So has this happened to anyone else? I'm sewing along happily and got my big ole' finger too close to the needle and bam right thru my fingernail and out the top of my finger! What to do- ER or stay home? I knew if i went to the ER' I'd sit for hours and they would just use a hemastat and pull it out. I had a project to finish so got my pliers and pulled that bad boy out. My husband said "So you had to stop sewing?" ( Obviously he's new here!) " No. I just changed the needle and kept going!" Just thought I'd share.

Painiacs 05-19-2011 09:12 PM

Ouch! Keep it clean and becareful!!

Celeste 05-19-2011 09:20 PM

I cannot imagine how much that must hurt!

My sister just asked if you'd had a recent tetnus shot?

Oh that is too rich!

I've clicked the end of mind so I know your's will be very tender for a few days.... tetanus shot maybe in line?

Kaz 05-19-2011 09:27 PM

OUCH!!! Sure that must have hurt! Hope you are OK...

hspirit_99 05-19-2011 09:27 PM

learned that lesson early, was about 5 on my GMs treadle and it went in twice. sat there while she backed it out of my finger then pulled the thread out and we both started to laugh. it hurt so bad but it was so funny to me. havent done it since.
feel better soon

craftybear 05-19-2011 09:27 PM

ouch ouch, keep a good look on it don't want you to get infection

Jim 05-19-2011 09:29 PM

OH makes me cringe...I caught the needle right at the nail bed...jerked it soon as it hit and rippppppp...was so tender for so long but hey I sewed extra carefully with a bandaid on.

dglvr 05-19-2011 09:31 PM

Ahhhh that hurts just thinking about it. A friend did that last year so I'm always watching not to get my finger that close.
Ha. I'm glad you kept sewing though.

irishrose 05-19-2011 09:31 PM

I did that in the middle of the night once. The needle was embedded in the bone of my finger - the Elna will sew through anything, LOL. I had to reach around to the thumbscrew and take the needle out of the machine to wake my husband up with pliers in one hand and the embedded needle in the other. My concern - how much blood did I get on the wildly expensive silk organza that was on the machine that night. White, of course.

Soak your hand in warm soapy water (antibacterial soap) twice a day for 15 minutes. Takes care of a variety of ills.

BETTY62 05-19-2011 09:43 PM

Ouch is a good word to say at a time like that but I said something a little different. Hope your finger heals quickly.

chuckbere15 05-19-2011 09:45 PM

You're a trooper!!!

Kas 05-20-2011 12:04 AM

Very hard core.

SueDor 05-20-2011 01:42 AM

Ouch!

My GM died 20 yrs ago at the age of 93. She told us that as a young mother of many children she needed to get away one day. Leaving the older children in charge, she walked to the next farm where she found the older farmer's wife sitting at the treadle with the needle thru her finger. She just looked up at Grandma and said what should I do? Grandama just laughed and stepped on the treadle so the needle would come out. She had been sitting there for hours waiting for her husband to come home. Never forget that story.

shortstuff 05-20-2011 03:44 AM

Been there done that several times. ouch

Olivia's Grammy 05-20-2011 03:52 AM

Haven't done that for a very long time. Sure hope it doesn't happen any time soon.

grammydar 05-20-2011 03:59 AM

Ouch!!! Makes me cringe just reading this. Guess I'll wait a bit to get to my sewing! LOL

Did the same thing. Just pulled it out, put on some antibiotic and kept going!

gunny148 05-20-2011 04:27 AM

ooooorrraahh Marine Corps, that what i shouted when i did that. done it about a month or so ago... it was sore for a while

Homespun 05-20-2011 04:27 AM

Spoken like a true quilter (addicted)

QuiltingGrannie 05-20-2011 04:28 AM

I did that to the side of my finger right at the nail edge. I thought I had just cut it, but then saw where the needle had put a hole in the other side of my finger! I looked at it, said, " Oh well." Cleaned it real good, put super glue on it and a bandaid and kept going!

cjomomma 05-20-2011 04:45 AM

Yikes! That's something I haven't done and hope I never do. Knock on wood. :-)
Just make sure you keep it good and clean.

I did that once, I was about 7 years old. Learned never to do that again. Haven't. It's been 60 years, but I still remember. In those days you just pulled the needle out and put on a bandaid.

ptquilts 05-20-2011 04:52 AM

wow, no one has mentioned

ARE YOU UP TO DATE ON YOUR TETANUS SHOTS!!!!!

it's not just rusty nails, tetanus is everywhere, be careful with any puncture wound. I had to get one when I got a piece of plant material (dead iris stem) stuck in my thumb. Don't ask....

eimay 05-20-2011 05:09 AM

I did it once. I chose the emergency room. The doctor came in looked at it, said, Hmmm. Came back in pulled the needle (and thread) through and stuck my finger in iodine. It would have been faster and cheaper if I had done it myself. Good thinking on your part.

sewmuchmore 05-20-2011 05:12 AM

Makes me hurt just to think about it. But I understand about not going to the ER and setting around for hours!!!! Watch for infection.

Quiltzilla 05-20-2011 05:30 AM

At this very moment, my fingers are tingling as I think back to the time my fingers crossed the business end of my mom's sewing machine. I was four-years-old and my mother was letting me stitch together some scraps. I flipped the speed switch from low to high, pressed my leg against the leg-switch and the fabric leapt through the feed dogs. As the my fingers were pulled toward the needle, I tensed up and gripped the fabric against the throat-plate and, my legs gripped the chair. As I gripped the chair, my legs splayed pressing the leg-switch farther. My tiny fingers zipped through and were sewn together in a flash. The needle stitched large straight stitches across three of my fingers near the first knuckle. I pulled my fingers away from the machine, now with fabric scraps attached to them, and my mother pulled me over to her lap. She quietly calmed me and snipped the stitches one by one, pulling out the threads with tweezers. My angel was working hard that day as the needle had missed every bone and there was no permanent damage.

That ended the sewing lesson for the day and left me with a vivid memory that remains with me to this day. With the retelling of this memory, I cannot resist rubbing the area that got stitched together and and 're-feeling' the tingle of panic.

Quiltzilla 05-20-2011 05:30 AM

It double-posted for some reason.

hannajo 05-20-2011 06:04 AM

OMG! I can watch any disgusting thing on tv ER shows and the news. I have to tell my husband "turn your head if you don't want to see this." ... "ok, you can turn back now." But all these stories are giving me goose bumps and making me light-headed. May be because this stuff is close to home for me.

Now I'm wondering - should all of us quilters keep current on our tetanus shots? It seems like a good idea.

munchkinmama 05-20-2011 06:27 AM

+
I remember my mother doing that when I was a child. So scary. I hope it feels better soon. I am impressed with your bravery.

I've done this...and the tetnus shot is very important....BTW, if you hold the finger up in the air, rather than letting in hang down, the pulse beat is not as bad.

hikingquilter 05-20-2011 07:02 AM

Yup! Join the club. The needle skewered my finger and broke. I took the pliers and pulled it out. Cleaned the wound with peroxide, put a new needle in and kept on sewing.

mhansen6 05-20-2011 07:08 AM

Been there, done that. I was 17 at the time and my parents were out of town. My sister grabbed the pliers and pulled it out. Nothing much the emergency room could do since it was just a hole. I did clean it well. Yes I went ahead and finished my project also. But I also learned my lesson. My fingers stay well away from the needle now.

sherriequilts 05-20-2011 07:08 AM

oh yes. Did that with Gramma's treadle when I was 18 and had a job typing checks for an insurance company. Try typing accurately with 9 fingers! and having to take every one with mistakes to the supervisor to have voided. Remember those eraser pencils with the brush on the end?! Come to think of it, they'd be good for cleaning out the inside of a sewing machine!) Hope you heal up fast and Happy Quilting!

Kim Bohannon 05-20-2011 07:12 AM

I once sewed through the tip of my finger. Like a dummy, I left the needle in the down position and yanked my finger away...tore the tip of my finger open.
Thankfully it was at the VERY tip, so the tear was not too bad... It took forever to heal and hurt like crazy. Lesson learned, if you sew through your finger, pull the needle into the 'up' position and remove needle from machine before pulling hand away...

ljptexas 05-20-2011 07:29 AM

Ouch, is right!!! Brave woman. We can stand so much more pain that a man!!!

Rose_P 05-20-2011 07:32 AM

It happened to my mom, too, when she was trying to teach me to sew. It made a lasting impression on me.

Do take care!

Depending on where you live, there may be an urgent care walk-in clinic what would be much quicker than ER for a non-life-threatening situation. Check with your insurance company. Some are covered.

trolleystation 05-20-2011 08:05 AM

I only did that once a long time ago. Once was enough!!!
