At this moment, my children are in a plane over an ocean. It's an early graduation gift for both, through college break. It's the trip of a lifetime--I hope. That is the plan. They'll be spending New Years in Amsterdam, flying home from Paris. This was my 22 year old's first trip on a plane today. He's loving it so far, but we'll see what he thinks of a 6 hour flight. My daughter had only flown once before. They were so excited this morning. :-D

It's so strange to think they're so far away. They'll be fine...they'll be fine...they'll be fine....

Their mother is content to never venture more than 20 min from home.

marsye 12-29-2009 07:07 PM

They'll be fine...they'll be fine...they'll be fine ;-)

Piedmont Quilter 12-29-2009 07:09 PM

You are right - they'll be fine . . . they'll be fine. Now as for mom???? lol Don't worry (I know that's easier said than done) I hope they have a wonderful time - what a great gift!!

amma 12-29-2009 07:14 PM

Awww that is awesome that you are giving this opportunity to see some of the world!!! This may be their only opportunity and it is one that they will never forget :D:D:D
Relax Mom...they will be ok...you raised them well :D:D:D

Shemjo 12-29-2009 07:37 PM

That is a wonderful gift for your children! Congratulations of letting them go! The true test of a parent.

sawsan 12-29-2009 07:38 PM

They will be fine, and good 4 u to weening them bec we raised them to time different than ours

sharon b 12-29-2009 08:13 PM

Just relax Mom, take a few deep breaths and you will be fine...and so will they  Hope they enjoy and check in with Mom lots, that way you won't worry "as much" , maybe :?

On the other hand what an awesome adventure

Harmony 12-29-2009 08:18 PM

You know you raised them right and they can take care of themselves. Travel is broadening, and will give them an education they could never get in college. And when they get home they'll be so full of stories that you will never regret sending them on this trip!!!

barnbum 12-29-2009 08:18 PM

The botched terrorist attack two days before they left sure didn't help. Oh, mothering is tough business.

The program they are with is all done with a tour guide, so I know they're in good hands. They had to get there on their own, but will be met at the airport by the guide.

barnbum 12-30-2009 04:01 AM

I woke three minutes before the text "we just landed!" came through. :-D

Roots and wings.... You're a great Mom :-)

Sew piecefully while they are on their adventure!

barnbum 12-30-2009 06:52 AM

Now I need to start worrying about them getting back!

kay carlson 12-30-2009 07:00 AM

Yesterday, I had our two DGDs here and they toured the sewing room. I am making pink socks today for a baby doll.
Of course, I couldn't resist the opportunity to teach the girls about the log cabin block. They listened intently while I explained the traditional colors (red or yellow) for the enter patch. Then they each received a small ornament to place on their Christmas tree. I was thinking of you and your love of the log cabin block. Dear Friend,
we will all keep your children in our hearts and prayers for safe travel. Sew--you may now relax at home :-)Hugs

Ninnie 12-30-2009 07:32 AM

What a wonderful gift!! And yes, they will be fine!!

Joan 12-30-2009 08:19 AM

Oh, Karla, they will have a wonderful time!

What a wonderful gift to your children!

I can relate, though..... The 2 years 3 months my youngest served in the Peace Corp in Nicaragua was worrisome to say the least....... She was sick a lot of the time and the living conditions weren't the greatest. On a positive note, her Nica neighbors were like family to her and made sure she was okay on a daily basis. I am still thanking them....

Bevanger 12-30-2009 08:37 AM

hard to let go huh? you did go tho. they'll be just fine

No, no. That's stress you don't need. Save that until they're back in the air.

Aww--thank you so much.

barnbum 12-30-2009 03:53 PM

I received a text--they are in their rooms for the night and are happy and tired. They saw some amazing sites today and are headed back out for more first thing in the morning. Happy sigh. :-D

I'm not giving out specifics due to their safety--overly cautious mother. I can share more later.

LOL So glad they are keeping you updated and so frequently ! You did an awesome job raising them and now it is showing . They don't want you to worry

tlrnhi 12-31-2009 08:59 AM

They sent a photo?
Where is it?
You aren't going to share with us??????

Karla....they will be fine.
A 6 hour flight is nothing....Takes me 8 hours to get to Hawaii.
My flight to get here was....7.5 hours from Guam to Hawaii. 4 hour layover. 7 hours from Hawaii to Houston. 1 hour layover. 3 hour flight from Houston to Jacksonville, FL.
I'll trade JUST a 6 hour flight anyday! lol

THEY WILL BE FINE!! They have a phone, they have internet, they have all the modern conveniences there is. I know, you are still going to worry, that is our job as moms.........

MadQuilter 12-31-2009 11:55 AM

They will be fine. REALLY! I go through the worries every time I fly to see my family and those 13 hours travel time are NOT fun. Particularly now, the restrictions will be much more stringent.

barnbum 12-31-2009 05:10 PM

They called! They were on a bus from the fireworks back to the hotel. 2 AM They're happy, but tired and looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow. My daughter said the food there is delicious. My cousin, who lives just an hour away from where they are, is meeting them tomorrow!! Yay!!

Thanks for the prayers. :-D

sharon b 12-31-2009 05:11 PM

See , so far away and yet they check in all the time ! You raised them very well  And how fun to travel so far and get to meet family

barnbum 12-31-2009 05:14 PM

Thanks, Sharon. They are good kids. My son, age 22, still texts me every time he leaves for college and when he arrives there. He comes home every weekend because his college is in the middle of nowhere. They've always been good about keeping in touch.

littlehud 12-31-2009 08:38 PM

What a wonderful gift for them. I'm sure they will have a great time and be home before you know it.

wvdek 12-31-2009 11:18 PM

Glad they are having a great time. What a wonderful gift you gave them.

Gotta love that techno stuff.

Right now it is 2:10 a.m. and I am waiting for DD (33 1/2) to get home from working the music hall tonight. Due to fog and sleet and now ice on the roads, I think I would rather have her on a 6 hour plane ride than over these roads on a bad night.

Once a mom, alway's a mom. They'll be fine, they'll be fine,

sharon b 01-02-2010 11:24 AM

What a GREAT picture ! And they look so happy  Glad they are keeping you so well updates, helps a little in the worry department

butterflywing 01-02-2010 11:28 AM

karla, you have given them such wonderful presents. they will never forget the trip or the confidence you have in them. both gifts will last a lifetime.

barnbum 01-02-2010 11:36 AM

Thanks. I think it was definitely the right gift to pick!! When Justin first got his licence, I told him to not fight me when I said no to driving somewhere--that the more he left and came home safely, the more I'd loosen up. I think that's the way it'll be with flying around--if either starts to make a habit of it.

barnbum 01-06-2010 06:48 PM

They're home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

sharon b 01-06-2010 09:01 PM

 Can't wait to hear more about the trip

dannypanny 01-06-2010 09:23 PM

hi just read your "adventure" with the kids being away and now I read they are home!!! yeah What a great gift to give a child. I was given an option when I was 21 either to have a party or a ticket to Italy. Guess what I chose???? I am over 50 and I can still remember the excitement of travelling aone. I did stay with relations and I was never alone, but it was great... I am a firm believer in giving children memories. Have a great time listening to their adventures... Glad you shared your feelings with us. ciao
