We had one that used to hang out near our yard until we figured out why the squirrel population had been dwindling

Beautiful! I have bird feeders right outside my kitchen window and the red tailed hawks occasionally pick off a mourning dove. Sometimes, I feel like I'm setting the poor doves up! But the hawk has to eat too.

Do you know the story of Pale Male, the famous Central Park hawk of New York City? When we were there in January we were lucky enough to see one of his children feasting on a pigeon. They are truly majestic animals.

We have some of those hawks, too!! Since they've been around here, we are no longer overrun with chipmonks.....

This an immature Sharp-Shinned Hawk. You are very lucky to have such treasures of the sky in your neighborhood.

Our city planted a bunch of these in our city , to hunt the pigeons we were over run with. But they are taking so many of our song birds. So I try to scare them away if they're in my yard. By the way , I'm from Saskatoon, Sk. Canada. But they are a beautiful bird too.

A few years ago we had a hawk nest in the vicinity. When mom hawk finally took the two kidlets out of the nest for flight and hunting training the kids ended up in our backyard a lot for some reason. One morning I stood just feet away from them as they were trying to catch a squirrel, who had age and treachery on his side and was giving them a reall run for their money. It ended up Squirrel 1 - Hawk Kids zip

Hawks are great "mousers," too! Those little mice do love to find a way into a warm home or outdoor shed to nest in the fall and winter. My most startling experience with a hawk was having one land briefly on my head when I was out in the yard one day. He approaced me from behind and was as surprised and confused as I was. He quickly moved to a nearby limb and sat there looking at me for at least 5 minutes.
