Problem with flip top cans

Recently I have found leakage on the tops of 2 cans in my pantry that had flip tabs that you pulled to open - the can one was a soup and the other fruit. Of course I threw those cans away and checked the rest of the cans very carefully but tjey were OK. (Realized later that I should have kept the labels and sent them to the manufacturers with a letter of complaint) I usually stack just one can on top of another so I went changed it so only solid topped cans are on the bottom row and flip tabbed ones on top. As it is only DH and I now I don't buy in bulk or keep a packed pantry but I'll be checking all the cans each time I go into the pantry.
Anyone one else have this problem?

I have never had that problem, but I do have a problem getting them open. I always pull the ring off. My son laughs at me daily for it.

Another problem with cans lately is that they dent so easily. I make sure I don't choose dented cans but when I get them home every once in awhile I'll find a dented can. I bring them back to the supermarket on my next visit. Can sides are so much thinner now and just moving around in the plastic grocery bags does it. DH helps me with food shopping lately and he trys to pack the bags to keep this from happening. I wish we could go back to using paper bags because it is easier to line the items up inside of them and things tended to stay in place.

I haven't had the issue with the leaking cans. That's interesting.

Have you considered making your own sacks to take to the store? That might be nice, especially for those heavier items, and you could make them with a flat bottom to just the right size to pack cans in.

I have never had a problem with that either. I do try to take my own bags to the stores because many of the places here in Southern Cal are charging 5 cents a bag if you use the plastic bags. I am good with recycling the bags so prefer to take my own so I don't have to bother with recycling.

Good idea about bring my own bags to supermarket. I have plenty of them but don't always remember to bring them with me grocery shopping. Think I'll put a brown paper bag inside each of the cloth bags so items don't move around too much, that should solve the dented can problem. I get the brown papers when I shop at local fruit and veggie market, we fill them with junk mail for our recycling pickups. One of DH's teenage jobs was to pack grocery bags so he's good at it.

The metal in cans is getting pretty flimsy. What is with putting soup in cardboard/plastic packages too? I just don't trust them.

Sometimes I almost crush the plastic water bottles just try to open them. The plastic is much thinner or I'm much stronger. I think it is the plastic.

nivosum 08-18-2012 06:57 PM

I agree the plastic water bottles are getting thinner. Also the screw off top is getting smaller. I have trouble gripping when I am trying to open it. I stopped buying them.

You are lucky your DH is there to pack the bags. I take my own bags but have to watch like a hawk: they like to use the plastic bags first and then put them into my bags AND they put all the heavy stuff into one bag and the light stuff in one or several others. Maybe, I should start packing my own.

DH only began 'helping' me recently. I always did all the shopping, etc. but thought it was time for him to lend a hand. He's getting pretty good at finding bargins and is a big help getting all the bags into the car and into the house.

I agree about the thinner plastic bottles, almost squeezed a bottle of ice tea in half trying to get the cap off.

I opened a pop-top can of cat food in January, and it had mold all across the top. After e-mailing the comany 4 times and giving them the information and my address repeatedly, I still have not gotten any satisfaction. They said that they sent coupons two times. I never got them. I will not buy that brand again.

I've had sodas do that before, but not cans of food.

Stitchit123 08-20-2012 03:29 AM

I was told that when the pull top cans leak its because they are ' close' to expiration date, or they are kept in a too warm environment. When buying can goods I will look for a close to or empty box on the shelves.Who knew we'd have to start treating can goods like eggs.I buy soda for company and I'm yet to get a 12 pk home.I keep a waxed produce box with an old towel in it to keep that sticky mess contained.

DH just started as cashier for a supermarket. She was complimented on her bag packing skills. Told the cutomer that her mom was suing cloth bags before they were the thing. She's been packing them since she was about 7 - at least 15 years. Have been carrying cloth bags since before she was born.

Might I suggest making some Fabric bags with the plastic canvas inside the sides and bottom, you can tie it instead of quilting with a machine. Use a paper bag as a template and it should fold up the same way.

I think some container companies did studies to see just how thin they could make cans and bottles before they collapsed!

I hate those pull-off tops for soups and fruits. The cans are hard to rinse clean and I've cut myself on them more than once.

ptquilts 08-20-2012 09:13 AM

I don't trust those pull-off tops on soups and things like that. Always save the can if there is a problem, call the toll-free number for the company and you will get oodles of coupons.

Water bottles are thinner to reduce the amount of plastic waste that is building up in landfills or having to be recycled. Might want to consider a reusable water bottle and a filter pitcher.

Nope havent had any problems.

carolynjo 08-20-2012 12:03 PM

DH and I almost always pack our own homemade grocery bags. One boy at the grocery store told me he could get all my groceries in two of my bags (They are large). I told him just because he COULD didn't mean he should. I needed to carry them. He did it anyway, so I filed a complaint against him. We watch them like hawks now.

AuntieD 08-20-2012 01:26 PM

Thanks for the information. I never thought something like that would happen. Will be checking cans regularly.

ptquilts 08-20-2012 02:02 PM

when I go to Walmart, they seem to use one bag per item. No overpacking there.

Janice Thompson 08-20-2012 03:05 PM

Found cans at Wal-Mart that were leaking on display. I have a hard time opening them so try to avoid

ptquilts 08-21-2012 03:44 AM

while we are in the can department, what is with the cans that you can only open at one end? How am I supposed to crush them flat for recycling if I can't get both ends off?
