Meet our new baby Bella! She is a 4 month old Golden Retriever/Husky mix. She is very timid. She wasn't physically abused but she was neglected and mistreated. We had to change her name because everytime it was said she would crawl on her belly to us like she was in trouble. She is like having a brand new puppy as she was never housebroken... so far here only one accident and that was because I didn't get to the leash in time. We just love her! The cat, Miss Paws isn't quite as impressed. She puffs up and hisses well! They have been nose to nose and so far no blood so that's a good sign!

She is my first anniversary gift from my husband. He asked me what I wanted and I said, "a dog," and that's just what I got!

Mine is skittish too. Don't know why she just was that way from day 1. She is scared of loud noises and thunderstorms I got her a thundershirt a couple months ago and love it!! It has made a big difference in her. Go to thundershirt.com

We rescued a 2-yr old that had been abused. Recovery is a slow process. Don't reward (coddle) inappropriate behavior and that will shorten the process. Introduce new situations a little at a time. Cesar Milan is the BEST teacher.

She looks like she's ready to get into lots of mischief...beautiful girl. Congrats.

Having done rescue for almost 18 years - the first thing we ALWAYS do is change their name. As you said, if you use their previous name they will associate it with their previous life. It is simple - new name = new life.

A lot of people think that you cannot change the name if they are older than a couple of months old. But we always change names. Sometimes because we have no choice. It isn't like you meet them at Animal Control and they say "Hi, my name is Buddy". But in cases like yours, because their old name was associated with a not-so-nice past.

My white boy came to us when he was 11 months old and his name was King. We quickly renamed Loki and have never had a recognition problem. Actually, my husband was talking to him a couple of days ago and mentioned the name 'King". Loki cocked his head, looked at my husband, gave a small bark, and then a low growl. Too funny. Obviously, he still hates that name and situation.

Enjoy your new girl. She will be the love of your life - right up their with your husband. And I still haven't figured it out but she will always remember that you 'saved' her and chose her. And she will thank you for it everyday for the rest of her life.

As a rescue person, I thank you for taking in a puppy that needed a new life and family. Being an older puppy can make it hard for her to find a new family. You will not be sorry that you did - I promise you that.

Beautiful new baby, congrats! Oh, and good luck with the training. I have a new two month old beagle puppy and I am not sure who is doing the training, me or her! Some days I believe she is.

sewnsewer2 07-03-2011 01:17 PM

Awww, Bella looks so sweet. Give her a hug for me!

Cybrarian 07-03-2011 01:21 PM

Good luck, I am sure she will be a good pet.
I wish I would have changed my dog's name when I adopted her, that might have helped her to stop old bad habits. I thought about it but, I didn't. After a 1-1/2 yrs. she is now a pretty good dog.

quilter1 07-03-2011 05:23 PM

She looks just beautiful. So glad she found a loving home. One of our Goldens was a rescue too, and she is the most adorable girl. Congragulations from me and my three Goldens, Jonah, Sam and Anna.

I love your puppy! What a sweet little kissible face.I have 2 rescued Silky terriers..now 16 years old. We got them when they were 6 1/2. One (Katie)came from a home where the kids grew up and left and the mom worked long hours and did not want her. She was delighted in joining us. Angel was the beloved dog of a young couple who had a baby the was alergic to dogs. She came to us totally bewildered. She would run to a baby carriage today. She sat by the door and waited for her family for quite a while. She loves us dearly now but it took a lot of love and time. Today, "the girls" are so happy and my grandchildren adore them. I came from a home where my parents owned a Collie kennel and only registered dogs were considered worthwhile. I now will only ever take a rescued animal. They are so loving and deserving.

Bella is adorable and I can tell she is in good hands. All they want is to be loved and they give us unconditional love. Enjoy her !!!!!

eastermarie 07-04-2011 07:23 AM

Our son gave our DIL a little yorkiepoo for their first anniversary. Your's is a bigger puppy but very cute, kitty will adjust in time.

polly13 07-04-2011 07:41 AM

She will be a loyal friend forever for having saved her from abuse; even if it was verbal, not physical, the pain can be so overwhelming. Love abounds forever.

Stitchit123 07-04-2011 07:46 AM

She is a real sweetie She will respond to all the love you give her and come out of her shell And Miss Paws has to let him know she has seniority They'll be fine Cats sure have a superior attitude My Mindy Sue lets me know how privelaged WE are to share her home-- Bless her heart :D :D

Beffy_Boo 07-04-2011 11:18 AM

Pretty, pretty, pretty girl! May you have many wonderful years together.

chris_quilts 07-04-2011 12:06 PM

What a sweet baby and such a face!! Love those eyes, too. Thank you for saving a life and giving her a new name. All of our pets are resucues in some form and they are the sweetest bunch of critters you ever want to meet unless the kitten is on a tear or on high on catnip!! Rescues make the best pets, IMHO.

Annz 07-04-2011 12:43 PM

She is too cute.

lorimax5859 07-04-2011 01:44 PM

She looks so sweet! Sounds like she's found a good home.
