Spray and Wash works great, but you have to have a window in the bathroom that you can open for ventilation. Spray the shower and let it sit on the walls for an hour before washing it off.

HisPatchwork 04-13-2011 05:26 AM

If it is only soap scum, you can clean it with baking soda. {not sure about mineral deposits} It works miracles on the stove top also, without scratching. It is good for cleaning most everything.

Squeegy and spray with white vinegar. I try to use less chemicals - Go Green! :-)

WOW!! I learned lots and have some of the products.. I just have to use them.. My favorite product is Spic and Span in powder form.. it just's smells clean, however I can only find it in liquid and I don't like it. Have any of you seen Spic and Span in powder form? (Orange box) All of a sudden I have the urge to clean....

Whitney60 04-13-2011 05:31 AM

What does everyone use on their windows? I seem to have streaks when the sun hits the them. My family room is all windows.

MommaDorian 04-13-2011 05:35 AM

What do you guys use on the actual tub? I have quite a bit of soap build up on the walls and corners. Any recommendations?

I would suggest you ask your niece to help you clean the shower, this might help her realize that it just doesn't clean itself! She might not know any better, some "kids" don't know any better.

I would say after you get it clean then get the scrubbing bubbles dispensor to use after showering in the future. Then you should never have to "clean" it again. My husband uses it in his shower and just a quick "guy" squeegee and push the button and you're done. I have not cleaned that shower in 3 years and it does look good. I spend more time on the outside of the door than inside.

Baloonatic 04-13-2011 06:31 AM

When my former tenant moved out he didn't have time to clean and asked me to hire a housecleaner. She arrived armed with a hand-held steamer which she used on almost everything! I always go through the unit with a toothbrush (yes, really!) and it is spotless. But using the steamer saved a lot of elbow grease! It came with a little squeegee just below the steam spout, and she had to use only one hand to do the shower. Cleaned from the top down, the steam dissolved the scum the squeegee wiped it off. And no scratching of the finish! Even after knowing its clean when I do it, the use of sterilizing steam gave me a tremendous peace of mind! I'll be calling her for the move-outs from now on.
I'm looking for the perfect steamer for my own use now. But every time I think I've found it I read the user comments and get scared off. Anyone here who just loves their steamer??

megs0863 04-13-2011 07:29 AM

For years, I shower with liquid soap and then I try to be the last one showering and then I towel dry the tile so tile doesn't stay wet all day. This really has worked to keep the scum at bay.

This is a very interesting technique! Worth a try! It works eh?

I use the cheapest shampoo I can find. Dollar
store variety. Using a damp cloth, apply to walls. Wait a few minutes and wash off. If the walls are really bad you may have to repeat this process. After it is clean...try this process every two weeks for a sparkling shower.

I got clear glass instead of the frosted patterned kind just so we would do it every time. Just takes a minute and really helps. There is a product that you buy at automotive supply stores - clear glass or something. It left a film, but the water didn't make stains on the glass.

* Product at automotive supply is called Rain X.

I've used cheap vodka to clean a musty moldy smelling wooden trunk from an estate sale. The smell disappeared after two cleanings. I was told that vodka is a natural anti-bacterial. Could be, but it worked when all other methods had failed.

There is testimony from scientists in Europe, Asia and U.S. from universities and testing laboraties as to these not working and several have lawsuits against them for fraud. :(

You have to find a reputable contractor who knows what he is buying. There are a lot of knockoffs. DD has the system in her new house and there is noticeable difference in no water spots, not even in her stainless steel sink. That impressed me! My ss sink is impossible to keep the water spots off.

Ladies! Haven't you heard that a cut lemon does the job? No joke. Just like vinegar, it dissolves the soap scum away without having to scrub. Best choice is to rub the glass down with the lemon, then immediately rinse it since anything acidic will etch the glass if left too long.

Squeegie works great, but I can never get hubbie to use it - he would rather pay for a maid once a quarter rather than actually have to lift a hand to use it. I don't like the buildup or the smell of chemicals, so this is my tried and true method. Couldn't believe it when I first used it, and it smells great afterwards.

Does this only work on the glass? Or the whole tub?

VickyS 04-13-2011 11:24 AM

The whole tub. Caution though, it does get slippery on porcelain. I've used it to scrub down my sink to get rid of the buildup.

I live in an area where we get well water 3/4 of the year and rain runoff the rest of the time. Mineral content goes through the roof! My neighbors put in a filter that uses table salt in place of the minerals and I thought I was drinking a salt lick.

It does a good job on mildew, but being a strong acid, use caution and definitely rinse everything down afterwards.

Good luck

donnalynett 04-13-2011 11:35 AM

We cleaned vacant rentals for a living for 5 years (very long years) and we found the best way to clean is with a razor blade paint scraper. After removing as much scum as you can that way then clean with a Magic Eraser.

Naturalmama 04-13-2011 11:56 AM

When it's clean, wipe it down with some lemon oil on a lint-free rag. It will keep it looking beautiful and it smells great too!

You can also just use a towel to wipe it down after each shower. With this method you also have to have a place to hang the towel so it dries during the day.

I do this every day. In addition to preventing unwanted buildup, it stretches just about my entire body. Two for the price of one!

I do the same. Don't remember when the last time i can my shower stall. Always is shining.

Mr Clean Magic Eraser

MaggieMeg 04-13-2011 01:23 PM

Mr. Clean Magic Erasers work wonders for those that don't tolerate smelly sprays. Makes shower doors look like new. Lime Away works if you don't mind the smells.

JusticeClan 04-13-2011 02:37 PM

When we lived in California we had awful lime deposits on the shower doors and walls. I used Kaboom to get it off. You may need to use a S.O.S. pad to scrub some on the stubborn spots, but the Kaboom really loosen it for you.
Hope that helps.

Barbara49 04-13-2011 04:43 PM

I clean my shower walls as good as i can and then I wax them. i learned this years ago when the fiberglass surrounds came out. it works wonders and the water beads right up and makes wiping down a breeze. Try it!

Does anyone have any sure fire ways that really work to remove that stuff? All info is greatly appreciated.

once it's clean, buy her a squeegee and have her use it each and every time she uses the shower......no more cleaning down the shower walls......this works wonders.........

Alondra 04-13-2011 08:12 PM

White vinegar will get it off, but don't use it very often, because vinegar also dissolves calcium, which is a component of the grouting. Once or twice a year won't hurt, but every week, no.. unless you just love to regrout. You can also unscrew your showerhead and soak it in a solution of 50% vinegar and 50% water, and then use an old toothbrush to clean all the white (calcium) deposits off.

M.I.Late 04-13-2011 08:44 PM

Here are the instructions for Dear Niece:

Tilex has a "soap scum" cleaner. Spray it on - leave - go back in 10 minutes with a sponge mop - give it a quick mop - then rinse. Shiny and gorgeous. No sore knees either.

Repeat again before Auntie has to tell you "it's filthy"...

P.S. NEVER-NEVER use an SOS pad on a shower... or you'll be replacing the entire unit - also, no cleanser (ajax/comet) if the unit is less than 10 years old.

How do I know? I just bought a 10 yr old home that the owner used cleansers on. All needs replaced. 3 showers, 6 sinks and 1 whirlpool bath tub. Grrrr....

I agree. Baking soda is my standby for cleaning everything from burned on spills on the stove to shower walls. Works great. No smell. No caustic chemicals. Kind to the septic system.

I agree--and I also love Scrubbing Bubbles. They make one with a power sprayer so all you have to do is pull the trigger--no more pumping it and causing your arthritic hands to hurt! And you can refill it too.
I've also in the past used a squeegee to keep the shower clean. Mostly these days I take baths. :D

azam 06-18-2011 05:19 PM

I learned this from my daughter's cleaning lady: Making sure that shower or tub is dry scrub with a dry SOS Pad, most of the scum will come off. Then wet shower & pad and srub off whatever residue is left. Works great on glass shower door, too, and no it doesn't leave scratches. :-D

P.S. This works great on tile, don't know what it would do to a fiberglass tub.

lavenderfire 06-19-2011 04:03 AM

my sister showed me the easiest and cheapest way to keep the shower clean. Take 1/2 water and 1/2 alcohol. Spray and use magic eraser. Cuts right thru. I use once a week to keep doors clean. Good for mirrors and even the rest of the shower.

Magic eraser??? What's that? 1/2 water and 1/2 alcohol is essentially Windex, which works for removing light soap scum but doesn't hit the hard stuff at all without soaking for quite a bit.

I would do the squeegee but can't get the hubby to do it on a regular basis so I would have to chase him into the shower every time in our hard water area.
