Yesterday morning I was cruising the Craigslist ads. And I spied an ad in the items wanted section. It was written by a lady who had moved here from Texas and only brought what they could fit in a U-haul trailer and their mini van.
She asked for the usual items...My husband and I loaded up the back of my truck with a TV, dvd player, vcr , a chair and ottoman. Along with some extra pots and pans and some linens. And toys for their two sons. And she had to leave her machine behind, so I gave her my spare. She told me she was working on a quilt for her son when they had to move. Now she can finish it, I sent along the needles that go with it, a bunch of thread and the feet that fit it (including the walking foot and 1/4 seam foot).
They kept trying to pay us for the stuff, I just simply told them.....
"When we were younger, someone helped us out and we were just paying it forward." And my husband told them, "we have more than enough to spare." And as we were leaving the smiles on their faces were thanks enough.

I think you are TOTALLY awesome! What an incredibly kind thing to do, and you can believe that it's earned you some "good karma" points, even tho you didn't do it for that reason!! :)

I believe in karma, if you do good things, it comes back to you tenfold. I have been blessed so far with a good life.
I know we all have been in their place one time or another, it's a hard thing to start over with just the stuff you can carry.

craftybear 06-20-2010 08:31 PM

What a wonderful, generous thing for you to do!!!

mom-6 06-21-2010 07:02 PM

Isn't it wonderful to have the opportunity to share with others? Especially since you know what it's like to have been in their shoes. Of course I've found that those who are most generous have very often been ones who at some time in their life have been on the receiving end of things.

So true, back in the mid '80's my house was broken into while the kids and I were out of town. We came back to the backdoor wide open, the frig open and groceries everywhere. I was so upset, that someone stole from my children. If they had knocked at the door while I was home, I would have given them the groceries.
Our landlord heard about this and came over with a trunk full of things he had bought at the store. He didn't get upset when our 45 lb. pitbull puppy left dirty paw prints on his expensive suit pants.

walen 06-21-2010 07:46 PM

You and your hubby are the salt of the earth! Thank you for helping.

littlehud 06-21-2010 09:03 PM

What a wonderful thing to do. There are roses on your souls.

tolepainter54 06-21-2010 09:15 PM

What a wonderful thing to do. It is so refreshing when faith in humanity is restored. I know there are good people in the world, but when you read the paper or watch the news, they are no where to be found. Many blessings to your family.

What a sweet and kind gesture you and your husband did. It has to be hard to leave things behind when you really don't want to. I can only imagine how you made that lady feel. Kudos to you!

Nanjun 06-22-2010 05:03 AM

Ramona Byrd 06-22-2010 03:52 PM

One lovely good deed that I'll always remember was
about 45 or 46 years ago. I was a single mother with
4 and 5 year old daughters, and for some reason I had
to take them to Texas from California to see their grand
parents. In Southern CA my old car broke down at dusk,
and the only one who would stop was an old black man.
I didn't know him and refused his offer of a lift. So this
kind gentleman went home and brought back his wife.
An experienced mother, she herded me home with my
kids, fed us and her husband fixed my car and drove it
back to their home. She even gave me a big covered
dish of stew (it was delicious) and sent us on our way.
Some how I lost their address, but since they refused
payment, I've always done what they asked. They
said that when I got to where I could help others, to
do the same to other black folks, and tell them to help
other white folks. I've done that several times over the
years, and still bless the memory of that old couple.
I've always felt bad that I never could send them at least
a card for their kindness.

sewnsewer2 06-22-2010 04:05 PM

How very generous of you. I bet they will always remember you helping them out.

magpie 06-22-2010 05:35 PM

That was a wonderful thing to do. They will always remember you and your DH.
