Funny I should read your message today - I'm away on a business trip, called home this morning - my husband held the phone for my dog Abigail to listen to my voice. I think I miss Abigail more than I miss my husband LOL

Who else admits to talking to their pets on the telephone?

Any funny stories?

When my daughter was ill with cancer and we stayed at Ronald McDonald house in Houston she would talk to our boxer every day.

lillybeck 09-20-2011 06:11 AM

Yes and I make no excuses for this!

sapdoggie 09-20-2011 07:05 AM

My grand kids want to talk to the dogs when they call grandma

quiltmom04 09-20-2011 07:12 AM

Oh yes! They recognize my voice even over the phone!

Ok ok, I admit, I do!!!! Lol whenever I travel I always call to say hi to dbf and ask to speak to luckie, our dog. She turns her head from side to side, lol.

Rann 09-20-2011 08:24 AM

Of course I talk to my dog.

quiltmau 09-20-2011 09:31 AM

I use speaker when my DH calls when on the road. Both dogs and cats look my way and try to figure where he is.

SuzyQ 09-20-2011 09:36 AM

Of course! We don't have human kids and the dog is as close to a kid as I will have and when I must travel I miss him like crazy so when I talk to DH I talk to Thor too.

JanetM 09-20-2011 10:18 AM

Yes, I admit it. I talk to my bird over the phone. And he talks to me!

gramquilter2 09-20-2011 11:02 AM

YES, but she more often then not goes with me.

damaquilts 09-20-2011 11:37 AM

I talk to my granddogs and even the grand cat. Spike the cat just looks at the phone and his mom like she is nuts but the dogs whine . I lived with my DD for 8 yrs and trained them so they know my voice.

Flo Pierce 09-20-2011 11:37 AM

OH yes. Our daughter leaves her Malmute Husky, Yukon with
us when she works a long day. When she comes to pick him up
he always says, ( I want to go home) He talks lots to us. Of
course we have to know dog speaking. I know we are foolish
but he is a smart doggie and so good. He also loves out cats
although he could really give them trouble.

Animals (dogs and Cats) are much smarter than we give them
credit for. Most folks have them but don't spend enough time
with them.

Yes, I do when whoever is pet sitting is willing to turn on the speaker phone and allow the dogs to listen. I know it is weird to so people, but I see it no different than if i'm talking to one of my kids or grandchildren.

romanojg 09-20-2011 11:57 AM

For the past couple of years I've been babysitting my son's akita (Bandit). I let him talk to his baby one time and then told him never again. For about 2 weeks after the call the dog was like a terrible twos child; into everything which was totally against his character. We were so happy when he mellowed out so he has to wait until May when my son gets home to talk to him.

IBQUILTIN 09-20-2011 12:39 PM

I just came home yesterday from a two week stay in the hospital, and I talked to my little Chuey every day tht I could. She recognized my voice, and just made me feel closer to home

I'm glad you're back. I hope everything goes well for you. Two weeks is a long time.

dixiebelle162002 09-20-2011 01:58 PM

I will admit that I do and I don't feel ashamed of it either. My husband puts the phone to his ear and asked him if he wants to speak to mommy. He is a Boston terrier so he just kind of grunts and makes snorting noises, but it is cute.

cr12cats 09-20-2011 02:45 PM

when we had the old answer machine that you could hear the message being recorded as they were leaving it we would call and say hi to the kittys. i had my husband do that and watched while they would look for him in the phone and hug it.the cat we just lost a few months ago thought the phone calls were for her so i would put it on the phone on speaker phone and she would purr and meow like she was part of the conversation too. our others now that are left could care less so we don't have to share the phone anymore

tutt 09-20-2011 03:41 PM

Not my dog but I have to talk to my "little brother" every week. Drives me insane!!

cherrio 09-20-2011 03:42 PM

nope

Krafty Nancy 09-20-2011 04:14 PM

Zeke's legs aren't long enough to enable him to reach the phone...but, if they were, I'm sure he could do it and carry on an intelligent conversation! Animals!!!! Aren't they wonderful (most of the time.) By the way...that's Zeke picture you see in my profile.

momto5 09-20-2011 04:16 PM

I usually talk to mine via the answering machine! And then, of course, there is the one poodle who kisses me awake each and EVERY morning... :P ...Don't 'cha love 'em!!!!

donnalynett 09-20-2011 04:49 PM

When I was working I would call the house during the day and when the answering machine picked up the call I would "talk" to my dog.

auniqueview 09-20-2011 06:12 PM

When I was away from home for months, and even on this last trip for a couple weeks, I talked to the dogs over the phone. They know Mom's voice, and they miss me if I'm not there. Why would you NOT talk to your furkids?

sassey 09-20-2011 07:19 PM

My little dog has brought me so much pleasure and anytime I have to leave her even just to go outside she gets very hyper. She really has anxiety problems. So if I have to be gone very long I always ask to talk to her when I call her sitter. It seems to make her very happy I am told

my dd is a vet. tech and takes her pup to work every day - on her way home, she usually calls me. I'm on speakerphone so 'Bacon' hears my voice and 'talks' to her nanny - too cute!

leakus 09-20-2011 07:41 PM

I am laughing at the memories you brought back to my mind. Some 15 yrs ago i had a Husky, love that dog! When he was a puppy he was at home alone whIle we were working and he would "destroy" things around the house so I used to call him and "reprimend" him for whatever he might have been doing that day. Dh and I would laugh about his reaction- hide under the table and stay still for some time.
This past week Dh (not the same as above) was telling me he misses Pearl- our cat when he is at work, so I told him: put a camera and watch her in internet, see what she does around the house. We were laughing at the idea, I bet he is thinking about it.

sljolander 09-20-2011 08:27 PM

Im getting ready to go out of town for 6 days and was thinking of getting an answering machine so I could talk to my girls....(my husband will finally commit me) lol

Dee 09-20-2011 09:00 PM

When I worked I used to call and talk to her.

madamekelly 09-20-2011 09:26 PM

Several years ago, while visiting my sister's home in the next town over, in Texas, her telephone rang. She looked at the caller ID, and said "Kelly, it's your number!" (I lived alone). She picked up the telephone and began to yell into it "I don't know who you are, but you'd better get the hell out of my sister's house now! I'm calling the police!" as she went to hang up, she heard "rowr". She started to laugh real hard and handed the phone to me. I put it to my ear to hear "meow". I had left my cordless phone laying on the bed, buttons up, and my cat Bruno stepped on the redial button! We had to drive the 22 miles back to my house to hang it up, since her home was long distance from mine! That's right, my cat made a long distance call, to tell me to come home! He is no longer allowed to use the phone, since he did not ask first!

No, I haven't done that. But when I was in college, my roommate (and best friend) moved in with her boyfriend and took her cat. We had been friends since the 3rd grade and I had helped her pick out her kitten "Feets". Feets had extra toes on all four feet. Anyway, my friends parents loved her cat and one day her dad called. Only he asked to speak to Feets! I wasn't thinking and said, "Feets doesn't live here anymore." Oops! I recovered quickly and said I was kidding, but that she was taking a nap. Whew! That was close.

Marvel 09-20-2011 10:42 PM

When our oldest son joined the Marines and was sent overseas he missed the dog so much he'd call and we held the phone to her ear. She would get real excited and whine and then look for him. It helped him and her too. Thanks for reminding us how an animal can miss the owner. He came home safely. What a reunion.

Mistress of the thread 09-21-2011 02:56 AM

When I am at work I would call my pug and say Chowser get off the couch now. It worked DH told me he came home sick one day didn't pick phone up fast enough and saw it.

JeannieT 09-21-2011 08:51 AM

yes, I do too. My boxer will "speak" back when I talk to him!!

Sheila_H 09-21-2011 09:22 AM

When my husband travels on business I will put him on the speaker and when he calls our dogs name he comes crashing into the room. Our dog sits by the phone and tilts his head side to side its so cute.

If we leave him at the pet resort they actually post a daily journal online so everyone can see what their day was like. Sometimes they post photos too I swear we worry about our boxer like he's one of our children lol, I know its sad isn't it!
