My friends and I were remembering the fads we had in school - in the '50's , wearing those collars with two white fur balls hanging from them. Or the dog collar over your right sock if you were going steady or over your left sock if you were "available"
We also wore white lipstick, and a hairband plastered between your forehead and your hair - really unflattering. How about the rubber girdles and stockings that had pictures painted around the back of the ankle? |
And 'Penny Loafers" with a penny stuck in them. And those wide felt skirts with the poodles on them. I found one of my old pictures wearing one and it looked like I was slowly sinking into the ground. My GD howled with laughter at it, all the while her warm jacket was well above her waist and she kept pulling it down because she was cold!!
Then there was the "Boyfriend Sweater" that was miles too big and kept dripping in dinner plates when you went to your favorite cafe for cherry Cokes and a burger and fries. But you had to wear it to prove you had a boy friend but had to hide it so your mean old father wouldn't see it. (Not me, Grandma raised me and she was far more vicious than a junk yard dog where "those trashy boys" were concerned!!! |
I was only a little girl but the full crinoline pettycoats under the full gathered skirts where if you wiggled at all you russeled loudly and everyone would look to see who was skwerming
|
oH dEER MY FAVORITE WAS VANILLA COKES. tHE DANCE HALLS WERE FUN TOO.aMERICAN BANDSTAND LOVED dICK clARK. PEGED PANTS WERE A BIG THING TOO oH THE MEMORIES....
|
We also wore horsehair crinolines and special hoop slips to make those felt skirts stick out. Yup, the boys wore pegged pants and their hair was fashioned in a DA!
|
I graduated from high school in '86, so we wore leg warmers, jelly shoes and bracelets, BIG BIG BIG hair :-D , Members Only jackets, off-the-shoulder Flashdance shirts, Swatch watches, stirrup pants, etc.
Fun times! |
Was the BIG hair from rolling it over a concentrated OJ can?
We used to set our hair with rubber curlers that snapped on, and the curls were tiny and tight! Then we got rollers that had brushes in them, and you slept in them. Ugh! |
late 50's early 60's: Did anyone get those candy birthday corsages from their friends? the more corsages hanging off your chest, the more popular, obviously! I don't remember the exact representative candy, but age 16 was small sugar cubes, tied into the sweetheart roses... another year was lifesavers, another was lemondrops, etc... you get the picture.
|
And saddle shoes, then pink and black sweaters, skin tight skirts, mid-calf length skirts that "met" the pulled up bobby socks. Pony tails and bangs. "Twin set" sweaters. Scarfs like a cowboy type worn over the twin sets! And pin curling your hair with crossed bobby pins all over your head! I was a tom-boy but the "clique" decided to fix me all up. With my blue cat's eye glasses I didn't really turn any heads. Next day back to the jock that I was!
Thanks for the memories! |
I can remember the white lipstick and eye make-up. I also ironed my hair on the ironing board when it got too long for those oj cans!

I graduated the same year as Moonrise! The big hair was from HAIRSPRAY, I think! Aquanet....remember that stuff? Made your hair as hard as cardboard, lol!
|
Stirup pants bellbottoms and mohair wrapped around your boyfriends class ring.
|
I graduated in 1974, looking at the yearbook, 95% of the girls and 50% of the boys had long, straight hair parted in the middle. (mine was wavy, sorry).
|
Late 60's, we used to wear nylons (pantyhose hadn't reached the midwest yet) with white cotton sneakers. And you had to polish those sneakers with white shoepolish every night, which quickly rotted the cotton.
And remember when the Mary Quandt (?) fad came out and all the girls cut their hair short on one side and long on the other? And wore a-line dresses made of four big solid squares on the front (geometric look). Or, with the Beatles the latest craze, we all work black turtlenecks for awhile. |
HaHaHaHa - those are sooo funny
BUT remember we all had to WALK TO SCHOOL - BOTH WAYS - IN THE COLD AND SNOW - UP HILLS - BOTH WAYS!!!! No bus service for us. - Luckily when we got to 2nd year of high school kids started driving! |
Yes we walked and walked home for lunch! I lived a mile from School and it WAS uphill. We also walked in the rain! now they pick the kids up on nearly every corner! No driving except a couple times in my senior year Mom let me take the car.
|
I graduatedin '68. I remember not being able to wear jeans to school -- HAD to wear skirts or dresses and they could not be more than 3" above the knee! GRANNY GOWNS!!!!!!! Yes, those were dresses that went all the way to the floor! One fad I remember that I can't figure out yet why was wearing our jackets off our shoulders, more like a shawl. ugh! And "closed campus" -- we couldn't leave the school grounds during the lunch hour.....
|
'74. In northeast Iowa. We had to wear dresses. It was cold standing by the highway waiting for the school bus. By the time I was in highschool we could wear pants as long as they weren't jeans.
We shared a locker with one other person and no one had locks. I don't remember anyone having anything stolen either. |

I was born to late. Sounds like a fun time to me. I was born in the 60's so I didn't have a much fun. Great stories.
|
You all got me to remembering also. Do you remember when you were in grade school and we could only wear pants under our dresses until we got to school and then had to take them off while in school? And that was only when it was freezing outside.Girls did not wear pants back then. To think what they wear to school now.
|
We had to wear dresses too until they changed the rule in my senior year but no jeans! When Mini skirts were in they had to touch the floor when we were on our knees.
|
Anyone remember the year of the "wig hat"? It was a winter hat that looked like a pixie hairdo, and you would fiddle with it until it looked like your hair with all little wisps coming down on your face- that might have been from the early 60's.

I was a child of the 70's and 80's - I remeber rainbow shirts, combs in our back pocket, feathered hair (Farrah Fawcett hair), candies shoes, shoulder pads. We thought we were so cool then....
|
I was in Jr. High in the late 60's and high school in the early 70's. I remeber the Beatles and how their haircuts and Rock and Roll music would be the "ruination" of today's youth! We wore mini skirts to school everyday because girls were not allowed to wear pants. The cold Iowa winters seemed even colder but we wore textured stockings with garter belts under them so it helped a little. When we finally got to wear pants to school, we wore bell bottoms and body suits that snapped in the crotch. Hair was long and parted in the middle for both boys and girls. Some of the senior pictures of my class, the boys had longer hair than the girls! What memories!

Thanks for the memories! Kitsie, your memories really brought back mine! I well remember wearing my brothers sweater, pale blue, with a black tight skirt and the saddle shoes and socks pulled up to meet the skirt. My gosh!! I must have looked so silly!! Also wore levis so tight I had to lay on the floor to button them, and my dad or brothers shirts tied in a knot in front Now that was cool!! Once in awhile I managed to get out of the house with brothers favorite shirt before he grabbed it .LOL |
We wore the tight skirts with ballet type shoes and stockings, with a button down sweater backwards and a long pendant which accentuated your boyfriends ring which was hanging around your neck. We also wore the plastic collar with the two grommets and a silk scarf through it.
We used to send a "slam book" all around the class, during class. It had a list of questions and each of your friends answered the questions and then folded it over so that no one could see their answers. (wink, wink) |
I remember really full skirts and the straight skirts. What about the sac dress? Lord they were ugly!!
We couldn't wear pants in school, wore saddle shoes and bobby sox. Girls wore head scarves. I remember the crinolines and the sound they made when you walked! Does anybody remember the spoolies they came out with to curl your hair? What about the Toni perms? The cool boys wore tee shirts and pegged levis and had Fonzy duck tails.  |

I remember getting "a perm" which meant that my hair was put in metal curlers that were attached to something in the ceiling and the beautician pulled a lever and fried my hair. I'll admit it was curly, but the fried ends kept breaking off even while my aunts kept bragging on how pretty it was. They were brushing burnt hairs off their own shoulders at the same time from their "perms." I think this was in the mid 1940s or so. Maybe a trifle earlier. I do know that I was in my 40s before I ever dared to get another "perm."

Those were the days of fun and no cares.
My grade school and high school always allowed pants. My high school was located 2 blocks from the beach. During spring exams everyone would go to the beach during break time. We had one exam in the morning and another after lunch. I did marry my high school boyfriend. After almost 47 years of marriage he is still my love. |
I never went into those "fads". I wore Levi's and t-shirts. On occasion I wore more girly attire. I had an old sweater I absolutely loved, my Gram knitted it for me. It was a size or two big for me, but Gram made it and I loved it so.
