I've just had a house fire because of a stupid $2 extension cord. I had 2 things plugged into it that were not in use and it fried. I probably have close to $100k in damages because of this.

Please, please, please, go around your homes and get rid of those cords and replace either with strips or 3 prong cords. You really don't want what has transpired happening, this is not fun at all. I've lost both of my machines in this, tons of my notions and fabrics. Some I can't even find! Disintegrated!!! All my projects, gone! Pressies, gone!

We lucked out that we were home when it happened or I would not have a house. That is not worth a $2 item on any budget.

Please keep yourself and your families safe!!!! Especially with the holidays coming, everyone uses those cords. Don't! Please.

PegD 10-23-2011 06:07 AM

So sorry this has happened to you. Thank you for the warning.

jrhboxers 10-23-2011 06:07 AM

I am so sorry to hear about this. My husband is a volunteer fire fighter so everything we have a heavy duty extensions or power strips.

Glad that no one was hurt but what a heart ache. Hugs and prayers to you.

Highmtn 10-23-2011 06:07 AM

My home burned up in 2003 due to a short in the inner wall wiring. MY HEARTFELT CONDOLENCES!

It's horrible ordeal, and what my insurance company put me through (I had to sue them) was almost worse then the fire.

We had no loss of life...even got the hamster out.. so we felt blessed. We lost a LOT, but not everything.

I will take your advice and go check the house... I think we have everything on power strips...but I'll make sure. We always change the batteries in our 7 smoke detectors annually too.

((((((((((((((Hugs))))))))))))))))))))

chelgvns 10-23-2011 06:08 AM

I'm so sorry for your loss! I appreciate the heads up, we do use these and will be replacing them pronto

Sadiemae 10-23-2011 06:09 AM

I am so sorry for your fire. I don't have any extension cords that are not the thick round ones and the serger strips.

PABerard 10-23-2011 06:13 AM

I am so sorry for your house fire. And thank you for your thoughtfulness in warning all of us to such a simple fix. Good luck with sorting out this mess

oldswimmer 10-23-2011 06:14 AM

Oh my....soooo Sorry to hear about your loss...but so thankful that you, your family AND the hamster are ok. Thanks for the heads up. I will be checking my cords through the house now too.

I will also keep a good thought about dealing with your insuruance company. Let me know when you are ready, and I will help you restock your stash ! I am very serious. I have so much, and would love nothing more than to share some with a fellow QB member that may need some. I can even send it now if you are ready. PM me when you are ready and what you may like, and I will send you a box.

Wishing you the best, and glad you and family are safe!

So sorry for your lose. Had a housefire. I know how upsetting it is. Hugs

SueSew 10-23-2011 06:44 AM

So sorry this happened to you, That must have been frightening. What a terrible experience and just when the weather here is taking the corner into November cold. I hope you have somewhere warm to be while the repairs are done on your house. Please don't beat yourself up about the extension cord. It could be that either it or one of the cords attached to it was faulty, or even the wall socket it was plugged into was not grounded properly.

What kinds of gifts did you lose? I know I have some UFO's that I could send.

NauDeeGal 10-23-2011 06:58 AM

I am so sorry that you had a fire caused by a cheap extension cord. Thank you for warning us also. I will double check and get rid of any if I still have any of them around here.

hannajo 10-23-2011 07:32 AM

I'm so sorry for your fire and loss of those things. I am, however, thankful that no people or animals were hurt. Thank God you were home and awake when it happened.

I've heard it said before to not use those cheap extension cords, but now I really know how dangerous they can be. Keep safe, everyone!

kacklebird 10-23-2011 08:35 AM

Oh no, that's just terrible. I'm sorry you've lost all of your things too. ughhh Thanks so much for sharing the info as I'm going to ditch my one cheapo cord that I use for my Christmas tree.

bluteddi 10-23-2011 08:49 AM

glad every one is safe...

we tend to get a mind set, " if they sell it , it must be safe".....

WONDERFUL IDEA PEGG!!! Count me in! If we all share a little... she will be restored to "quilting status" in no time!

Don't forget to put an estimate on your insurance claims for your fabric losses (every piece). It seems petty but this will all add up. Start making a list now while things are fresh in your memory. I had over $150 in spices in my kitchen (who knew), and a freezer full of beef that held value too. DO NOT sign off on anything without getting legal advice if you are the least bit unsure.

If you lost everything this will seem like a mountain TOO TALL to climb, but if you just get organized from the beginning it will save your sanity in the long run. I remember sitting in the Super 8 with my daughter and 92# dog...and it dawned on me I didn't even have a pencil to write with nor a piece of paper to write on. It was pretty dismal for awhile.

*Some TIPS*
Get a note book and put clear plastic sleeves in it. I got handed so many business cards from everyone I couldn't keep anyone straight after awhile. I had a second note book that I jotted down random thoughts in and dated them. That INCLUDES any and ALL phone conversations you have with anyone. Especially your insurance agents.

Mentally walk yourself through EVERY ROOM of your home and visualize what was in the dressers, closets etc. Even now.. allllll these years later I will go looking for something I KNOW I had..and can't find it... then it hits me.. Oh.. dang.. it went up in smoke. Some of these things I never claimed because I could not think straight.

If you want any more tips PM me...and I'll try to send you an outline of how I got organized and kept my head above water. My insurance company left me swinging in the wind for a year. It was the most unimaginable cruel experience ever.

My main "emotionally grounding" thought was reminding myself that there was NO LOSS OF LIFE...and that was my "rock" when I felt so very overwhelmed. We were very blessed in the long run. Not everyone is so lucky in a fire.

Good Luck!

Leota 10-23-2011 09:24 AM

When you get a chance take inventory/list what you lost or what was damaged and post it for us please.
This way we know what to send.

Thank-you for taking time to post this valuable message to all.

So sorry this happened. Thank goodness everyone is OK and you still have your house. But what a job to get it back together. Not to mention all the irreplaceable things you lost.

Thanks for the warning. Sometimes we take chances we're not even aware of.

ogama 10-23-2011 10:34 AM

prayers to you and yours. we also had a house fire and lost everything but our lives. thank our lord for that. mine was from a dryer hose that was too close to the outlet. it caught the lint on fire and wow there went the house. i have sense replace a lot of things but still refer to things as bf or af ( before the fire and after the fire. ) that was a few years back but will never forget it. I check all outlets and hoses every 6 months at least now. blessings to you and yours. ogama

Same here. Happy to share when you are ready (PM).

Glassquilt 10-23-2011 11:12 AM

Our house was not destroyed. I got to go in the smokey thing to do an inventory. Rather than write it all down while inside, I took pictures of everything. Opened drawers, closets, etc., spread the contents out, snapped a picture, pushed it aside and repeated over & over. SIL set me up with one of their computers and I just downloaded everything. I wrote my list in the comfort of their office.

I was able to use those pictures with the insurance and the restoration crew. I still have them for reference.

Sorry for your loss, I know from experience how difficult it is, but look at all the people you are helping right now!

HUGS! Sewcrafty!

That is sooo sweet of you, but I should weather this fine. Just breaks my heart that the QOV, 2 baby quilt tops, a watercolor top and my dh's Patriot's birthday pressie quilt that was almost done with quilting is all gone. Will replace everything else. The fabric didn't deserve that ending. My poor 6600 didn't either, but that's what we have insurance for.

Thank you for your wonderful advice. Started the inventory today and not sure, but around 100 -150 yards were destroyed give or take. :( But that's OK because I'll get new and have a whole closet and I mean chock full. I won't be sewing for a while, won't have the time. LOL

My house is a mess!!!! :D Don't have a place to play.

sewcrafty 10-23-2011 02:39 PM

I've been taking lots of pics. I've lost a lot, but we're all OK and my Sammy is fine. We're just very lucky, because we were getting ready to leave and go for a last camping trip. It could have been much much worse if this happened one day later. So I'm very thankful for that.

MostlyMaja 10-23-2011 02:42 PM

You are so right. The budget is not worth losing everything. I'm so sorry for you and hope you the best in getting thinks sorted out.
