Robocall scam

https://www.msn.com/en-us/video/scie...ney/vi-AAB2DFn
Saw this this morning. I do not know anyone who has been caught, and I do not call unknown numbers back. My overseas people would have all of the numbers to reach us. But a warning to be careful of overseas calls.

Happy Day
Susan

Speaking of these hateful robocalls, I had several lately that say they are from Social Security Adm and if I don't call them back right away, they will cancel my SS card!! What a hoot! But, somebody may become nervous and call them... so let's keep everybody safe from this one.

lberna 05-09-2019 05:58 AM

I absolutely refuse to answer a call from someone who is not in my contact list. If it is important, he/she will leave a voicemail and I will call right back.

leonf 05-09-2019 06:36 AM

So sad that phones and computers have to be used so defensivley.

NoraB 05-09-2019 07:23 AM

We don't have caller ID on our home phone (just don't want to pay additional). Now, we've started just letting the answering machine take the call. Most times, there is no "message", so I know it's scammers, etc. Such a shame that we are disturbed in our home with unwanted interruptions and solicitations. Once you turn 65, the calls increase with all the offers of "the back brace you ordered", "you or someone in your household is suffering from chronic pain", "You pay alot of money for your PC and the technical support you have not used", "your IP address has been compromised, please call immediately", "Your SSN is going to be cancelled unless you call imediately", etc. Yesterday, the recording actually told me "don't hang up"! ! ! Now, we are getting orders from strangers!?!? Of course, I hung up! All I want to do is sew and not have to listen to that phone ring with yet another interruption! Seems like if those poor folks whose job it is to "work" at these scams would turn their talents and efforts to something meaningful, we'd all be better off. (Good, now my weekly venting is completed)! Have a good sewing day everyone!

I had a call last week from "Publisher's Clearing House- I did a reverse search on the number...it came from outside the U.S. I hung up on the guy, but wish I'd stayed connected long enough to learn what the scam was.

Juliebelle 05-09-2019 12:55 PM

We do not have a land line anymore we just use our cell phones, both husband and I keep our phone on do not disturb and if you are not in our contacts you will not get thru. Best move we ever made. It is amazing how many scam calls come thru as local numbers now. I figure if they don’t leave a message it is not important.

Jingle 05-09-2019 03:14 PM

Only a very few people we know could be calling us. Their name and number will show up on caller I.D. I pick up the phone and hang it back up.

If the answering machine answers the call then they will keep calling. As they know it is a working number.

When I bought the phone years ago it came with those two options. We don't pay for either one.

SusieQOH 05-09-2019 03:42 PM

I kept getting calls from Australia. I never answered but it showed on my phone. Australia?? :)

I remember when we got rid of our land line and cell phones didn't have the annoying calls. Those were the days!

Mary Christine 05-10-2019 06:45 AM

Amen to that!

My phone has call blocking on it so I have mostly eliminated most of those nasty type calls. And I LOVE the ones that say "you are getting this call (usually for a back or knee brace) because someone at this number requested the information". I think not! I am the only 'someone' at this number and I didn't request it.

Bueniebabe 05-11-2019 01:05 AM

2 days in a row I had 24 calls both days. Today I got one they are going to get in my bank account. My bank just beefed up all their stuff. It would scare a older person. I just hate the phone ringing so much. I never pick it up when I don't know the number or someone talks if I want to talk to them. I called the phone company. All they could tell me was press star 2 0 star and hold it down.

luvstoquilt 05-11-2019 04:28 AM

Leonf, you are so right! I have complained for many years. It is my phone and I pay the bill. What right do they have to call and disturb me? Personally, I think the phone company could stop it. Why were we able to have cell phones that weren’t bothered for so long and why has that suddenly changed?

SusieQOH 05-11-2019 04:50 AM

We can laugh about these idiot calls but I do worry about older folks. Wish they would all just find a new line of work!

crafty pat 05-11-2019 11:25 AM

We get up to 16 calls on Monday and Tuesday. I will not answer any number I don't know who is calling.

They are idiot calls. But, we are "older folks" and don't answer either! Just today Mr. Stitchnripper's phone rang twice while we were out. Didn't recognize callers so just didn't answer. He pushed the button to stop the call.

carolynjo 05-12-2019 07:04 AM

I, took, get robo calls. I answer and then lay the phone down and let them talk on their own nickle. Most do not call back..

SusieQOH 05-13-2019 04:32 AM

I got a call the other day from some guy talking about my "final expenses". I told him I was going to live forever but thanks for thinking of me! :D

I don't usually answer random calls but when my Mom was sick I got a lot of calls that weren't recognizable so that's how that guy got in. :)

Darcyshannon 05-17-2019 04:12 PM

Well, it was signed into law in the last two years that companies could access and call our cell phones. It was a protection I had enjoyed. I detest the wacky text messages.

tranum 05-17-2019 07:37 PM

Even if I decline the call, my phone rings at the most inopportune time & I gotta pull it out to see it’s a call I won’t take. On my hands & knees in the garden or scrubbing a floor or half-ways in the door with both hands full of grocery bags or on a ladder washing a window or catching a much needed nap in the chair. These callers have no right to intrude in our lives.

Anniedeb 05-17-2019 09:43 PM

I don't know anyone overseas, and would never call an unknown number back. I don't pay a lot of attention to the phone. I pay for caller ID, and programmed our phone to block unknown, unavailable numbers. If an odd number calls more than a couple of times, it gets blocked. Fortunately, I rarely get a call on my cell that is not from someone in my contacts. I ignore it if I don't recognize the number. We've gotten the brace, computer virus, IRS and social security scare messages, laugh and delete them. I figure if it's important and legit, they will leave a message, and I can return the call. Everyone needs to be super vigilant to make sure those scammers don't get one cent of our hard earned money!!

ladyinpurple135 05-18-2019 06:52 PM

Aha!!! The single ring scam! I’ve been getting them in my cell phone - I do not ever call back but they drive me crazy. Thanks for the heads up - now I know what’s going on.

quiltingcandy 05-18-2019 07:03 PM

We don't answer calls from people we do not recognize either on our cel phones or land line.

I have been getting calls from all over the world lately. Not sure if they really are or it's just part of the scam - I am not about to answer them and certainly would not call them back. They don't leave a message so I guess they really don't want to talk to me.

Yep, been doing that for a few years now...It works!

Sherryquilts 05-23-2019 01:18 PM

LOL - I think they are entertaining if I get a live person. If I have time I will keep them on the line asking them questions. When I get around to asking them where they live or how much money they make or what time they eat supper - they hang up on me. When I get the one that says I have a problem with my computer I play along and tell them I need their phone number in case we get cut off...they give it to me - then I tell them I have to hang up to call the FCC or BBB or police to give them the number. And I do!

Ah yes, you have won millions but need to wire some money to Jamaica before you can receive your prize.

I have 3 numbers - 2 cell phones, and a Google Voice number that does not ring on any phone. The GV number gets plenty of calls, they never leave a message. Keep on calling, no one will ever answer!!

My very basic smart phone only rings 4 times before going to voicemail, and I can never get to it in time. There is no way to program it to ring more times. So I wind up calling back whoever called, if I know them. I don't get very many junk calls, not sure why.

Onebyone 05-27-2019 06:35 AM

I'm getting calls from people who say I called them from my number. I didn't. Why would anyone call back a number not recognized in the first place? A live person will at least leave a voice message. It amazes me how many try to break their necks trying to answer their phone. If I'm busy or occupied I let it ring. Doesn't bother me at all.

OMG. I used your suggestion about "do not disturb" on my iPhone and it is wonderful. Now, any unknown phone calls go straight to voicemail. I tried it out by deleting my DH from my contact list and calling me on his phone. it works like a charm. Love it. Thanks so much
