I'm curious about the dates school starts in the rest of the country. Even before I had children, it depressed me for school to start before Labor Day. Now it starts before the state fair. Today I talked to a teacher that says they are starting August 4!!! Anybody else start that early?

bstock 07-20-2011 05:00 PM

In Western New York it is after Labor Day. But we stay in school untill the end of June.

amma 07-20-2011 05:02 PM

Out here I believe it is the Wednesday before Labor Day.
I think they do it this way so the kids first 3 weeks are only 3, 4 and then a 5 day week LOL Break them in gently  or maybe easing the Teachers back in? :D:D:D

CoyoteQuilts 07-20-2011 05:04 PM

I noticed on one school board that said August 8th.

isnthatodd 07-20-2011 05:05 PM

denise d 07-20-2011 05:25 PM

Our school starts August 17th.

My oldest starts this year and it seems so early. I wish it was just a little bit later, but with snow days and ice days... I guess that it is good that they start this early.

jayelee 07-20-2011 05:28 PM

We start September 6th but we also don't get out until the end of June

blueangel 07-20-2011 05:31 PM

QUILTNMO 07-20-2011 06:19 PM

ours starts back day after labor day

Pam B 07-20-2011 06:26 PM

I teach Kdg in central IN. My school district begins with two teacher days on Aug 17 and students report on the 19th. A neighboring district begins a week earlier than we do. To be honest...I knew this would happen once schools started air-conditioning their buildings. While I would prefer to start closer to Labor Day, I do enjoy getting out late May/early June.

cjomomma 07-20-2011 06:56 PM

Our city and county schools both start on Aug. 10th but the preschool starts on the 22nd.

alikat110 07-20-2011 07:50 PM

last week of Aug here

quilting cat 07-20-2011 07:59 PM

In my area the start dates not only vary by school districts, but in some districts different schools or different groups at one school start on different dates. The latter is when there are too many students for the number of classrooms and they have 3 or 4 "cycles" of students year-round -- which also means teachers change classrooms.
My local school district starts the first Thursday of September.

cashmommy11 07-20-2011 08:44 PM

Aug 5th here for a 1/2 day don't get it

Jim 07-20-2011 09:25 PM

School starts AUGUST 3rd in Nelson County (Bardstown) Kentucky...less than 3 weeks ughhhhhhhhhh

Gramof6 07-20-2011 09:46 PM

I am not certain but I think the grands that got to School in Edmond start back the 17th. Not sure when the grands in Moore start back. I sure wish they could wait until this heat spell has broken around here before returning. So so hot for those little ones! And surely they will not go outside in this for recess???? The playground equip will be too hot to play on. At the park last week, one little grand got an inch long burn on her upper wrist from the slide. She was up and down it before my DD could turn around with the other twin. Jeesh! Personally after Labor Day would be great with me.

Same here. Way too early if you ask me. When I was in school (in the stone age) we went back the Wed. after Labor Day.

LindaC 07-21-2011 02:52 AM

Here in Ireland school for secondary kids (age 13 to 18) finished 3rd June and they are back on 26th August. National school kids (age 4 to 12) finished on 30th July and they are back on 30th August

mizkyp 07-21-2011 03:29 AM

We start the week before Labor Day :(

clsurz 07-21-2011 03:42 AM

Ours is Aug 4th.

Our schools have always started the first week of August here in Coastal GA.

clsurz 07-21-2011 03:44 AM

If schools don't start until after labor day when does it end each year.

We start first week of August and end 3rd week of May.

TammyD 07-21-2011 03:45 AM

Sept 6th. But don't finish until a week into June.

clsurz 07-21-2011 03:48 AM

It would not do for our kids to be in school until middle to end of June. We have temperatures up in the high 90's already. It would be just to hot and to many medical problems with that kind of heat.

Like I said we go back first week of August and are out by 3rd week in May usually. Temperatures are already hot in May let alone June, July, August where we experience temperatures in the high 90's to 112 degrees and thats not counting the heat index that comes with it or high humidity.

Not where I grew up in Maine, back in the stone age. We went back towards end of July or early August but where let out a month to six weeks later to harvest potatoes on farms. As kids from age 5 on up we worked the fields from 5:30 until dark five days a week and if we had rain we had to work weekends as well to ensure the potatoes were all harvested before the cold weather set in.

My grandkids are ready to go back to school especially the 10 year old. She told me the other day she is tired from all her summer doings and needs a break and get back in school.

She spent her summer going to camp for two weeks and back and forth between her other grandparents home and mine and also our taking day trips here and there. :-)

pipp5 07-21-2011 04:08 AM

Ours start Aug 5 and we finished up the end of May. Summer just keeps getting shorter and shorter. I remember when I was in school it was a full 3 months.

Woodster 07-21-2011 04:16 AM

August 25th here in Raleigh. It seems they start early, then have tons of days off during the school year. When I rode my dinosaur to school, we only had the major holidays off, teachers did their extra work at night, not on special teacher days, had Lincoln's and Washington's birthdays off - not Presidents' Day, etc. Paper, pencils and books were provided FREE by the school. Imagine that!

ksea 07-21-2011 04:28 AM

Wow it seems like the rest of the country goes back before the kids here do, they start on Sept 6 and are done the firtst full week of June.

romanojg 07-21-2011 04:31 AM

Here in Norfolk the kids go back the first Tuesday after Labor Day in September and go until the middle of June

kathyd 07-21-2011 04:33 AM

First day for students is August 18. Cooks (like me) go in one day earlier to clean up the kitchen and get ready for all those hungry kids. I think some of these kids don't get many good meals when school isn't in. We see a difference in lunch counts after long weekends and holidays. Let's eat!

Julie in NM 07-21-2011 04:37 AM

Kids here 8/10! Teachers earlier..so sad.. But then out before Memorial day
