This is a followup to the quilt police thread. Some of you mentioned that you rate other people's quilts (silently).

Do you really? Why?

NO WAY! LOL, they'd always be higher than mine! I'm not great at it, I just really love to do it!

mpspeedy 05-21-2010 01:54 PM

I think the only rating I would do is if I would like to steal it or not.

ginnie6 05-21-2010 01:55 PM

yep I rate them! They're all better than mine!

saf45 05-21-2010 02:08 PM

im with ginnie6, there all better than mine, thats why i only make for my kids they think there perfect, lol

cjomomma 05-21-2010 02:09 PM

I agree they are all better than mine too. But I don't think I rate them. I think they all are beautiful. Everybody will always have a different take on what is good and what is not. But I figure if you took the time and created something then it is beautiful.

What amazes me more than anything is when someone posts a picture with the comment that THEY think it's the ugliest thing they've ever made, and yet, when I look at it, I love it! Bottom line, we don't need quilt police because we're our own worse critics!!

Since the beginning of creation there's always been competition/comparison.

Within the quilting field it's no different. We see our skills based on those around us, whether it be the board, a guild, a casual sewing group, family member. In this way, it's not always a bad thing, if we maintain the goal of learning for our own benefit, not at the expense of someone else.

What's the difference between the blue ribbon quilts at major shows to the efforts on display at the local guilds?

We're not all at the same skill levels and that's OK. What brings us together is the shared sentiments of the craft.

At least that's my take.

The only rating system I have is this:

1. Ok...I can do that.
2. Ok...I can maybe do that.
3. Oh Cripes! THAT'S outta my league!
4. ~Whimper~ I'll NEVER be THAT good!

;)

My rating system is simple. Someday I want to be that good, or someday I want to try to make that quilt. I don't always like other peoples color choices, but that's normal. I don't even always like the quilt pattern, but I still appreciate the work. All the pictures I've seen in here inspire me to try harder and do better.
