to go.

Mumto2, I understand the attraction of getting an extra machine that takes the same feet, bobbins etc as your main machine. I have three machines ranging from 30+ years old to bought 3 years ago all of which use the same feet and bobbins. My latest machine is a smaller one that I take to classes and loan to my good friend who cannot afford a new machine right now.

My first grand baby arrives in March. I will be setting up an Education Savings Plan for him upon arrival. Neither of the parents are academically inclined, so I will take on saving for his future education. In Canada there is a grant that matches up to 20% of what I contribute to a maximum of $500 per year. It is worth my while to try to find $170 per month to contribute.

NZquilter 11-30-2019 04:39 PM

I bought one thing that was already on clearance for 50% off, and then another 25% off for Black Friday. It's always so hard for me to say "no" on Black Friday, with all the quilting sales emails. Every year I have refrained, so this year was a treat. I could easily spend $1000 on quilting stuff with online sales. :D

Onebyone 11-30-2019 04:47 PM

I bought a few daily specials from Missouri Star and Quilt in a Day sales and a lot of thread from Superior on their sale. I bought a pair everyday shoes, a nice casual knit coat, and a pair of sweat pants all not on sale for me. I'm done with my winter wardrobe until next year. LOL

donac 11-30-2019 05:13 PM

Did have to go out to get my mother a birthday present. Other than that no.

cjsews 11-30-2019 05:38 PM

I hit Walmart, jcpenny and old navy. Probably spent about $150 for 8 grandkids. The crowds didn’t seem too crazy until I headed back to Walmart at 6:30pm. What a zoo. Made a quick trip there and headed home. Xmas shopping is done

pocoellie 11-30-2019 05:41 PM

I probably haven't spent $1000 in 10 years time for gifts. People like that are the ones who probably have maxed out credit cards and are still paying off previous years gifts by the time Christmas rolls around again.

I don't go to malls, nearest ones would be 150 miles one way, but I did buy some nice yardages of flannel at a local thrift store yesterday, not that I needed more fabric. LOL

quiltingshorttimer 11-30-2019 05:56 PM

no shopping for me on BF---I've actually never gone on that day in my life. last week I did take advantage of a pre BF sale with Jackie Kunkels online store and got a Judie Niemeyer pattern for 40% off and some batiks Have more than half my Christmas shopping done as I start usually right after Labor Day to spread the expense some. Still have some folks to shop for, but not feeling too stressed about it.

SueZQ from MN 11-30-2019 05:59 PM

I worked in retail for over 20 years and there isn't any bargain good enough to get me to go out on black Friday, the day after Christmas, or any of the Sats. after Thanksgiving!! Not even the $2.50/yd. truckload "specials" they brought in at the lqs will lure me in. If you watch the ads, almost all of the great "bargains" from this weekend will be on sale again sometime before Christmas. I'm not a Grinch or a scrooge, I just won't fight those crazy crowds for "while quantities last" items.

Tish05 11-30-2019 06:20 PM

My local LQS had their first Black Friday sale yesterday. It was buy 2 meters, get 1 free. I have three quilt projects lined up for when I finish the quilt I'm currently working on. I have one fabric for 1 and I decided I want to make a disappearing 4 patch in two colours, so I needed a second fabric for that, plus some fireside fleece for the back. Also I picked up a couple of Christmas panels and I want to try a sort of attic window with one so needed some brown for the window frames. All totaled it came to $123.00 and I had 9 meters of fabric. :)

SusieQOH 11-30-2019 06:20 PM

Tothill, Me too. Each Christmas season my husband and I go to the mall, usually just once, for the fun of it. We buy some gifts and then have dinner at a nice restaurant. It's always fun and I do like seeing the decorations and people strolling around.

tranum 11-30-2019 06:45 PM

Years ago with small grandkids to buy for, DH would drive me to stores on Black Friday but now they get money so that’s over. Stores that get all the traffic are on other side of town so quiet where we live.

I did drive to a consignment store in our area as they had 50% off & found 6 cardigan sweaters for DD who says she’s cold at work & needed some. Just 2 other shoppers in there. We’ll go downtown some Saturday for lunch & walk around.

Someone put it this way: people go out & trample each other for “stuff” on the day after we express thanks for what we have. Go figure !

kristijoy 11-30-2019 07:40 PM

I bought a ticket to a homeschool conference (was planning on attending anyway) and a American History magazine subscription for my son. Nothing outrageous. And I did it all online!

I looked for other homeschool curriculum sales, but didn't find anything I needed to purchase just yet.

I worked in retail for many years too. Kind-of jaded my opinion about shopping! LOL!

I was in Beiseker for the Parade this year. My sister in law has Ancora Decor. Marnie sent me down to the quilt shop. I was in there twice that day and she had 25% off almost everything. I did not realize the sale at first and had to go back for more. You are lucky to have such a lovely quilt shop in your small town. I will go there again next year when I go back to visit family.

WMUTeach 12-01-2019 03:30 AM

No shopping for me except a birthday gift of season tickets for a local choir. No discount beyond the senior discount normally given. Black Friday was "quilt 'til your fingers hurt day".

lindaschipper 12-01-2019 04:55 AM

I purchased the new Missouri Star Hexie template for $2.50... being the big spender that I am.

luvstoquilt 12-01-2019 05:32 AM

My grandchildren are older now so I give them money. My great grandson is 3 and I am still not sure what to do for him. He has a lot of toys so he may get money too. I am not a serious shopper anymore. I miss NYC and all the beautiful stores. I went into Macy’s in Naperville and it was a mess. This time of year I really extra miss my husband. We always took a Friday off work and shopped all weekend, saw the tree in Rockefeller Center, ate at special restaurants, etc. lots of wonderful memories. I only give gifts to the grandchildren..we all agree we want nothing so we donate. Christmas is more like a glittery Thanksgiving now.

Doggramma 12-01-2019 06:50 AM

No shopping - I thought about it though. And I’ve been getting tons of emails about specials. Who knows what happens in the next 2 days!

Blueridgebeverly 12-01-2019 07:09 AM

I took advantage of online sales to buy things I’ve had my eye on. Like my favorite hand lotion from Camille Beckman. Also some fabric I’ve wanted (Harvest Road by Lella Boutique). Last year I bought 1/2 yard of Mon Ami by BasicGrey to make a tote. I found some other pieces on Etsy from the same collection....couldn’t resist grabbing them. Now I have to make the tote!

We drove pass the outlet mall just north of Columbus Ohio Friday night, and the parking lot was overflowing!

Anniedeb 12-01-2019 07:55 AM

I have not been out shopping on a black Friday since 2008! I retired mid 2009 from 25+ years in retail sales/management. My corporate store was located in a popular mall, and it was always a frenzy. The mall required us to be open at 4:00 AM meaning we needed to there at 3:00 AM. Employees were not allowed to park their vehicles in the mall lots. The worst comes out in people when they think they are saving an extra penny or two. The pushing/shoving/grabbing really took its toll over the years. I decided then that nothing was worth succumbing to that madness. I still love the season, and love shopping...just not that day.

We did venture out because DH had two Doctor appointments. Unfortunately, our clinic is about a mile past the mall, and the traffic was horrendous, with all exits backed up and traffic at a stand still. Fortunately the local police were keeping a through lane open. Coming back we meandered through city streets and avoided the freeways/highways.

Fizzle 12-01-2019 08:32 AM

Used to love to go out on BF with my daughter. It was exhilarating. But with stores opening on Thanksgiving, by the time i would go at 5 am the excitement was over. Retailers ruined it for me. Opening earlier and earlier. This year we went for a Pedicure. Was relaxing.

klswift 12-01-2019 08:36 AM

I would sooner gouge out my eyes with a hot poker than shop in a mall on Black Friday! I do not even like to go to the grocery store on that day. I worked retail for too many years and had to be on the other side of the counter for way too many of those sales! I sometimes have a couple items that I might check the internet for this weekend, but for the most part, And most of the other things, I don't need! Also, one of my daughters was born in December and because it is a very hectic month, I learned that you can buy your presents in Sept, Oct and Nov and then spend December just enjoying the season without the frenzy, the overspending and the stress!

Jordan 12-01-2019 08:41 AM

No shopping for me---my dh and myself were out shoveling snow all day so I couldn't go if I wanted to. Snowed in for about 4 days. Besides I really don't like crowds pushing and shoving each other no matter how much money you save.

Oh I haven't been in to Ancora Decor yet. I don't buy a lot of home decor but I'm going to have to drop in and have a wee shop! It looks like they have some interesting Christmas decorations and I haven't picked up anything special yet this year. I love the idea of supporting local when I can and it will be more special knowing someone I've "met" is related to the owner.

Mariposa 12-01-2019 08:58 AM

No BF shopping for me. We had 2 days of family getting together.
But on Friday morning, I did check out Bonnie Hunter's first clue for her new Mystery. www.quiltville.blogspot.com. The name of it is "Frolic". :)

Onebyone 12-01-2019 08:58 AM

My DDs and I would shop Black Friday when it was early on Friday morning not all night Thursday. We had a lot of fun going to the mall then. Not as frenzy as it is now. We ended the morning with hot chocolate in the food court, not mashed or hurried at all. I don't remember anyone buying a lot of TVs then. LOL Not a lot of men shopping Black Friday either. It was more a woman's experience.

Ellen 1 12-01-2019 09:41 AM

Could not pay me to go to the mall on Black Friday.....of course we all have our price....hahaha

charley26 12-01-2019 10:11 AM

I have never shopped on BF, or the more recent CM either.
