When I made mine years ago it seems that I made them completely individual. One with right sides together and one with wrong sides together and then inserted one into the other and sewed around the top and added a handle to them made from either a coordinating fabric or webbing strap.

yep, much better idea. that top sewing of the handle was not fun. but then i did the way the pattern said but had reversible in mind. my fault. still, got it done.
