Year round schools do tend to start earlier. That may be some of those early dates.
I am not at year round school, teachers start the 18th of Aug and kid on the 20th. My own children go to a different district and the kids there go back on the 18th of Aug. Which means I don't need to find anywhere for them to be at the beginning of the year. |
8/4/11 first day of school here.
In Bethlehem, NC, I go back on Aug. 19 and the kids come back Aug. 25. We use to attend school 180 days, but the state has added 5 more days. This year the 5 extra days will be required teacher days, 2012-2013 they will be student days.
We start Sept. 6 here in Woodbury Minnesota. They tried the starting before Labor Day once and never did it again. I personally didn't like it.
My niece's kids will be starting Aug 4th or something like that. That school district is going to year-round schooling, so they'll be having 2 weeks off every so often.
Some of Chicago's schools (the early start schools - year round schooling) will also be starting at the beginning of August and the rest of Chicago's schools (traditional school year)will be starting after Labor Day. My nephew starts Aug 17th and the schools in Barrington (where I work) start Aug 23. Every district in Illinois has a different start and end time - it all depends on where you live. |
Here in Lee County, Fl the kids go back Aug. 8. When I was a kid in NJ, we didn't go back until after Labor Day. They keep talking about having school all year round so the kids don't forget over summer, but they were saying that when I was young too and it never materialized.
It starts August 9 here in Mid-Arizona.
kids around here return the day after Labor Day......teachers and staffers probably go in a few days the week before that.
My kids are grown, but my daughter has two starting in August around the 22nd. Her youngest is 6 and going into first grade, and they cut back one hour on his school day because of funds, they live in Indiana. The kids in Illinois start at differant times, depending on where you live. In the burbs we start around the middle of August.
I am in Tomball, Texas, very near Houston, and students begin school August 24th.
Here in the Texas Panhandle we are starting Aug 22
I've heard some of our public school students are starting on Aug. 2nd.
We go back Aug. 22....gee, and thanks for this thread! I'm totally depressed now. My husband and I both teach middle school, in the same building and have the same kids. It's a fun filled 9 months.
In Chandler AZ we are year round so school starts next Monday, 7/25. Meet the Teachers was yesterday for elementary school. Junior High & High School has orientation yesterday & today.
I go back to work at school (KC, KS) August 8th...kids start Aug. 12....we should finish (provided the snow goddess doesn't like us this year).... May23 for kids...24th for staff. We had 5 snow days to make up this year...ugh!
Start date August 22
Anticipated end date (you know that snow day thing) June 1 |
In upstate SC the sign up week
is next week. Not sure of real 1st day but probably the 2nd week of August. J J |
I am a teacher, and we start back August 8th. Seems too early to me, but we get out in May. I live in Southern California.
Jefferson County in Alabama starts Augusst 15th this and I think the earliest it started in the nearly 30 years I worked for them was August 6th, 2003. Some of the systems have gone to year round school haven't figured that one out , yet.
Tuesday after labor day here.
San Francisco Bay area starts August 23rd and end June 9th
My grandson will start Aug 10th if they can get all the FEMA trailers in and put together by then. Their school blew away in a tornado on April 14th, so they are having to find a place to have school.
Her school starts Aug. 29.
My grandkids only have five weeks for summer at the school they attend. They started back July 15. Public schools start August 15. I can remember starting the day after Labor Day and needing a sweater!
Public schools in Jacksonville, FL start I believe the 18th of Aug. Some private schools have different starting dates.
When I grew up in PA we always started school after Labor day . |
I haven't read the whole thread yet, but the person who mentioned AC in the schools was right. It is possible to begin in August with AC in the classrooms. The excessive heat and humidity is terrible here in South Louisiana sometimes as late as October. I can remember being a student (40's and 50's) trying to combat knats and perspiration. I have terrible memories of trying desperately not to swallow knats while playing my clarinet in band class. YUK. Another reason for the early start is that there are more holidays. Our parish has holidays such as Labor Day, Sugar Cane Festival Friday (teachers have inservice day and children have a holiday. Many students bring animals to the fair.), Thanksgiving week (teachers have state meetings), Christmas Holiday (of course it's not called that), Martin Luther Kind Day, Mardi Gras, Spring Break (Easter). Also twice a month, teachers have inservice on Thursday afternoon, thus giving early dismissal to the students. This year they begin around Aug 9 and end the last week of May. The local colleges start their summer sessions early in June, so students who participate in summer programs must be done with reg. school to be able to attend. As a teacher, I loved beginning early. I always went two weeks early on my own time to get my classroom set up and ready to go. I still get a little bit of the blues at this time of the year. It was my favorite time...just raring to go. The older I got, the more I appreciated those holidays. I needed to re-charge "my batteries."
My daughter starts on 8/8, but she gets out of school on 5/23.
I'm a teacher----I go back August 2 (August 1 was our start date but it's now an unpaid furlough day) and the kids come back on August 8. That's pretty much the way it is in all of Metro Atlanta, I think....
Schools around here start Aug. 15, tho grandson has been in football practice all week and next week starts twice a day practice. Temps 100*+ I will be glad because then my maid who comes every other week will not have to bring her son. He starts kindergarten this year and tho cute can get annoying when I want to cut some fabric.
My daughter is in year round school and started 7/18, but the traditional school stars 8/25.
No year round school here either and school starts first week August, this year it is the 4th, and usually ends last week in May.
Arkansas it is usually on the 19th of August, unless the 19th is on a weekend.
We have a lot of year around schools here and some started around the end of June and it seems every week another one is starting. They are a tracking system. The traditional schools open in about 4 weeks and the end around the middle of June.
My dgs in Queen Creek AZ starts to school on Monday.. His mom (my dd) is a teacher & her school starts 8/3.. just for teachers, students start the following Monday. Way back in the dark ages, when I went to school, we never started school until after Labor Day and we were out the friday before Memorial day. My dgd says that is because we didn't have as much history to lears and they do now. Did she mean I am getting old????

Oak Ridge, TN school starts Aug. 15 and they didn't get out til the 1st week of June.
My kids start back to school July 25th This is so depressing for me. It seems like children don't get a chance to be small anymore or get to spend enough time with their families without being under constant pressure from school work. I know my kids have to come home from school and spend sometimes 3 hours or more doing homework. I better get off my soapbox before this turns into a really long reply.
