Had to go to Joplin to Petsmart today. First time I have been over there since the tornado. My gosh, it's just piles of rubble! You just wouldn't believe!

Just had to take a pic of the JoAnn's store. Don't think I will be shopping there anytime soon! The white you see through the windows is SKY! There is no roof or back walls. Sorry the pic is not so good, but it's hard to drive and take a picture and not run into anybody.

I heard from a clerk at the JoAnns in Fayetteville, AR that they were already planning to build a new building in Joplin before the tornado hit, and it's going to be bigger and better than the one that was there. YAY!!! I also heard that the company was extremely considerate of the employees and has taken good care of them financially and in other ways. That's really good to hear!

My heart goes out to all of the folks that lost everything...Mother Nature was was not nice...

earlylace 06-11-2011 03:42 PM

thats terrible, mother nature at its worst

Ginger2010 06-11-2011 03:45 PM

Wow! Unbelievable! Looks like some of the fabric strung around by the building! What a shame! My heart goes out to all that was involved with that terrible storm! Thank you for sharing the photo!

grayma 06-11-2011 03:47 PM

I hope it's true that the company is taking care of the employees. So often these chains think of their employees as indentured servants! That makes me want to shop at JoAnn's a little more often. I try to give my LQS my business for fabric, but I usually use my coupons for batting and incidentals.

QuiltingNinaSue 06-11-2011 03:48 PM

Thank you for sharing the photo. I read in the Jolpin newspaper how everyone gathered with the manager and the soft walls protected them from harm. Blessings in the mist of bad weather conditions. Thanks to the Man above, Ruler of all things.

We have family in Joplin...their home and neighborhood were leveled. They were lucky to escape with their lives. This was an EF 5 tornado...the strongest since the 1930's I believe.

Sometimes these photos just seem so 'close to home', so identifiable with, for those of us from far away from the scene. I still get a knot in my stomach over this event. Saw a donation collection point at the grocery store here in Lynchburg VA this morning.

It will take a long time for all these towns that were hit to get back up and running.

jaciqltznok 06-11-2011 09:15 PM

I wonder where all those bolts of fabric ended up...and spools of thread..they must have traveled for miles!

owlvamp 06-11-2011 09:22 PM

That is so sad.

Aunt Sue 06-11-2011 10:56 PM

Very Sad!

helou 06-12-2011 02:44 AM

so devastating!

quilt crazee 06-12-2011 04:51 AM

SOOOO-where do all the bolts go? Did someone wake up w/a field of cotton to harvest?we all see the cars & building supplies ripped up or set aside. Never really thought about where ALL the stuff in a store ends up! HMMMMM....

Sue Fish 06-12-2011 05:32 AM

Wow

Quilter2B 06-12-2011 06:44 AM

How sad; you never really get a feel for any natural disaster until you see it in person.

pugmom 06-12-2011 07:06 AM

How sad!!!

grannypat7925 06-12-2011 10:24 AM

We heard on the news yesterday that they are now having problems with fungus infection that can be deadly.......forget the name mucor...........something. Those poor people have been thru soooo much. My heart goes out to them! Cannot imagine what that would be like but I know it would be extremely devastating!

emsgranny 06-12-2011 10:26 AM

This is soo sad!!! It will take the town a long time to recover - our prayers are with them

I was born and raised in Joplin, although I've been gone for many years. It is just heartbreaking to see the demolition, the deaths and the injuries. The city looks like Nagasaki after the bomb. Thanks so much for posting this photo.

Melinda in Tulsa 06-12-2011 11:16 AM

What happened to the picture? It doesn't show up for me.

lisajane 06-12-2011 12:01 PM

That is a sad situation, and I have shed some tears for Joplin, But I have to say it is very enlightening to know that the company has took the initiative to help those who have lost there jobs. That makes you feel good, even if you are a few states away.

campbellkidone 06-12-2011 12:08 PM

We moved from Joplin 4 years ago. A very dear friend of mine and her daughter were in JoAnns when the tornado hit. She said that they all crammed in the small bathroom and began praying. Rubble covered them quickly, but they all came out alive. She posted pictures of the pile that they crawled out of on FaceBook. I'll see if I can get it posted here. Please continue to pray for everyone there. There is alot of work to be done and many lives were lost.

d.swindle 06-12-2011 02:26 PM

It hurts, every time I see the news about joplin, I was born and raised south on joplin,it hits very close to my heart
I haven't lived in missouri for many years, but you never forget where you called home.

People for our church and community have been going to clean up -- one site at a time--today a friend reported that she found two perfect precious moments figurines in perfect condition under a pile of pure rubble. Another friend reported finding several hundred dollars in a house's rubble. We are sending lots of supplies and $$ from here. It's only 80 miles away. My son went with the Southern Baptist Missionary Board and while there in a destroyed church met a man who was back looking for his Bible. One of the visitors found the Bible!!!! Terrible devastation but such an opportunity to reach out in love.

Briar Rose 06-12-2011 04:03 PM

Wouldn't it be neat to send quilts?

Rose Ann 06-12-2011 04:04 PM

In addition to what the Company is doing, JoAnn employees around the country have contributed money through their store managers/corporate office for the Joplin employees. Haven't heard how much was donated, but in this situation every bit helps.

Momsmurf 06-12-2011 04:31 PM

That's sad...
but had a thought while looking at it....wonder where all the fabric ended up?

The company of Joann's has certainly earned my respect and business, whenever I am near one, if they stepped up and took care of their employees.
