I admit it...he does. I guess its just a good thing it doesn't happen often. DD21 has been having some headaches...ones that have her rolling on the bed in tears. I'm thinking migraines. BIG family history of them on my side. My mother, one of my sisters, and my niece have them. he insists that it is sinus and as soon as I walked out of the room he called his mother and his sister to see if they agreed with him. grrr. Once his sister said it could be migraines THEN he said maybe so. and yes he knows I'm ticked at him. He still insists that otc things like tylenol will help and it does no good to tell him we've tried that already. I know what the problem is.....my mother turns into a stark raving crazy person when she has a migraine and he's afraid dd will be the same. That and since we talked about me the other night I am suddenly incapable of knowing whats going on.

franie 06-21-2010 05:35 PM

Migraines! Need quiet! No smells! No light! I would often get sick with mine. Good news menopause cured me!

ginnie6 06-21-2010 05:37 PM

she's laying down in the coolest room of the hosue in the dark and I sent the younger kids to bed so it would be quiet.

sharon b 06-21-2010 05:43 PM

Caffeine... and a heating pad on the forehead or neck.. or cold towels ( everyone is different)

Be sure and check with a doc just to make sure that is what is going on

saf45 06-21-2010 05:48 PM

i agree with franie, but she should see a dr,they are not fun,

JJs 06-21-2010 05:49 PM

what does the doctor say?
I had migraines really bad (knife stabbing in my temple, sick, etc) and dr ran all kinds of tests to make sure it was "just" migraine

marsye 06-21-2010 05:51 PM

I have one ever now and then....I put my head on the heating pad on low and it gets rid of it!

Tink's Mom 06-21-2010 05:54 PM

Take her to the Dr.,please....Migraines are horrid, but not knowing for sure what is causing it is not good. I worked with a young lady that had horrid migraines everyday...only it wasn't just a migraine...this girl had a tumor. PLease get it checked out...

mrspete 06-21-2010 05:56 PM

My poor daughter has them and begin when she was five years old. Her precious daughter did the same. My maw inlaw, ditto. It's a curse, mee-trip-toe-leen or any of the other drugs do not stop it, just dulls the edge of the blade. They've had scans and tests......still. I pray for an end to that horrible difficulty for everyone. Blessings to all of you, Ruth

sewgull 06-21-2010 05:56 PM

Ice pack works for me. OTC stuff does not work, take her to a doctor or chricoprator. Chiropractor is first place
I go.

Jim's Gem 06-21-2010 05:56 PM

My DD#3 gets them too. Taking Ibuprophen makes it worse because though it would give her some relief, she would get rebound headaches with it.
Megs needs to go lie down in a quiet dark room for a while!!
Sometimes (ok, more than sometimes) guys are clueless or they are in deep denial about some things.

sewjoyce 06-21-2010 05:58 PM

I had them for several years during my younger days. Medical dr. gave me lots of pain pills. Finally went to a chiropractor and he got rid of them after a few visits.... :D

cjomomma 06-21-2010 05:58 PM

This may sound silly but give her a piece of chocolate and a cup of coffee. The caffeine from both will open up the vessels in the brain and help ease the migraine and make it more bareable.

momymom 06-21-2010 05:59 PM

My youngest DD has them. She's on meds to try to prevent them. She has to see the dr every now and them to see how she's doing. We call them sick headaches. Get her to the dr asap. It may take awhile to find the right meds to help her, but for us it was worth it. My DD is 17.

MNQuilter 06-21-2010 06:02 PM

I get hormonal migraines. A couple of things help. She may benefit from Exedrin. It is the only thing that helps me. I've tried Imitrex, but it made me feel more ill than the actual migraine did. Honestly, the one thing that has really helped is that I had Mirena placed after my son was born. Since it controls the hormonal up and down , not nearly as many migraines. Unfortunately, they recommend it only if you've already had kids! Hope you can figure out her triggers and can minimize the headaches for her!

purplemem 06-21-2010 06:03 PM

I had terrible headaches that my monster-in-law kept saying were sinus. When I began losing vision, I went to eye doctor. He did MRI and found a brain tumor! They removed the tumor, now I have different headaches. See a doctor, maybe 2!

Yes, I agree....black coffee helps me.

ginnie6 06-21-2010 06:21 PM

well she has been to the doctor recently...as in the last few weeks and told them about the headaches...they didn't think much about it. She had a physical for school. Bloodwork and everything. She's on the pill so hormone surges should be controlled? We're trying some cayenne now to see if that helps. I think though that the chiro is the next thing she needs to pursue. She says she has felt this headache coming for a week. And yes I know they are horrible to deal with.

walen 06-21-2010 06:29 PM

Migraines have multiple sources, but make sure it's a migraine that DD is having. The doctor is the best place for advice and meds; they have some that can be taken to prevent migraines. Also, if you can, see a chiropractor. Good luck and yes, GRRR to your husband, his mom, and his sister.

mom-6 06-21-2010 06:38 PM

My coworker can't take any hormonal type meds (ie birth control) of any kind because they increase the frequency and intensity of her migranes. So you might want to ask the doctor about this possibility as well.

lab fairy 06-21-2010 06:50 PM

Here's some good information on headaches. I get debilitating migraines and am allergic to "triptans" which cuts out a lot of medications available. Finding triggers can be as important as anything else. OTC medications never help me but some actually make the pain worse.

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/e...cle/000709.htm

I hope this helps with at least trying to tell what type of headache she has. If she goes to sleep and wakes up with her headache, you probably need to talk to your doctor. Prolonged migraines are very debilitating and can really interfere with her daily life.

She needs to see a specialist. For a headache to be that severe she needs pain management. There are new treatments and meds available. A general MD, or GYN are not Drs. to go to about migraines, they know enough to refer you to a a Dr. that does.

PALS65 06-21-2010 07:03 PM

I take a propranolol every day to help prevent migraines. Take her to the doctor people do not realize that migraines are not just a headache!!

Born2Sew 06-21-2010 07:22 PM

These kinds of headaches are horrible. Years ago when I first started having them, DH said he wouldn't let a little thing like a headache stop him. I told him I hoped he never had to experience one, if he did he'd understand. It wasn't long afterward that he started getting cluster migraines. Granted, I've been told they are even worse and once the cycle begins it is hard to stop. But, they weren't such a little thing anymore once he experienced them.

I too take propanolol and haven't had one in a long long time. I feel for your daughter, hope she feels better soon.

Lostn51 06-21-2010 08:02 PM

My wife just started having migraines again after a 30 year break from them. I cant remember what the medication he gave is called but they are $32.41 a pill!!

The Neurologist told her to take one if she feels on coming on and if it does not go away then take another one. They melt in your mouth and work in less than 10 minutes my wife said. But they tend to make her sleepy.

If you want me to get the name of the medication I will.

Billy

lab fairy 06-21-2010 08:20 PM

Propanolol is a beta-blocker used for high blood pressure. Not everyone can take it and it really depends a lot on blood pressure. When my blood pressure was really high I took the stuff and it did nothing for the headaches. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how you look at this one, I lost 100 pounds in a year, the blood pressure went down but my dosage wasn't adjusted with the weight loss. I was on the floor with almost no blood pressure. I actually have fewer headaches without it.

I now see a neurologist who specializes in headaches. I mostly manage by knowing what are and aren't triggers. The headache diary was illuminating. I never realized what I was doing before I would get a really bad one.

Some people are trying ergotamine deratives with some success.

Barb M 06-21-2010 08:22 PM

I used to get them really bad years ago, but i hardly ever get them now. I discovered msg, and anything to do with soy gave them to me. Tried dif pain killers, but what worked for me is this. A glass of coke and two plain, uncoated aspirin. The caffeine in the coke, and the blood thinning in the aspirin gets the blood flowing through the head again. I've tried coffee, and it doesn't work as good as coke.

minnow895 06-21-2010 09:51 PM

tylenol dose not work for migrains my doc put me on asperin when i have migrains it thions the bloos and really helps

raptureready 06-21-2010 10:11 PM

Sometimes migrains can be caused but odd things. Years ago I got a flu shot. For the next year and a half I got a migrain if I ate anything with a lot of eggs in it or if I ate an egg. Mine were so bad that I kept a heavy quilt on my curtain rod, pulled back when I didn't need it, and a bucket by the bed. After the flu shot wore off I haven't had a migrain since and can once again eat eggs. Has anything changed in her life lately? New meds? Flu or Pnumonia shots? Stress levels? No matter what it is, she should see a doctor.

candlequilter 06-22-2010 12:58 AM

I use to get migranes and nothing would help them. But then I went to a chiropractor when I was having one and after an adjustment and 10 minutes of quite in his office with the lights off it was gone. Had a few more after that and immediately went to him again with the same results. I swear by them. But thank heaven I haven't had one in years.

ginnie6 06-22-2010 03:00 AM

she is going to the doctor....we'll try the chiro first but I think talking to the actual doctor not the nurse practitioner like she usually does is in order...and I am not a fan of doctors! She was in so much pain last night though. its been about 3 months since she had one that bad but still. I know they have a lot of new treatments out. I used to tell my mother about everyone I head about. She finally fell asleep in the recliner....she said it hurt worse to lay her head down. But this morning she is on the couch.

quilting memaw 06-22-2010 03:04 AM

My hubby gets them now every year. Last year they came early. Every time the mold count is high, he gets them. I give him a decongestant and we watch. He has to take them before 3pm. if not....it hits like a ton of bricks! I feel for ya all.....they are no fun.

My neurologist thought that was the best choice for me. My family has a history of high blood pressure so it also helps in that way. I have been told by several doctors that propranolol has few side effects so it is also nice that way. I like the idea of a diary but I don't have any patterns to my headaches so in the 30 years I have had them we can't find a trigger. I have tried drugs like imitrex but end up feeling worse. I am changing to more of an optical migraine as I don't get the pounding headache but lots of visual things.

amandasgramma 06-22-2010 06:22 AM

Migraines can be caused by so many things. I had them from age 6 to 37. My then-husband talked me into going to a chiropractor. Gosh, I'm NOT going to a quack! Well, he bugged me to the point I went......haven't had a migraine since!!!! Looking back, they started after a car accident -- where I landed on my had on the floorboard (before seatbelts)... Considering the headaches "run" in your family....there's another reason (hormonal is my guess, too). Unless a person has experienced them, they have no idea how bad they are. My 1st husband didn't understand.....it's so sad and disheartening to have them treat you like you're an idiot!!!!

Pamela Artman 06-22-2010 06:35 AM

I've had migraines all my life, but they were especially bad three times in my life - all during super hormonal changes. The first, when I was a teenager, the second when I was on birth control pills, and third, (now) going through menopause. When I was on the pill, I remember the headache being the first thing I was aware of before opening my eyes in the morning and the last thing before falling asleep at night. The dr. took me off the pill. A couple years ago, I had a headache that lasted for 3 weeks and it was the worst I've ever had. The dr. did an MRI and an ARI to make sure it wasn't a tumor or anurism, and it was just the migraines, so she gave me a new med... a miracle drug for me! Called Midrin. I take one at the first sign of a headache and if needed an hour later take another. If it's still there after another hour I can take a third, but rarely do I even need the second pill. Migraines are terrible!!

reach for the stars 2 06-22-2010 06:56 AM

I get migraines and they are horrible. Should see a
DR. though they have so many meds that help. I take one when I feel one coming on. I have to many health issues for the daily ones, but there is help out there.

My DH was on propanonol for years to prevent migraines and it really worked. Before that, he suffered with them for a long time until he had an episode that he was paralyzed for 60 seconds or so at the onset of a headache and then had a searing flash of heat down the left side of his body and lost all feeling. It's been 19 years since then and the left side of his body still feels like the sensation you have after your limbs fall asleep, that tingling feeling. It looked like a stroke to us but after CT scans and MRIs, it was diagnosed as a migraine with complications.

So they aren't just a headache if they are frequent or severe. They can lead to other problems. You definitely want to see a doctor.

mom-6 06-22-2010 06:43 PM

Artificial sweeteners can be another trigger for some people.

joyceinoh 06-22-2010 07:11 PM

I am a life long migrane suffer,
it runs in my mom's side of family.
There are things they can do for them now, that they couldn't years ago. So Please take her to a Dr.
Also there are foods that trigger them.
Artifical sweetners are bad for me, even in gum.
DD and I both have to avoid Chocolate,
Smells, like wearing purfume, cause that smell goes with you all day.
Sumatriptions, sold under different names, what works for one might not work for another , So ask Dr. for samples.

My new Dr. put me on 80 mgs of Inderal, and it really helped. I was having migraines daily. I still get some but the Imitrex really takes care of those, and now when I get a migraine it don't last as long..
(google Inderal and migraines)
And yes sitting up to sleep helps but after awhile you need to lay down cause you get a stiff neck which doesn't help a thing.

earthwalker 06-22-2010 07:18 PM

To quote IrishNY "My DH was on propanonol for years to prevent migraines and it really worked. I can sympathise with IrishNY's husband I suffer migraines caused by Systemic Lupus, earlier last year I had the worst one ever, what they later discovered was a hemiplegic migraine (I had the same thing as quoted above). A stroke was ruled out and I was referred to a Neurologist as Lupus, like MS can affect the brain, my GP at one stage thought I was developing MS, which was quite scary. Fortunately I have no neurological damage or problems, but it is very important to have a thorough medical examination and some testing, an MRI could be in order here.

There is a vast difference between a sinus problem and a migraine. Perhaps it as simple as a hormonal thing and I'm not trying to suggest your girl has any serious disease, but the poor thing needs to get some relief and get some answers about what could be the cause.

Unless members of your family are medical professionals, I'd probably take their "diagnosis" with a grain of salt. All the best, and come here and vent if you see any more red!
