Yeah Terri, that was me who woke up Tracy when Diana finally got around to foaling  I had been watching her allday/night for months and got lucky to be able to see her foal

Pacific Pintos 07-23-2009 02:59 PM

I am sorry to tell you that both the mare and foal were lost yesterday.

The mare went into labor Tuesday night. My husband and I were both there with her. Unfortunatly all four legs and the head with no muzzle were felt. The foal was already dead. Though we tried and were able to reposition the mare somewhat we ended up taking her to two different vet centers many hours away from our home.

They were able to successfully remove the dead foal at the second hospital, however the mare had sustained some injuries and had to be euthanized. I held her while this happened.

We brought them home and buried them both together last night.

We have one more mare due to foal in the next couple of weeks. Hopefully that will have a successful outcome.

Kayla told me of this site and said you had been watching Precious. Thank you all for doing that and I am sorry to have to report such bad news.

Joanne

being an animal lover, I cried many tears for your loss and am having trouble typing this. The pain of losing our animals is terrible. I am so sorry for your loss.

tlrnhi 07-23-2009 07:23 PM

Joanne, I am truely sorry about Precious and her little "michelangelo" she was making. I had been following the thread on the mini horse forum and watching her as much as I could. It's just a tragedy and my heart goes out to you. Big hugs to you!

But on a happier note..........

WOOHOO!! Come on ladies! There's another on that's gonna foal!
Everyone got their list of phone numbers handy?

Terri, I missed the link to watch for Joanne's. COuld you post it here so it can be found when the time comes.

Again, I am so sorry about the sad outcome. Prayers are being sent.

Kyia :(

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.

Hopefully all will go better on this last foaling and you can rejoice instead of being sad.

billswife99 07-24-2009 07:22 AM

Thank you for giving us the new link! I will be watching and hoping for the best for this one. Life just hands out some hard circumstances sometimes, but it always leaves us appreciating what we still have.

Debra Mc 07-25-2009 05:49 PM

So sorry to hear you lost mama & baby. I lost my lab & all her puppies one time. She was in labor but they would never come out. Was too late to get to vet, she died in process. Our hearts bleed over our animals as well as our families.

Joanne, our sadness is as much on your behalf as it is for Precious and her foal. And we send you hugs, knowing that only time will help the hurt.

Pacific Pintos 07-25-2009 06:25 PM

As her caretaker, I wish I could have done something.

I was here at the ranch 24/7 for five weeks. On call for her since Father's Day in June.

Just not fair.

Shemjo 07-25-2009 06:30 PM

Just found this thread. I can hardly see through the tears. So sad. :(

tlrnhi 07-25-2009 06:43 PM

No, Joanne, it's not fair and never will be. Hate that part of life!

Just remember...come back here and let us know/updates about the mare that's in the stall. Some of us are watching and I can bet your number is already on speed dial for some. Just ask Kaykay, she'll tell you. :) :)

sharon b 07-25-2009 09:12 PM

I hate when life leaves us more questions than answers. Yes please keep us posted on the next mare. I will be popping in and out to check but after a few I know that when labor starts it is very fast. You and Precious are still in my thoughts and prayers.
Sharon

Joanne, I had the good fortune to be off for about a week before Precious foaled. I had the laptop on all the time, even set it up in my bedroom!  I saw how you took care of her. I knew that you were watching all night too, just catching winks here and there, and I know that sometimes people called you with false alarms, further interrupting any sleep you managed to catch. And I was watching as everything happened. Just as I was going to call, I saw your shadow on cam and knew you were there. I saw that you did everything you could and that you had others there with you who were trying everything they could, also.

And I know that none of that really makes you feel better, that you believe that because Precious was yours, and your responsibility, that there must have been something that you could have done to have changed the outcome.

I know this because I am a critical care nurse, and have been a pediatric critical care nurse. Death is a common occurrence, and there are many times I've felt that if only we had done X instead of Y, or if only Z had worked,......... Sometimes I think I've shrouded as many kids as I've diapered. When I first started Peds ICU, a very wise MD told me "Fair is a man-made concept. In life, the only real definition of FAIR is a place with a midway and rides that sells popcorn and cotton candy". And he was right.

That being said, I've read all the responses on the MiniHorseForum, and have been absolutely astounded at the posts of similar incidents, even this year. From what I have been reading, if this is the first mare you've ever lost in 16 years, it is obvious that you are doing something very right.

I know that this last foaling will be the hardest yet as you wait, just because of what happened to Precious. When that foal is born, and all of us watching give a big cheer, I know that you will feel it in your heart too.

Gai

kaykay 07-26-2009 04:52 AM

It is every breeders worst nightmare and my heart goes out to Joanne. Sending good wishes that the rest of your foalings go easily and happily!

Kay

Bevanger 07-26-2009 05:46 AM

I'm just sick to read about mom & baby (just found this post)
I'm so very sorry

Pacific Pintos 07-26-2009 03:31 PM

Gai thank you for your response. You are right as her caretaker and friend I feel responsible for everything that happened, from deciding to breed her on and I took that responsibility seriously.

I knew when I broke that sac and felt the first time that this was THE WORST possible position.

The key to a well run breeding facility is management, management, management.

This time my luck just ran out. A friend of mine said after I checked the position I looked up into the camera with such pain and just shooked my head no.

To wait so long and then have not only a dead foal, but to loose the mare is excrusiatingly painful.

We learn to realize a dead foal is possible, just not the mare.

Thank you for your very kind words.

tlrnhi 07-27-2009 01:08 AM

Joanne...just know that we all are sad for you.
We love your horses,,,,,ok, ANYONES horses as much as the owners do.
And to let us into your lives to actually see the foals being born is just awesome!
I'm just hoping I get back to the states in time, get unpacked and am able to get to a certain farm to see it in person! Just need to get my "water boiling skills" in order :) :)

barnbum 07-27-2009 03:09 PM

Joanne--I'm so glad you found this post and all the support you have here....

Pacific Pintos 07-29-2009 10:43 PM

We had a filly this evening!

Desire foaled early, but we were ready for her.

Thank you all for watching and caring. It means a lot to me.

Joanne

amma 07-29-2009 11:09 PM

And a beautiful little filly she is!!! :D :D :D

No Sharon, I think I missed the foaling by minutes, too :(
I would have called ya, had I just pulled up the cam a little sooner....
But she sure is a joy to watch 8) 8) 8)

tlrnhi 07-30-2009 12:17 AM

Aw, RATS! I missed it too!
Power has been going on and off lately.
They say it's from the heat/humidity. UGH!

Congrats on the new foal!

zyxquilts 07-30-2009 12:52 PM

Congrats! Every time I tried the cam yesterday, just had a black screen.
She's sleeping now - is she all white except for the "hat"? :D

Pacific Pintos 07-30-2009 07:23 PM

She is a bay pinto filly with blue eyes.

She is mostly white except for the medicine hat and the tail area.

Unlike our last one that was born really late, this one was born REALLY early. 301 days. She is a premee.

We have her in a burgundy blanket (grey flannel lined) to keep her warm and an added heat lamp at night (it is in the 50's to 60's here at the coast, and foggy this week).

I hope to get some photos soon when she is ready to be out without her blanket.

She weighs 21 pounds and can cruise under her mom's belly!

Quite cute!

I will post them here then.

gaigai 07-30-2009 07:27 PM

Joanne, I've been watching her tonight, and she is soooooooo cute. But still kinda wobbly it seems, and she's been sleeping a lot. Kay's little Rumor was kinda "underbaked" and was a fainting foal for a while. She's kinda like he was. She nurses and then just flakes out!! When I first started watching her, she slept for almost 30 minutes without moving. I almost phoned, but then she got up, thank goodness. Gosh, I just want to squeeze her!!! :D

Pacific Pintos 07-30-2009 07:37 PM

They just need time to get a grip on life. She was very strong after she was born.

Once she nurses and gets her tummy filled she just crashes and burns. You are right that she is out cold.

She is not a fainter, just underbaked and need a bit more time to get her land legs.

She did not keep up with her dams milk production today and had dried milk all over her muzzle this evening. She was not fond of my washing it off either! :-)

She will be in there a while so she should be quite entertaining to watch!

She was obviously in a hurry to get out! :D

sharon b 07-30-2009 08:16 PM

I have been watching her quite a bit also , and she is just ssssoooo cute  Glad she is doing well . Please keep us posted and THANKS for sharing with us and keeping us posted
Sharon

billswife99 07-30-2009 08:18 PM

I am so happy for this little one! Even if she did come early and I missed it. :D

Pacific Pintos 07-30-2009 08:23 PM

You have no idea how happy we are to end our foaling year this way vs last week.

Though I like the mares to "cook" them longer, I am thrilled that everything turned out well.

bearisgray 07-30-2009 08:29 PM

where can I find the pictures?

tlrnhi 07-30-2009 08:53 PM

Bear, you can watch the little cutie here
http://wefoal.com/_wfcams/pacpintos/cam.php

She is just adorable!
There aren't any pics up yet, so hopefully there will be some soon!

bearisgray 07-30-2009 09:00 PM

Thank you. They are as cute as can be.

dimplesinjuly 07-30-2009 10:35 PM

Hey, the little one and I share a birthday, Happy Birthday, little cutie!!!

Well, have you ever seen a baby that DID like to have it's face washed! :P

She is such a cutie! When she tries to run, it just cracks me up!!

You don't know how happy I am that she's doing well! Hugs to both of you.

Pacific Pintos 08-02-2009 07:24 AM

Here she is at last! She has been too small as a premie and our weather too cool to take off her blanket and take some photos. She has Sapphire Blue eyes and has been named Pacific Sapphire Rose.

Desire is an excellent dam and watches over her perfectly. Calm, but watchful. A professional mom!
