Remember $.27 Gas?

The clothesline thread made me take a trip down memory lane. I remember when gas was under $.30 a gallon and there would be price "wars."

QuiltingKrazy 03-09-2012 04:44 PM

Oh I remember! Me and my mom would go this corner on town that had three gas stations on the corners.
There would be the sandwiche type sign boards with gas prices! I remember 25 cents and 23 cents! Can you imagine that now? Heck I'd be happy with gas priced ten times 25 cents!

karenpatrick 03-09-2012 04:53 PM

Unfortunately, I am old enough to remember that. I could put $2 of gas in my car and drive all week.

sewsewquilter 03-09-2012 05:06 PM

yes, I remember. Dad liked when they were having price wars. :)

valleyquiltermo 03-09-2012 05:10 PM

I can remember in St. Louis, Missouri they had price wars and gas got to 10 cents a gal. Now that dates me I'm sure, LOL

Sunnye 03-09-2012 05:54 PM

Oh, yes! I would put 25 cents in my mom's big Chevy and head to my boyfriend's house 20 miles away. She never knew because the tank was at the same level. And oh yes, the price wars! Never see that anymore.

Glenda m 03-09-2012 06:36 PM

Remember that and Dad buying cigaretts for .19 cents a pack. He said he would quit if they got to be over .25. Then smokes got to .50 and you know the rest. Dad never did quit.

maryb119 03-09-2012 06:55 PM

I remember gas at 39 cents a gallon. I could fill up my mustang for $6.50!!!

amyjo 03-09-2012 07:53 PM

well now it cost me 48.70 to fill my car today --premium gas is 3.92 a gal. with a dime off if you pay cash. otherwise 4.02. reg and super unleaded are at 3.669 and 3.799 a gal and we are the THIRD largest oil producing state in the US now. we beat CA out according to the news our state produced over 16 million barrels in the month of January 2012. And where does all this oil go? Certainly not here. overseas. I would be tickled if we could get gas for $2.50 a gal. the .51 mileage just don't cut it.

Jingle 03-09-2012 08:32 PM

I can remember lots of things being cheaper than today. Remember also when wages were much lower than today also.

KarenSimon 03-09-2012 09:57 PM

I remember when it was 29 cents. When we had a sale it was 27 cents. But I made $1.60 an hour.

I remember 19 cents for gallon

Of course I do..., We were living in St. Louis, Mo in the early 1970's sometimes with the "Gas Wars" we paid 19 cents per gallon. We lived in the County and worked in the City ... so 19 center per gallon was very good for our young family. I also remember our wages were much lower. thanks for the memories...

Judy in Phx, AZ

PS Paid $4.09 per gallon today to fuel our VW TDI

Anael 03-10-2012 03:17 AM

You're lucky, today we have to pay $ 8.98 per gallon :( Tomorrow it will be more!

patricej 03-10-2012 04:12 AM

i can remember asking the attendant (you remember ... the guys who pumped our gas, checked our oil & radiator, tires and washed all the windows ... for no extra charge) why the gas had gone up to 28 cents. were they pumping liquid gold?

i guess it is now liquified diamonds.

CRELLA 03-10-2012 04:57 AM

I remember when they would have gas war an it was .15

NikkiLu 03-10-2012 05:44 AM

Yes, I do - I was a teenager in the 60's and my dad would give me and my sister $1.00 and we would get his car (a '55 Chevy) and put in a gallon or two of gas and go buy a pack of cigarettes for 25¢ and go "cruising" - seeing all of our friends at the various drive-in's - and actually have enough money to buy some french fries or hamburgers at McDonalds - then it was only a drive-in - there were no seats inside - you just had to use the walk-up window. My dad predicted that someday gas would cost $1 and a pound of hamburger would cost $1 and a loaf of bread would cost $1 and a pack of cigarettes would cost $1 - he has been dead for almost 40 years!!!

Ditto, at my first job my wage was $2.00/hour - minimum wage at the time (early 70's). Also a long distance call was like $3.00 for 3 minutes!!

Barbshobbies 03-10-2012 04:39 PM

My husband was chatting with a friend while filling up his truck, was he in shock when the bill was $81.50. I just heard on late night radio that with the government now buying gas on the stock market, like they were with the Gold, we could end
up paying $15.00 a gallon. Home is looking better every day.

Rubesgirl 03-10-2012 07:33 PM

I remember gas wars when I was in HS. .23-.24 a gallon. I'd put .50 in the tank of my 1964 Impala & go cruising with my GFs. Of course minimum wage was $1.25 and we were making .50/hr for babysitting. I also recall being completely insensed when it cost me $5.00 to fill up my Pinto in 1975! I laugh about it now, but it wasn't funny then! :-)

MissM 03-10-2012 07:40 PM

On top of that you didn't have to pump your own gas, plus the gas station attendant checked your oil and washed your windows.

jollyquilting 03-10-2012 08:08 PM

Unfortunatly I also remember when 50 cents would go a long, long way. 27 cents a gal. wow. What fun we had when we pooled our change to get gas to run on.

JanTx 03-10-2012 08:13 PM

I pulled into the SERVICE station once and asked for $5 worth of gas - just like my dad did. The guy stopped at less than that. When I told him I'd asked for $5 he said, "well, little lady, I can pour the rest of it on the ground, but your tank is full!".

Another time I scrounged in the bottom of my purse and pulled in with an EMPTY tank. Asked for 25 cents worth of gas - would have gotten almost a gallon. I panicked when the little numbers rolled past 25 cents and got out and told the man, "But I only have a quarter!" He stopped it at a gallon - maybe 28 - 32 cents and said, "Yep, and I only have daughters. This'll get you home."

Ah the good old days!

Moon Holiday 03-11-2012 05:02 AM

When put into perspective, we find: while in 1958 we were paying 25-cents per gallon for gas, our average income was under $4,000 per year, with home sales averaging at $12,500. Today, the average cost of gas is about $4, the average income is about $50,000 and the average home sells for about $264,000. I'd still rather live in today's world with today's prices and today's wonderful time savers (especially in regards to quilting).

marymay 03-11-2012 06:02 AM

I must be older the dirt. I can remember when gas was .21 and then came the gas wars. Bought gas for .17 a gal.

LOL - I'm so old I invented dirt - but I can remember 9 - 11 cents a gallon & inner tube tires - lol - & every well equipped glove box had a patch kit.

anita211 03-11-2012 06:25 AM

We all used to throw in a nickel or dime to go in the gas tank when I was in high school. We drove around all night. And gas was 29 cents a gallon. Man... I wish.

terri123 03-11-2012 06:49 AM

Gas is $4.29 a gal today in far No. California. :(

Roberta 03-11-2012 07:03 AM

I was upset when the price went up to 30 cents. I remember my Mom pulling into a station and asking for 5 gallons. Now it would cost close to $30 for what cost pennies.

Granny Quilter 03-11-2012 07:09 AM

I remember $0.25. I already had my 3 kids, and had a job as a public health nurse. $3.00 would fill my VW Bug and keep me going for a week!

Rann 03-11-2012 08:13 AM

What do you mean? I remember $.18 a gallon gas

kqqlme1147 03-11-2012 08:38 AM

I remember when gas was $.19 a gal and I had a VW bug and was being paid $.20 a mile on my job. I was making money. WOW!!! 40+ years ago. But this year I will retire and have more time to do my quilting.

KyKaren1949 03-11-2012 08:40 AM

OH yeah! The night I got married, March 29, 1969, we stopped for gas on our way out of town. It was 29 cents a gallon. That service station went out of business and stood empty for years with that 29 cent price on its marquee for a long long time. What memories!!! I worked at a grocery store then while I went to college. I remember some of the regular prices because we didn't scan anything then. Lettuce was 9 cents a head, bread was 19 cents a loaf, canned food was often 5 or 6 for a dollar. Amazing!

w7sue 03-11-2012 08:45 AM

I love this site, but hate trying to post to it - so many times the site quits responding, my post doesn't post and it is lost unless I can remember what I wrote --- that being said ...

I remember those low cost gas days too. When I was in high school we could put a few dollars worth of gas in the tank and drive around all Friday night - go to football games, cruise "the gut" and still return the car with more gas in it than there was when we left the driveway. Those were definitely "the good ole days"!

w7sue 03-11-2012 08:46 AM

Of course, now that I complained, the post went through ... go figure ...

My dad had price wars with a local refinery, but the gas we sold only every got down to 12 cents. The refinery wouldn't go lower than 13 cents!

cheryl rearick 03-11-2012 09:35 AM

I sure do remember when gas was 20 cents, my cousin and I could go all day in her sisters little car on 50 cents worth of gas what a blast. I was earning $4.00 an hour, now days a watress doesn't make much more than that but you sure pay more for the gas. so sad for our young and elderly in these days.

SUZAG 03-11-2012 10:01 AM

I remember in '73 when I got my first car, a Yellow Pinto, the gas was $.49 a gallon and I was going to be darned if I would pay a whole $.50 a gallon for gas! Oh, the good old days... Bought the Pinto new also, including tax and transfers for $2k...can't even get a junker for that now!

KatFish 03-11-2012 10:05 AM

I can remember paying $1.25/gal my Senior year of high school. We used to clean out the pop bottles in the back seat and cash them in to get the $5 for a half of tank of gas.

MadP 03-11-2012 10:23 AM

I remember 15 cents a gallon at Town Talk.
