I pick M&M's over child birth. lol But I was silly enough to do it 3 times. Childbirth not M&M's I do M&M's every chance I get. Peanut for me .

Your skin and muscle is young and firm now. Think about how your TATS will look when you are " old".( when ever that is)

patsyo56721 08-13-2010 12:26 PM

Don't believe in tatoos

Dix 08-13-2010 01:03 PM

I retired from Ob/GYn office. We had a patient with a butterfly tattoed on her lower right quadrant. It was Ok untill she became pregnant, when the butterfly wings spread and oh my goodness, the stretch marks are not pretty on butterfly wings. lol

I guess I might be considered a prude, but I figure that if the Lord wanted us to have defaced bodies, he would have made us that way. Sorry ladies. Didn't mean to throw water on your enthusiasm. Two of my navy sons came home with very small anchors. I didn't say MUCH, but they knew I wasn't happy. Just venting my thoughts.

pookie ookie 08-13-2010 01:50 PM

My mom worked with old folks when I was a kid. Loved their tattoos. Or, really, I loved trying to figure out what they used to represent. The options were fewer for them (and easier for me to figure out for the most part). The old mil guys always had like four options chosen off a wall. "Is that a panther/ship/anchor/hula chick?"

The best work I've ever seen is a pet memorial portrait. Just beautiful. Three dogs. The worst was a knitting project by a guy with minimal skills.

My bf has a tat he wants to cover. I'll suggest something quilty just to watch him blanch.

My DD has a hula chick. Its Lulu. It is a copy of her grandfathers. Her father and half brother have Lulu too. It is a tribute to a wonderful man. As you can see in the photo he is a proud as a grandfather could be.
Dads was done back in the day in Hawaii. We are pretty sure it was done by Sailor Jerry.

Not too long ago we attended a motorcycle ,"run for breath", for Cystic Fibrosis. Several of the parents and friends had a nice tat done with the Run for Breath logo on it. It is a lasting tribute to the young children and young adults who lose their fight to C.F. I, being a Gramma of a C.F.grandson, am too chicken to do it.

CarrieAnne 08-13-2010 05:15 PM

Damaquilts, thats a neat picture with your DD and her Grandpa!!!!!!!

Hi, I am thinking about getting another tatto. I have several. Some big, some small, but all mean something to me.

I was wondering if anyone here has any they would like to share? AND does anyone have any ideas for me to get one? i have too many I would like and can't make up my mind. Some outside opinions would really be great/

I have a small tattoo on my shoulder. It's a Sumerian symbol of femininity-- I thought it looked celtic when I found it on an artifact but it was middle eastern and ancient. I can take a pic tomorrow when the light is better.

Have you seen the beautiful feather tattoos on the arms of the wonderful longarm quilter Karen McTavish? >>>

damaquilts 08-13-2010 05:53 PM

They are great. After I saw hers a while back was when I started thinking about getting one quilt related. I would like the feathers as a bracelet.

Margie 08-13-2010 06:14 PM

SIGH....I just dont get tatoos??? I dont mean to be rude, but I think skin is beautiful just the way it is and tatoos "junk" it up. To each his own, I guess I am old and dont think they are pretty...must be missing something that everyone else sees.

Sewmarty 08-13-2010 09:26 PM

Use your artistic bent to do beautiful quilt designs..tatoos look like someone hit you...they are NOT lovely..........

damaquilts 08-14-2010 03:09 AM

Like it was said before. To each his own. If you don't like it don't get it done. (shrug)
I happen to think my daughters tattoo's are beautiful. I don't like everyones tattoo's and some are just badly done.I don't like skeleton tattoos. Isn't it nice that there are so many different things for people to like? Imagine how boring quilts would be if they were all the same design and gray.
Tattooing is a very old art form. Possibly even before quilting came about.

I love your daughters and her g'fathers tattoos - what a lovely tribute to him and his life. I think his is the better art tho' :) but your daughter is prettier than him :).

damaquilts 08-14-2010 03:33 AM

He was nicer than she LOL
Yeah she had just gotten her's done in this picture and the guy who did it did it free hand. Once it settled down it's not half bad. I need to get the picture of her and her brother and father.
Her other tattoo's don't show in this picture. She has a bunch . She has a daisy for me and a piston for her dad on her chest. She has the Social Distortion skeleton from the Mommy's little monster album. For her daughter on her arm

Rainy Day 08-14-2010 03:42 AM

I want to get a pink ribbon for my mum and BGF

patsyo56721 08-14-2010 04:10 AM

Marge L. I agree with you whole heartedly..... I do have my ears pierced but only 1 time. Not three or four like some do.

I was always afraid of what 'shape' they would be in when I was old and saggy!

I agree wholheartedly. Tattoos are just an extension of the natural human trait to adorn the body. Some people like them; some don't. It would be a bland world if we all had to wear the same haircut, same makeup, same clothing, same jewelry.

Just speaking from personal experience, but can't say stretch marks are pretty anywhere. LOL

damaquilts 08-14-2010 07:13 AM

None of mine are. lol

I would have to agree, all of mine look good, and have no problem with them. However I waited until I was done having children to get tattooed! I also watch my weight, as I don't want to get out of shape or larger than I already am!

damaquilts 08-14-2010 02:45 PM

I have mine I my upper right chest and a small heart in the same place on the left and one on the back of my neck. I also got mine long after I got children when I already had really ugly stretch marks. No one sees the stretch marks ever Except my two surgeons and all the people in the operating rooms. And since they weren't worried about my belly button being moved 2 or 3 inches to the right I don't think I will worry about any of it. LOL

I like to call the "love marks" on my tummy "the Road Map to China" LOL

First pick is the bunny. I would suggest if you plan on having kids, don't get one anywhere near your tummy. LOL

The second is an angel about 9 inches tall. I have it on my back left shoulder. This is in memory of our daughter Jordan who passed away at 3 months from SIDS.
I have 10 all together. My daughter, Anne, and I have a small matching butterfly on our left hips. Got them for her 15 birthday. Thought my sis was gonna have a stroke! LOL

And yup, dif strokes for dif folks. I'm not offended when someone politely expresses their distaste for tattoos. To each his own. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. Keeps us honest.

:)

Awww, yes, the infamous Bunny :)

I have one (4 1/2 inches diameter) of a woman sitting on the moon between my shoulder blades, and a beautiful dragonfly on my left foot up near my toes...(one of my closest friends from high school - which was a loooooooooooong time ago - and I got our matching dragonflies together.

damaquilts 08-14-2010 06:05 PM

knlsmith Your angel is sweet. so sorry about Jordan.

Maksi 08-15-2010 10:44 AM

My DH would be very mad if I came home with a tattoo otherwise I maybe had a small one. I like the feet!

henryparrish76 08-15-2010 10:50 AM

I have thought about getting a friendship star block on my back. I have 3 other tats... my zodiac sign on my left arm, Egyptian ankh on my right arm and a dragon on my back.

sewnsewer2 08-15-2010 11:05 AM

No tatoos for me, I'm scared of needles! I prick myself enough sewing, wouldn't want to do it on purpose.

dljennings 08-17-2010 05:36 PM

years ago we had a neighbor who had been stationed on the uss arizona. he was on shore leave on 12/7/41. after the war, he had a full side view of the ship tatooed across his chest. shortly after we met him (he was in his late 60s) he needed open heart surgery. he refused to have it unless there was a plastic surgeon in the operating room, because he refused to have the surgery he needed unless his ship would be put back "to rights"

they got him a plastic surgeon. he lived another 15 yrs.. and the ship was right.

knlsmith 08-17-2010 06:33 PM

Dljennings : what a great story!!

Well, as quilters we can save a photo piece of fabric, so I don't think that it is too unrealistic that a plastic surgeon not be able to do the same. Skin is much more stretchy than 100% cotton!

AlienQuilter 08-20-2010 04:31 AM

I'd get one, but I'm afraid of getting bored with it and wanting to change it every couple of years!

I don't see tattoos being any different than piercing the ears for earrings. Although, I don't recommend getting the tongue pierced! Just ask your dentist for some horror stories!

Just had a thought. Tattoos are a way a "guy" can wear "bling" without being feminine!

Linda1 08-20-2010 05:09 AM

Marge I'm with you. I am 64 now and I wonder what tattoos would look like at my age if I had gotten them when my skin was firm. LOL

redkimba 08-20-2010 05:44 AM

for right now, henna is the closest I will get to a tattoo.

I have thought about going to a salon for that. I have one of those Middle-Eastern/Muslim salons who will do that.

Henna is a great way to go if you aren't sure about the permanance of a regular tattoo.
