Non-quilted

Raised 3 sons and it wasn't until our first grandchild...a girl!...was born that I dusted off the sewing machine. Started making soft dolls for her which then lead me to start quilting. With Christmas around the corner here are some ideas that some of you might want to try for the children in your life. The patterns came from 2 books: Softies only a Mother Could Love and More Softies only a Mother Could Love...both edited by Jess Redman and Meg Leder. I followed the pattern for a couple and then did my own on the others. So much fun and would be a great way to use up larger scraps you might have lying around.

They are beautiful....believe it or not our weekend supplement had a softie similar to yours (handmade with handstitched features) listed on the kids gift page and is advertised for sale at a coastal Arts Centre not too far from where I live and the price is $88 (Australian).

I agree with Pookie...your stuffing is really good, it does make a big difference in the finish.

Thanks so much for sharing your gorgeous creations.

Those are just "Toooooooooo Dang cute" what a great idea. Funny how little ones seem to favor these type of dolls over the "store" type.

They are precious!

Yes, I noticed on etsy.com that one of the softies was very much like one I had made (maybe the giraffe?) and I think the original designer was from Australia. Thanks for all the compliments. They are just too much fun to make!

Thank you

Bubba was made using "Mamma Bear" from the first book, Softies only a Mother Could Love. I took the pattern and re-drew parts of it to make it larger than the pattern as it's supposed to represent Grampy (my DH) and Grammie represents me...which is smaller like mamma bear. I made 2 sets of bear couples...for each of our granddaughter's grandparents. The fabric for Bubba was taken from bits of my husbands favorite t-shirt and a pair of old worn blue jeans.

Once you find a pattern in the book that you like it's amazing how easy it is to adapt it and make your own original. Good luck!
