Read any good books lately?

I know that there was a wonderful thread regarding this topic in the "old" forum. I bookmarked it, but now can't find it :( I also tried to "search" but, no luck. So, sorry for the repeat, but I need a new author to read! I just finished the Benny Harper series by Earlene Fowler - loved it!!! I've read all of Joanne Fluke - Hanna Swenson series as well as Diane Mott Davidson. Anyone have any suggestions for another author - light read, mystery with a quilting twist? I have to go into the hospital on Friday and I'd sure like to load my kindle with a good read. Thank you!

Just read a book by "Debbie Macomber", easy read, she has written many, I just heard about her..
Help was a great book....

If you like light mysteries but it doesn't have to have a quilting theme, I like the Sue Grafton books...A is for Alibi, etc. She has a new book coming out soon...V is for Vendetta. The main character in them is a private investigator. Seems like they're set back in the 80's.

pdunn56 11-09-2011 05:25 PM

a great quilting series is by Jennifer Chiaverini The Elm Street Quilters here's link http://elmcreek.net/
also I have just finished reading every book Harlan Coben wrote...excellent!

EdieClay 11-09-2011 06:06 PM

I recommend ... got them all on my Kindle right now.
Kat Martin - series Against the Fire, Against the Law, Against the Wind - very good.
Susan Albert - series The Darling Dahlias
Lynette Eason - Women of Justice series

Stitchnripper 11-09-2011 06:09 PM

Breaking Night by Liz Murray - she is the formerly homeless girl who turned her life around (she was on Oprah) - great book about resilience. (Not fiction)

Girl in Translation by Jean Kwok - a young girl and her mother emigrate from China and the book details her struggles. It is fiction, but "informed" by the real life of the author.

AGREE!! The best I have read!

nativetexan 11-09-2011 07:30 PM

I'm reading The Forsyte Saga by John Galsworthy. It was a series on PBS and very good. nine books. set in 1800's to 1900's.

lynnsim 11-09-2011 08:05 PM

Have you tried any of these authors?
Monica Ferris
Laura Childs
M.C. Beaton

Murphy 11-09-2011 08:08 PM

I like books by Susan Wittig Albert; not quilting, but an herbalist (mysteries). Great reads. Give them a try.

LeslieFrost 11-09-2011 08:22 PM

I like the Alexander McCall Smith series that is set in Botswana. The main character is Ma Ramotswe, the first female detective in the country. They are light, but amusing, and Ma Ramotswe is very clever!

I recently read Bread, Bones and Butter, a memoir of a NYC female chef. I enjoyed it very much!

Hope your hospital stay goes well.

Well, I review books on the side so I've read some dandies (and quite a few not-so-dandy as well). I just read one called "Dream of Me" by Jennifer Froelich that I liked, "The Assassination of Governor Boggs" by Rod Miller if you like history, "Invisible Snow" by Quinn Barrett and "Haunted on Bourbon Street" by Deanna Chase if you like fun paranormal. Now I'll shut up.

Sew N Tune 11-10-2011 08:11 AM

I've been picking up many books in the sale bins at Books A Million for $3.97 ea. My latest find was Best Intentions, by Emily Listfield. Great author, and a very good story.

Krisb 11-10-2011 08:12 AM

Donna Andrew--funny as... Sharyn McCrumb, most set in Appalachia. M.C. Beaton, set In Scotland. None of these are about quilting, but they are all a quick read.

Karenn 11-10-2011 09:00 AM

Have you read any by Clare O'Donohue? I've read The Drunkard's Path, The Lover's Knot and am now reading The Double Cross. The author was a producer of HGTV's SIMPLY QUILTS. They're all quilts mystery stories. Thanks for asking because I was getting low on authors to check out. I hope these reading suggestions will help make your stay in the hospital enjoyable, if that's ever possible. Have a speedy recovery.

I have a kindle on my I-pad but don't use it because I don't want to buy the books. I did buy one book but what
do I do with it once I read it? My questions is do you get free books to put on your kindle and if so, where or how
I am such a novice at the computer or I-pad or anything new. Thanks for any suggestions or instructions.

Sandra-P 11-10-2011 02:27 PM

I just finished The Hangmans Daughter by Oliver Potzsch its a historical novel, may not be for everyone but I enjoyed it.

MinnieKat 11-10-2011 04:52 PM

I recommend the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich ... they're hilarious!! You'll laugh out loud! There are many times when I'm reading with my hand over my mouth so I don't make any noise. I'm smiling right now just thinking about them. :):):)

TexasSunshine 11-10-2011 05:18 PM

I'm reading a Sue Grafton book right now. Her books are good.

pdunn56 11-10-2011 05:33 PM

I subscribe to a newsletter that emails me at least once a day if not several times called free kindle books. Their website is
ereaderiq.com. The newsletter comes from this address , [email protected]
I have more free books for kindle than I'll be able to read in several lifetimes, about as many as I have quilting UFO's :-)
enjoy!

CraftyCarolyn 11-10-2011 06:24 PM

The Debbie Maccomber 'Blossom St' Series is great...
Marie Bostwick...great quilting series

Happy Reading!

I love Jennifer Crusie for a good light read--perfect beach read, not so sure about a hospital tho. There is also a knitting club series around. I remember reading one and enjoying it, but cannot remember the author.

Thanks for this thread--have noted a few authors I will check out.

katesnanna 11-10-2011 06:37 PM

I've just finished Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M Auel. I truly enjoyed every page of it. I've ordered the next two books in the series. Now I'm reading my favorite male author, John Grisham. Then it will be V is for Vendetta by Sue Grafton.

Sheila_H 11-10-2011 07:02 PM

Depends on what you like to read I love Tess Gerritsen she writes medical/murder mysteries out of 8 books so far I haven't gotten the suspect right yet (good thing I'm not a cop). The other's I like are James Patterson, Brad Thor & Vince Flynn (Brad & Vince - anti terrorism authors), Laurell Hamilton (vampire series), Robin Cook, Kathy Reich, Clive Cussler

I agree. I check out every new one as soon as it appears in the library.

Rann 11-12-2011 04:00 PM

Emilie Richards has some with a quilting theme.

You can get the free Overdrive app from the itunes store and then get free books from your library. They expire so when you are done they go away (sometimes you have to delete them, but they give you a prompt). You can even get audiobooks.

kdid82 11-12-2011 04:11 PM

I just finished one by Linda Howard - Prey, could hardly put it down.

vwquilting 11-12-2011 04:29 PM

I just finished Them Imortal life of Harriet Larks by Rebecca Skloot. It is about her cells and medical research on how we have medical break through from the Salk vaccine to cancer very easy read.
Also on the 3rd book from Adeline Yen Mah 1st The Chinese Cinderella 2 -Falling Leaves 3-Watching the Tree. Very interesting books I bought them on Alabris for .99 each.

aborning 11-12-2011 07:38 PM

Lately, I've been reading the books by Kristin Hannah. They are not Quilting related but are very good books.

plainpat 11-13-2011 03:19 AM

I download Kindle books on Amazon to read either on my MacBook...or iPad.Don't recall how to get rid of them, but know you can.

I have to second this recommendation! An absolutely wonderful series with great characters.

Although not quite a mystery, I just finished one of the best books that I've ever read. "Bear, Otter, and the Kid". Nearly kept me up all night because I couldn't bear to put it down.

Just finished the second in the trilogy by Suzanne Collins---"The Hunger Games". It is written for the teen crowd but I am finding it super good and worth reading.

plainpat 11-13-2011 01:31 PM

I must be the only one who doesn't read detective books. That's ok, I still pick up a good book now & then when ppl list favs.

Panchita 11-13-2011 01:58 PM

I've just recently (due to this board) discovered Marie Bostwick's 'Cobbled Court' series, which is quilting-related but not so much with the mystery/detective. And of course I am addicted to Jennifer Chiaverini's 'Elm Creek' series.

For the detective stuff I love Harlan Coben (the Myron Bolitar series), Robert Crais, and Michael Connelly (Harry Bosch). Also Sue Grafton, as someone mentioned, Patricia Cornwell and Linda Fairstein.

Janet Evanovich is a great choice if you prefer your humour first, and 'detecting' second :)

GingerJ 11-13-2011 02:44 PM

I like mysteries. the quilting mysteries are good. But I really recommend mysteries by Margaret Truman. She is former President Truman's daughter. A lot of her mysteries involve the "in" crowd in Washington , DC. She can write very believeable characters.
I have read all of the Elm Creek Quilt series. Liked them all, but especially the historical fiction.
I have read a few of the novels by Dan Brown.
I read the Harry Potter books too.

Iraxy 11-13-2011 03:17 PM

I love MC Beaton's series about the constable. It is funny and entertaining. Debbie McComber is great too. Kat Martin, Susan Wittig Albert, are good reads. I love JA Jance but that would be a little less lite than you want. I also read all the Tony Hillerman stories. They are pretty good but might not be lite enough for post surgical read.
I am reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo right now. I had read this series before but I wanted to read it slowly (the last time I was on a waiting list and there were people behind me that wanted to read it) and thoughtfully because it is an engrossing story. This book is definitely NOT reading lite. Hope your hospital stay is short and that all is well when they bail you out.

KwiltyKahy 11-13-2011 03:23 PM

Alices's Tulips (can't remember the author) Not a mystery but quilting related, good read.
