You're from the Big EZ? My DH's kin is from there, too... small world! Who dat?!?

Yes, ma'am!!! I was born and raised, in N.O.! Small world, indeed!

I sometimes took home an extra pack of crackers, too! :D They were always so interesting and we only had Saltines, at home (my grandma had Ritz, at her house. Yum!). It was always an adventure, trying the different crackers; that was probably my favorite part of the meal! LOL Were those tiny "crocks" made of white ceramic? I vaguely remember something like that . . . but was probably too busy stuffing myself with crackers and butter, to pay attention to much else.

Every once in a blue moon, we'd go to the French Quarter and get beignets and hot chocolate (my parents would get coffee). Mmmmmm! I remember having to put on a dress, to take the bus to Canal St., to shop with my mom. Seems funny now, how people dressed up, to go shopping! :)

Could be. LOL I'm okay with licking an ice cream cone or snowball, after someone else . . . but it just grosses me out, to see someone else's spit, on my sandwich. Ewwww!

since I just LOVE butter, I can remember those little pats with the waxed paper from first grade.
We'd get them with real, hot, fluffly yeast rolls on our lunch tray and I thought they were so cute and I was one happy little mouse :)
I'd never been away from the rat's nest and experienced real joy before :D

My life started when i got married, lol, so I'm not that old, really ;)
You'd never equate dressing up and shopping once you've seen the people in Wal-M...not a snobby mouse, but sometimes I get so embarrassed for some of them!
I guess that's why there is a whole website dedicated to them.
I always loved the little packets of crackers too.
Like I said, never saw any till dh took me out, once in a blue moon.
(tee hee hee, we must have been visiting the same neighborhood...'blue moon'...
beignets...sounds really interesting and super yummy, whatever it is :p
Your mom really dressed you up and took you shopping with her? wow...

LOL Sorry, Mousie! Okay, picture this - French Quarter Beignets. Little squares of fried heaven-on-earth, covered with powdered sugar. They were hand-cut squares, probably about 3" - 4" across (sometimes more rectangular shaped), slightly sweet, tender, puffy bread . . . just completely covered, with white confectioners' sugar. Pair that with a cup of coffee (or hot cocoa, for non-coffee drinkers). Take a bite. Inhale the aroma of the coffee. Close your eyes and savor the moment. Hear the cooing of pigeons and the distant murmuring of fellow diners. Another bite of beignet. Another sip of coffee. Nothing else matters.

:)

I do this, too!
I also count - like when I'm eating grapes or M&Ms- I have to have an even number. If I have an odd number I have to bite one in half so I'll have 2 pieces (back to an even number!) I have no idea why I do this. Thankfully, I can do this in my head so no one knows about it. :o

I have to have all canned goods in groups, ie; all fruits together, all beans, all tomatoes and sauce, canned milk, etc., same in spice cabinet and they all must be facing where I can read the labels. I am also an "over" the spindle for toilet paper and paper towels. Drives my family nuts!!

Yes, but it's so much more pleasant to cook when you don't have a mess to work around. I have the same pet peeve.

After I use a washcloth, I must thoroughly rinse it, then wring it out until it's practically dry, before hanging it over the side of the tub (to dry until I gather laundry). It drives me crazy, to pick up a washcloth, that someone has wadded up, soaking wet, and left in the corner of the tub!

Of all the places she'd gone to the world over, NO was my Mother's favorite place on earth... hands down! Her & my Dad took the train down every spring & spent a week. Her first stop? Someplace to get beignets (which she learned to make & would make for me... yum!)! Her second stop? To hear Al Hirt! Me? I'd have found a crawfish boil!!!

And yes, the little crocks were white ceramic or porcelain or something. And were ice cold.

I remember dressing up (& my mom having on gloves & a hat even!) to go shopping. Then we'd go have lunch at the Tea Room & I felt soooooo grown up!!!

You & me both! DH washed some dishes today & when I went in the kitchen, what was wadded up, soaking wet in the sink? The dishrag! I had to rinse it (for like 4785 hours) & wring it (I pretended it was his neck) & then hang it on the towel rack in the bathroom. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Strange as it probably sounds, I can't stand even the thought of crawfish! BLAH! Probably because I watched my dad and uncles eat them, when I was a child. Will spare others the details . . . but I'm sure you know to what I'm referring. Just totally grossed me out.

My aunt used to work at McCrory's (on Canal) and was in charge of making the candied apples. She'd always set aside a few of the best ones, for us. She had her own "secret" recipe, for the red candy on them. Refused to share it with any of the other workers, so she was THE candied apple person. :D

I've never had this problem bc dh was trained very well in the navy about all kinds of things, but I had to teach our kids to wring out the dishcloth and drape it to dry.
Nothing worse than a sour dishcloth and I see them wadded up on ppl's sinks and just cringe

You got to go to a Tea room as a little girl and was all gussied up etc....how charming :)
I'd have loved to do this with my dd's or now with my dgd.
I have one that is "a little lady" and would get such delight about getting to be all prim and proper.
Me, on the other hand,...I'd have to wing it. I can be such a klutz at times

Even my daughter knew what a beignet was!
Where have I been?

LynnVT 08-13-2012 04:59 PM

Oh, my goodness, the way this thread has evolved is fascinating! Now I'd better see if I can get a discount flight to New Orleans! Does it ruin the 'puter if you drool on the keys?

Pam H 08-13-2012 05:06 PM

I'm thinking I need to make a trip to New Orleans too. I've never been there but have always wanted to go.

Neesie 08-13-2012 07:34 PM

The New Orleans, we knew, is long gone. :( Still I think you can still get beignets, in different sections of the city. There used to even be a mix, so that you could make your own. :)

Now, should we or should we not talk about the pralines? :D

Farm Quilter 08-13-2012 11:00 PM

I hang my laundry on the line (it is like an upside down umbrella) with the underwear on the inside and hidden from anyone driving by with other clothing. I fold or hang everything as I take it off the line and DH’s stuff on one side, mine on the other. I have a dishwasher that I haven’t used in the 7 years I’ve lived here and I hate other people doing my dishes – they don’t know how to stack it in the dish drainer to maximize the space! I have to make my bed as soon as I get up. If I, by some weird chance, get up and leave before my DH gets up (and he usually doesn’t make the bed), I have to make the bed before I get in it at night. I hate it when my DH cleans out his shaver into the sink and doesn’t clean the sink. I cannot sleep if the closet door is open. I can’t go to sleep without the television on. I don’t like my bedroom door closed when I go to sleep. TP comes off the bottom…otherwise the cat gets all the TP. My DD can’t be bothered to put the roll back on the spindle, just puts it on the counter – drives me nuts and I always put it back on the spindle for her! I count steps…not just stairs, but steps from point A to point B…no clue why! I cannot have my cupboard doors open and I will close other peoples! My mom would always leave cupboard doors open and I always managed to hit my head – safety issue!!! My DH drinks coffee and I prefer tea…and I refuse to use a cup that has had coffee in it because I can still taste the coffee…blech! I absolutely hate whistling – it is always slightly off-pitch and is like fingernails on the blackboard to me. AARRRGGGGGHHH! I let DH hear 3 seconds of Private Eyes and he could tell me who sang it and the name of the song…that’s weird!! Oh, I have the mix for beignets in the freezer!!!

What is really weird is that I had to create this "list" as a word document as I read all 43 pages of posts! Y'all kept reminding of the weird...er, um, quirky habits I have!

My husband doesn't rinse out the razor and it drives me NUTS! I've asked him repeatedly but he just doesn't think about it. So I have 2 razor refills in the tub; one for him and one hidden behind the shampoo for me. When I get in the shower I put in a blade from MY refill, and when I'm done I swap them back.

I HAVE to have my bedroom door closed when I sleep. My grandfather was a fireman and we were taught that a closed door would give you a few precious minutes if you needed to escape a fire, whereas an open door would allow smoke in and you could perish before you ever awoke. Of course, we have smoke alarms now, but I still want an extra minute or two!

I agree with you, this could be another safety issue. I have a friend whose son climbed up on the counter to get something out of an upper cupboard, and while he was there his sister opened a lower cupboard and left it open. When he came down, he came down fast and ended up straddling the open cupboard door - hard. Poor little guy.

How about tea on Friday? About 4?

Boston1954 08-17-2012 05:27 AM

When I have corn on the cob, the pointy end has to be to the left. If Jim puts it on the plate facing the other way, I am compled to turn it around. And....get this.....I do not know WHY I do this.
