She will not win Mother of the Year!
 

About 9 days ago a young neighborhood cat had kittens in my yard. She cared for the four of them for two or three days and then lost interest. A couple of them didn't make it, but a dear friend of mine has taken on the task of hand feeding the remaining two. How could a mother leave these little ones?

Was it her first litter? Or maybe some disturbed her "nesting" spot.
I know when Kola had her first litter, she had her babies under the steps of the vacant house next door.
She brought the home, a few days later.

Is the mother cat still alive? She could have gotten run over or something.

Mama is doing just fine--we see her lounging around next door all day and she even comes over here for breakfast some days. I don't think she is over a year old herself --- just kids having kids!

Can you encourage the neighbor to have mama cat fixed so she won't have any more litters?

Awe, poor lil toodies!

Sometimes a mother cat will stop taking care of her babies if she senses there is something wrong with them. Nature can't afford to expend energy on offspring that are not likely to survive. Or, she just might have poor mothering instincts or be ill herself. It's not her fault. We can't ascribe human characteristics to a cat. The one at fault is the human who is allowing her to reproduce willy-nilly.

The mama cat needs neutering or this will keep happening. It's amazing how quickly they can reproduce. Is the mama part feral? And if the Dad is around, sometimes they kill the babies. These two should not be given away until they are neutered...there are places that will do that reasonably. Bless your friend for taking care of two sweet babies. Poor things.
