We have been working on updating our hall bathroom. Today was to be the day we installed the new toilet and sink.
The toilet did seem to want to seat right and my DH had to pull it back off the part in the floor. When he did, the pipe going down into the ground broke and came out with it! Now we have to get a plumber to come out and replace that pipe! It will be a major job and not cheap I am sure! When we looked at the pipe where it broke, you could see it had been cracked, probably for years! It has possibly been that way since the house was constructed 20 years ago. About 15 years ago we had to spend a small fortune because termites had come in behind that toilet. I now think the toilet has been seeping water for years and that's what attracted the termites. Oh happy day...I don't think that bathroom will ever get finished! :| |
Isn't construction frustrating. You get one thing fixed and the next is there to be done; but, in the end, it will be beautiful. Keep the faith; it will all work out.
Hope you have another bathroom in your house! I dread needing to get work done in our bathroom since we only have one. We need the flooring replaced, a new sink and cabinet and would really like an elevated (handicapped) toilet. Need to coordinate work with good weather so we can use our camper's bathroom.
Remodeling is so much fun...Hahaha! Each thing turns to something else that needs to be done. When we remodeled the bathrooom on the main floor of the house, the contractor had to tear out the ceiling in the bedroom in the basement to get to the pipes. We had 2 sections of the house torn uup instead of just one. It was worth it when it was done.
Around my house, we refer to it as home DEstruction because that is how it always ends up! And I definitely sympathize about the fortune spent on termites! Have been through that ourselves.
Hope it is an easier fix than you anticipate. By the way, since you are the queen of laughs, can we refer to this as toilet humor? (Sorry!) |
My Gosh, never fails eh? Hang in there.
So sorry to hear this :(
We replaced the floor under ours shortly after moving in some 30 years ago, my DH was having trouble getting the bolt out, so in his infinate wisdome, decided to "tap" it with a hammer. Guess what? New toilet. LOL
So sorry to hear about your plumbing problem.
I hate bathrooms!!!!!!!!!!
was waiting for the punch line... sorry this wasn't one of your famous jokes
I'm sorry to hear that happened to you. We remodeled our hallway bathroom this fall. Dh did all, new tile in shower and floor, cabinets and counter top. Looks really nice. AND then he had to take off the toilet again because it didn't set right the first time. He places a rag in the pipe while it is off and forgot to take it out. He discovered (or remembered)this after several days when the sewer backed up. Mr. Rooter came out and fixed it, although never found the rag. A couple weeks later main sewer line backed up and carpet in basement now needs to be replaced. Mr. Rooter comes again. (Right before Thanksgiving) After lots of looking and insurance consulting carpet is to be installed on Monday. Friday before, main sewer line is backed up again. Although didn't flood this time because now DH runs to the basement with a flashlight to check drain everytime someone flushes. Cancel carpet installation, call different plumber this time! Do you see the cost of our remodel going up?:) Anyway, long story, carpet is now in, just before Christmas and week-end company. Still haven't found anything in that line but hoping for the best. DH no longer needs to exercise because still running to check the drain in basement several times a day! DH said from the beginning he hates to do plumbing. I'm not saying a word......
Well, it turned out not to be as bad as we thought! Still a pain in the butt though! With any luck at all, we'll have it going before the night is over!
We do have another bathroom but you miss one if you're used to it being there!! |
The DIY is NEVER done when you own a home. It is always something and not always can you DIY it and then it gets costly.
Poor you! Glad it's turning out better than first thought. I will be going home to CA soon where the water pipes under the house have broken. This house is in commercial zoning and I was hoping to sell before I'd have to do much with it. The pipes were ok when I put it on the market, but of course nothing is moving! Usually they just demo houses for commercial buildings which is why I was not too interested in doing much with it. I need to be in NM with my family. oh well. Merry Christmas to all.

Hang in there, Ditter. Our main bathroom is finally done. It started out with just putting tile in the tub/shower area. We had a tub surround. Well, the surround was leaking and we had black mold on the wall boards. OK, replaced the boards and tiled...then wait for son to finish someone elses job and then he comes back to grout. We decided to tile the rest of the room, halfway up. Take off the old tile that I installed many years ago. I worked around the toilet, but son wasn't going to do that...takes off the toilet and breaks it ...I was going to McDonalds to pee for several days. It has been several months since we started it, and yesterday he came over and painted the area above the tub. We have been living with primer for 2 months.
Yes, I know that I could have done some of it myself...but, I PAID him to do the work. Don't hire a relative. :( |
Hang in there you will be 'sitting pretty' when bathroom is finished.

I so sorry to hear of your potty issues. I shudder everytime we have a plumbing problem. My DH usually does more damage than he does good. However, he did replace our water heater a few weeks ago with no mishaps.
Thankfully my DH knows that plumbing is not his thing lol
Yes, it is a pain. Never start these things late in the day! You need plenty of time to go to the hardware store six times before you are through!
Sorry to hear of all your woes, but am smilimg at the vision of your husband being on toilet flush watch, that is so funny, hope it all gets sorted soon, or he will be too exhausted to enjoy Christmas !! :)
How frustrating! I am glad it is starting to come together now!
I also hate plumbing problems....don't we all.Somene mentioned the high rise toilet. There's only about 3-4" diff & what a difference it is.DH went with that when we needed a new toilet.
The older you get, the more you appreciate it. Our DD liked it so well, they installed same one & they're a "few" yrs younger.:-) |
Why is it house projects always turn major! Sorry for you, not a great time of year for that frustration...hang in there, you will have a beautiful bathroom soon I bet!
Oh Ditter!! So sorry! And during Holiday season makes it worse. Not fair!
Hugs! I hate plumbing problems!

I always multiply the time by 2 and the cost by 3. I usually get close, but who would have guessed a kitchen renovation would never be completed in nearly 15 years.

I think someone needs to read one of her funny jokes today. lol
Sorry about your toilet. |
The same sort of thing happened to me this week too. My DH (with the help of a friend) decided to put down my cedar wood flooring in my living room and down the hall as my Christmas present. We have only had the wood for 3 years and he is just now getting around to putting it down the week before Christmas! Well, you should see my house! Disaster area would be an appropriate word right now. My dining room table top cannot even be seen and I have junk everywhere! Needless to say, we will not be having Christmas at my house this year. DD has volunteered to have it at her house. Bless you Jenn! lol

Good thing you found it when you did. It could have caused more problems with your newly remodeled bathroom.

Ah yes...The joys of remodeling! I feel for you but just remember that time passes...soon you will be laughing about today
Perhaps it was lucky as you located a longtime problem which can now be properly fixed to avoid future problems. I always think things happen for a reason.
Don't you just hate it when that happens?
With houses, there in no punch line! They just keep being one funny "little" problem after another! I have to hire things done, and it can get pretty pricey! |

I KNEW there was a reason we are putting off our bathroom remodel!!! Fortunately we do have another one close by to use while ours is being done. Since it's the master, we will have to move out of our bedroom during the remodel, which I really don't want to think about.
Glad yours is working out ok, Ditter. Now you will have to find us a good joke about it. |
Oh, my! That is discouraging. However, at least now you know there was a problem and you will get it fixed. Sounds like this repair will fix more than one problem. Do you mind if I relate to you my story? Here goes.
We were all packed (the car) to leave at 3:00 a.m. to go to Wisc. When we travel I have a difficult time sleeping so I happened to be awake. It was still winter so I was surprised to hear what I thought was rain. Rain? I listened and it sounded like it was coming from the kitchen. (I was in our den) I leaned forward to look in the kitchen and a wall of water (don't know how I missed that) was pouring out of my kitchen ceiling. Yep! The toilet tank on the second floor cracked and broke open and there was an inch of water in the bathroom. I turned off the valved; woke up my DH; then ran for buckets; we started mopping and cleaning and some time later we had most of the water under control. That short time cost us over $10,000.00. Thank heavens for home owner's insurance. It ruined the kit ceiling and floor; it ruined the basement ceiling and carpet; it was pouring out of the light fixtures. Fortunately, I was up (and we were still home) because we saved our hard-wood floors. Our house is 90 years old. Couldn't believe my DH said we better get to bed we have to leave in an hour. Oh, my! Hope that makes you feel that you are not alone in these house hazards. |
