Wow, what a beautiful hawk - here in the Northwest Pacific - they are easily spotted but they are still magnificent every time.

quiltsRfun 02-15-2012 11:12 AM

We had one in our backyard (also in the city) a few years back. That was when we had a bird feeder and I felt like I was luring the birds to a predator so we took it down. Haven't seen the hawk since.

paulettepoe 02-15-2012 11:16 AM

Small dogs, and cats are easy prey for them. Beautiful bird. Nice picture, you are lucky to get one so close.

bigbrownowl 02-15-2012 11:21 AM

What spectactular photos - how lucky you are to see him so close!

I live in a small condo community in the city. We get over-run with rabbits in the summer. About once or twice everyother year, a hawk will swoop in......and the bunnies leave. But, they do come back, and so does the hawk. Mother Nature at work! A neighbor got a picture like yours once.

nativetexan 02-15-2012 12:03 PM

oh my goodness, my cats would go nuts!!! inside the house! lovely photos!

sandybuttons 02-15-2012 01:32 PM

raedar63 02-16-2012 04:28 AM

I love birds of prey. Thank you for sharing your photo.

azdesertrat 02-16-2012 06:02 AM

we are 2 pairs that are around alot, they are gorgeous to watch

Sewfine 02-16-2012 06:03 AM

He is a beaut, how about putting him in the center of a quilt?

quilter1 02-16-2012 06:19 AM

We have a pair that live in the park across the street from our house, it is a magnifcent site to see them. Unfortunately they like my yard as we feed the birds so they like to come around to hunt. One of them took my mourning dove family right from their nest on my house. I still think they are beautiful.

Tink's Mom 02-16-2012 09:25 AM

my husband saw one at the park (in the city), while walking Tink in December. He/she was munching on something in his claw, probably a mouse or bird.
This is why we don't let Tink out in the yard without one of us with her...

caspharm 02-16-2012 10:03 AM

Beautiful! I do miss seeing the hawks from my old home, but I am starting to see a few around here.

annthreecats 02-16-2012 10:48 AM

We have red tail hawks here in N. Florida and I see them circling high every once in a while. They are fun to watch. I keep an eye on my fat little dog when I see big birds of prey flying about. hehehehehe

StarofMoonDancer 02-16-2012 11:48 AM

Wow he gave you a treat for sure. They are so majestic
:):):)

Angellight 02-16-2012 12:08 PM

I also feed the birds, and love watching them at my feeder.
I once watched a Kestrel swoop in and take a Finch. At first I was upset, but also realized that it was the "Laws of Nature" at work. I only saw it once, and that was enough, and I still feed the birds.
I live near a reservoir and can see the Hawks scouting for their next meal. However, my favorite sites have been the Bald Eagles out on the ice in the winter wondering how to "go fishing". Or the one I saw swoop down into the water in the summer and comeout with a fish in its talons.
Beautiful photos and beautiful birds.

Susan

When my hubby was working, one day I needed the car for something so i was taking him to work. When we turned on to one of the roads we had to drive on towards his job, a red tailed hawk chasing a mourning dove and almost flew into the windshield.

luce321 02-16-2012 04:08 PM

What a magnificent creature.

katastrofy1967 02-16-2012 04:34 PM

Yeah I have laying hens and I live on a lake. I have one that stops by everyday and sits in a tree over the coop like he is trying to figure out how to get in there. As soon as he lands I hear the rooster tell his girls to go in the hen house. They are Defintly a serious predator in the wildlife community, although very beautiful. He can have all the bunnies he wants come garden season though, those guys can do a number on your flowers and crops, and in just one evening. Don't let their "cuteness" fool you. They are destructive! I would rather have the hawk anyday

nivosum 02-16-2012 06:44 PM

If you like to look at hawks, you will love this website.

We caught one in our hay room a few weeks ago. He was using our pigeons as a fast food buffet! After a couple of days we trapped him in our hay room, caged him, and took him to the county's state park the next day to let him loose. Beautiful bird but so far he hasn't been back to our place. Maybe he didn't like the bum's rush from the restaurant hosts! LOL

quiltpd 02-16-2012 07:44 PM

He is beautiful ! Wonder what has so interested that he stps in your yard so frequently ?

blackbearbetty 02-17-2012 04:41 AM

he might be beautiful but they kill the other birds.

litacats 02-17-2012 04:51 AM

he is a beauty. we have lots of magpies and kookaburra's but they seldom stay long enough for me to go get my camera

judi wess 02-17-2012 06:21 AM

Oh my, is that a peregrine falcon? I've read that they are setting up house in NYC. There was even one featured in the movie Bone Collector.

No, I believe it is a sharp shinned hawk. Smaller of the hawks, not a real threat to small pets, more rodents and smaller birds. We have them frequently at our feeders during the winter months, using the location as a fast food stop preying on smaller birds.

We also have owls and Golden Eagles...now those are a threat to our cat and Miniature Wired Haired Dachshund.

I hear them and sometimes see one in the trees outside our back fence. If he goes after the little birds and I see him I will swing a broom at him. I don't think it is beautiful. I have always had small dogs in a small fenced yard and I always go outside with them. I have heard owls too, I keep an eye out for them also. I don't like the food chain and I don't like them either.

AnnT 02-17-2012 02:21 PM

Wow! How cool is that?
