Looks like a hawk, we have them in MO that have red tails
This has nothing to do with the bird but I use to live near you in Eagle Pa. small world I live in Roaring Spring Pa. near Altoona now.
Owls are predators, so if you have a small dog or kitty, better watch them. I saw on the news where an owl attacked a chihuahua and he was on a leash with his owner.

I think it is an immature Coopers Hawk.
He looks like a small hawk to me. Can't see his tail very well but if it has a striped appearance and about 11 inches it might be a sharp shinned. About 16 inches, maybe a Coopers. Both are year round in Ohio

Don't let any small animals out of the house. He does look well-fed.
Oh what a beautiful sight. I wish we had more owls here. I have never seen one.
It looks like an owl.
It is an Owl.
This is a hawk.

I'll vote for hawk. It does look like the sharp shinned that I was able to find on Google. Also, owls do not usually hunt in the daytime.

head is swiveled. My 6-yr old GD told me this. |

I just e-mailed the pictures to my cousin, who knows a great deal about birds. Hopefully, he will be able to give me an answer. I will let you all know if he can figure it out.
Whatever you decided he is - that is one beautiful bird
In our Peterson Field Guide - Western Birds, there is a Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl that looks quite a bit like your fellow. No "ears" and a sticky-outy little beak. Perhaps a close relative?
email those pictures to the state audobon society (or mine - pm me). they will identify the bird in a heartbeat.
we do that so often, we're on a first name basis with our state guy. LOL! those pictures are great. did you set up a tripod or just get lucky? |
My vote is either the broad winged or red shouldered hawk.
At first it looks like an owl we have around here. Did you know there is a northern hawk owl?
