i remember when......Sunday dinner took up the whole day...... i can still smell those smells comin' from the kitchen, pies baking ....and a trip to grandmas was fun...when a soda fountain was a PLACE. Where it was safe to walk to school and walk home all in the same day! and a time when ladies wouldn't dare enter church without hats AND gloves....let alone where pants!

marsye 04-27-2010 02:41 PM

things have really changed but I still have old fashioned values.

dsb38327 04-27-2010 02:43 PM

Yes, I do remember but it doesn't seem like it was yesterday. It seems like it was a long, long time ago.

Up North 04-27-2010 03:22 PM

and everyone got a new outfit for Easter including a purse, gloves and hat to match.

Marjpf 04-27-2010 03:24 PM

I remember dressing up to go downtown shopping, or on an airplane.

LUV2QLT 04-27-2010 03:40 PM

I remember when girls had to wear dresses to school - and they had to cover the knees! And on gym day, we had to wear shorts under the dresses!

Up North 04-27-2010 03:45 PM

WE had to always wear dresses too. ( This was the late 60's early 70's and they and to touch the floor when you got on your knees) but we had ugly blue gym uniforms we had to wear!

amma 04-27-2010 04:21 PM

Those WERE the days :D:D:D

trupeach1 04-27-2010 04:32 PM

And........

you didn't wear white after labor day.

pasta was called spaghetti

the phone was hung on the wall in the kitchen

all the stores were closed on Sunday, even gas stations.

you didn't pay for TV

there were drive in movies

you heated your food on the stove or oven

I could go on and on!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the good old days!!!!!!

marsye 04-27-2010 04:34 PM

Oh how I miss the drive in movies!!!!!!

Up North 04-27-2010 04:45 PM

marsye your Avatar is cracking me up. it looks like the lady that lived next door when I was a kid that always had a cigarette hanging out of her mouth!

JJs 04-27-2010 04:46 PM

hmmmm....

I remember being able to ride a bike all over the place without worrying (the thought never entered your mind) about being snatched by a wierdo..

I remember living in a time when kids did not sass anybody or mouth off or argue with anybody passing by

I remember when if you didn't have the money to buy something you didn't buy it

I remember when you had two skirts, three blouses and two dresses to wear to school... and your boobs and/or belly and butt cleavage didn't hang out

I remember when EVERYBODY had to go out and play at recess and EVERYBODY had to take PE and the girls took home ec and you actually HAD TO learn stuff in order to be passed from one grade to the next - none of this "you did your best - lets not hurt your poor little feelings" crap .. Probably why we have so many killings now - people get out in the world and guess what? the world doesn't revolve around them and guess what else? the world doesn't give a sh** about your tender feelings....

geez I could go on forever...

Up to her very old age my grandmother went to church wearing the lace veil to cover her head. She made me wear a small red round one but she wore a long black one that came down the sides. I looked forward to grow up and wear the long one myself and then they stopped wearing them.

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 04-27-2010 05:04 PM

You all don't have drive-in movies anymore?? We have one. $2 a person double feature every weekend all summer. Everyone takes the kids in their jammies so they'll be ready for bed when you get home.

Remember party lines?

Blue Bell 04-27-2010 05:27 PM

Remember listening to THE SHADOW KNOWS on the radio on Sunday nights?

Did we go to school together? I also remember that no one sat down at a meal before my dad and you better not touch anything before grace was said. Also, you never wore white shoes before Memorial day or after Labor Day.

Honey 04-27-2010 05:41 PM

Nothing was better than a Sunday baseball game on the radio and looking in the back of the radio to try to see the little guys in there!! I don't think I ever went on a date wearing jeans. Always a skirt or dress (once in a while coulottes) with nylons.

Lneal 04-27-2010 06:43 PM

I remember when the outhouse was the only toilet available!!

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 04-27-2010 07:11 PM

My Mamaw had an outhouse. I hated that thing with a passion.

Mine still do (when I make a "Sunday dinner" that is).

sharon b 04-27-2010 08:22 PM

Kids could be out past dark and you didn't have to worry

we played - Kick the can, ditchem , baseball , no video games and parents didn't have to entertain us

corpral punishment was alive and well in schools

school started after Labor Day and was done the first week of June, and you didn't have 2-4 days off a month for teachers in-service

when you wanted to visit with a friend you went to their house

Born2Sew 04-27-2010 08:34 PM

I remember when .15 would buy a soda pop and a hershey bar..
Cars that didn't have seat belts, and lucky if they had a radio...black and white tv

Gramof6 04-27-2010 10:10 PM

And the day our first television was delivered. The first show I ever watched on tv was a shoot-em-up Western. Grew to love the Lone Ranger, the Cisco Kid, and SuperMan.

Speaking of soda fountains, my brother and I would walk a mile and a half for a nickel cherry coke, just to have something to do, then walk back home. A 3-Musketeers bar was only a nickel too, and it was big enough to share with a friend.

Gasoline was 39 cents a gallon, and every once in awhile there would be a gas war when my Dad could get gasoline for 19 cents a gallon.

CarrieAnne 04-28-2010 03:57 AM

Remember when there were no VCr's, or computers? Kids always say I lived in the OLD DAYS, and I am 42! YEESH!

We still have a drive in movie theatre too, course only in the Summer!

sew_lulu 04-28-2010 04:09 AM

I still have the phone hanging on the wall in the kitchen. We hardly use it but it's there.

Party lines (4) on our phone,
10 minute limit on phone use because my Dad was fire chief and had to have access to the phone in case of fire, even though we could hear the siren from our house.

Ugly green gym outfit,
Dresses to school although they were short and shorter, then longer

b/w TV and only three channels and ALWAYS having something to watch

Three pair of shoes - school, gym sneakers, and church shoes.

renee765 04-28-2010 05:32 AM

I remember, when we wanted a drink of water, we'd actually take it from the kitchen faucet - horrors!

SherriB 04-28-2010 05:44 AM

Cartoons were only on Saturdays, and only on util 12 noon. My youngest DD just could not imagine how I managed!! I still remember the look of horror on her little face. LOL!!

Manual typewriters were what I learned to type on. And if you made a mistake, it was a pain to fix.

I may be young, but all of this sounds ideal! I beg my mom and grandma to tell me about their lives growing up back then. I think I was born in the wrong time period...

Charlee 04-28-2010 06:57 AM

Playing outside for hours by yourself with not a toy of any kind in sight...and being happy doing it?

When if you got in trouble at school, the principal was within his rights to paddle your bottom, and then you got it again when you got home! Same thing applied to the neighbors...(Isn't it amazing that we not only survived "being hit!" by the adults in our lives, but we actually came out of it being relatively productive adults?)

Ah....the days...sure do miss them!

sharon b 04-28-2010 08:29 AM

Do you remember the first "remote controls" the cables that ran from the TVs/VCRs across the floor  Of course before that "us kids" were the remote ! LOL

I still have a TV that has the "clicker " knob  works great but won't hook up to cable

just_the_scraps_m'am 04-28-2010 11:15 AM

i remember staying out late when it was dark & catching those fireflies in a jar! and sitting on the porch swing just listenin' to the wind blow the leaves together in those big ol' maple trees......

trupeach1 04-28-2010 11:34 AM

Do you remember the plastic film with a rainbow of colors that went on top of the TV screen. You had color TV but the face might be blue or red depending on where on the screen the face and color were. Did I explain that correctly????????????
