This is a spin-off of the Speaking of Hats topic - - -

I remember in first and second grade wearing flesh colored long cotton knit stockings - I think we had some sort of kiddie garter belt to hold them up - I don't remember how they stayed up - they were thigh high.

I do remember nylons - and how hard it was to get the seam straight. And with those we had a garter belt. It was always a debate about whether to wear it over or under the underpants. I think "under" was the usual choice.

My DH kind of misses those days!

I miss the body I had then.

I can still get into a pair of pantyhose - but, man, it's a struggle. One leg always twists and it's about four tries to get that right!

ptquilts 05-06-2011 01:45 PM

I started wearing nylons right before panty hose came about so I remember garter belts!! (along with that other kind of belt - ugh- you older gals will know what I mean)

With miniskirt coming in panty hose was inevitable, as all the girls in my 5th grade class were always worried about the tops of their nylons showing.

Nowadays I wear hose maybe once a year.

debbieumphress 05-06-2011 01:49 PM

OMgosh. I can see pictures flying thru my mind now. I always had on little tights and long sockies growing up. Then thru middle school, the ever popular fish net hoses in all colors that matched my shoes, etc.The high school, before we could wear slacks, we had to wear dresses so then there was the choice of stockings or knee highs. Then somehow the wonderful pantyhose came to be. I still love those rascals. I always but a bigger size so I don't have to do the pantyhose dance to get them on. Wiggle, wiggle, stretch, down , up, wiggle more, almost there, wiggle, pull, tug and wahlah.... finished. Whew. tired thinking about it. Oh and did anyone go thru the Mary Kay colored leg makeup which went on nice enough but once your sat adn swetaed a little, there were white spots behind the knees etc and touchups required. Why in the world did we go to such lengths to look Nice.??????? Laughing at the memorires.
Garter belts, oh yeah, very sexy, but my short fat legs never fit them right and I can hear the snap as they came loose when I sat down too quickly. ROFL..........

How about the fishnet stockings back in late 60's? We thought they looked soooooo cooool...

bearisgray 05-06-2011 01:58 PM

I never had fishnet stockings -

Don't think they even had them in the stores near where we lived then.

I guess I thought they always belonged to chorus line girls!

carhop 05-06-2011 02:04 PM

I wore the long socks all the way up your legs with a garterbelt to hold them up it gets cold in MN and went to cathloic school girls wore dresses you would put snow pants on but when you got to school you took the pants off

My kids can't believe that they were a fashion statement then. apparently now fishnets are only worn by "questionable " ladies.

We did, too - and it was a public school in a small rural town.

My Mom did a campaign to allow the girls to keep their pants/slacks on when it was really cold.

Leota 05-06-2011 02:20 PM

I remember garter belts as well as fish net hose and color nylon hose with shoes every color of the rainbow... I was one well dressed girl... oh and you dress out for physical education so you also had to get redressed before going to your next class. Wooden benches in the locker room would inevitably snag the hose... and instant runner... :( yup miss those days...sort of...

frauhahn 05-06-2011 03:02 PM

I'm so glad we moved beyond garter belts!!

I had hot pink fishnets that matched my hot pink mini dress and hot pink shoes :-) I could probably been seen coming from miles away.

luckylindy333 05-06-2011 06:21 PM

In the 60's we wore fishnet stockings and colored tights... how about the white go-go boots, anyone?

gramajo 05-06-2011 06:24 PM

Had some of those too

emerald46 05-06-2011 06:49 PM

Fishnet, colored tight, white go-go boots...I was there!

countrycottage 05-06-2011 06:52 PM

Ugh! Pantyhose were invented by a MAN for sure. Instrument of torture, especially in hot weather.

Parrothead 05-06-2011 07:20 PM

I remember the garter belt and hose. I use to think panty hose were wonderful but after having to wear them for many, many years while working, I am happy to say now I do not own a pair and never intend to purchase them.
Do any of you remember your Mother or Aunts during WWII putting make up on their legs and using an eyebrow pencil to draw the seam line on the back of the leg? Nylons were not available during the war.

You're quit a story teller. I remember all of them, pantyhose I like the best, garter belts lifted up your dress skirt when you set down didn't like them. Now all I wear is knee highs, don't were a dress very often so no panty hose.

Sweeterthanwine 05-06-2011 09:05 PM

I don't own a pair of pantyhose and don't intend on buying any either. Wore them while I worked and after I retired they all went out the window. I remember girdles and garter belts to. I usually only wear pants now and when I do wear a skirt, there are still no pantyhose. Comfort for me nowadays.

'I remember in first and second grade wearing flesh colored long cotton knit stockings - I think we had some sort of kiddie garter belt to hold them up - I don't remember how they stayed up - they were thigh high."

Oh, I remember these, didn't have a garter belt but some round stretchy things to hold the stockings up. Problem was they never did stay up so when you walked first you pulled up one stocking and with the next step you pulled up the other stocking. In the Winter my mother would put the leggings that were part of my winter coat set under my dress and tell me to keep the leggings on in school, teachers didn't want us to do that but as first and second graders we had a hard time getting the straps of those heavy leggings on and off since they were under our dresses. Teachers didn't want to help us, can't blame them as there were 30 kids in our classes, teachers told the girls to wear those ugly thick cotton stockings which we hated. Either we wore them or our legs froze in the winter. May in Jersey

WOW!! That's STYLIN'!!!

Miss Priss 05-07-2011 03:56 AM

And how about those Playtex rubber girdles. My dad said they were like wrapping a rubber band around a pencil. I too wish I were that size again.......

jhoward 05-07-2011 03:58 AM

You gals are reminding me of "fashions", I haven't thought about in yrs...is that called suppressing memory?? so funny.....long socks in grade school....garter belts.....OMG....good laughs for so early in the am...

jitkaau 05-07-2011 04:13 AM

Yes...unfortunately it's compression stockings now...

LOL! They are harder to get on than the pantyhose. My husband has knee problems and needs help getting his compression stockings on each morning. He sits back in his recliner while I struggle to get the socks on him. Once or twice, I've lost my grip while pulling them up. He says that he needs a cup to protect his groin - just in case! He's grunting and groaning while I'm doing all the work and building up a sweat!

I haven't worn pantyhose in years and don't plan on doing it anytime soon. I hated the struggle to put them on. It looked like someone trying to pack sausage into a tube!

I was a twig and heard this too. Funny now pulling on a pair of Spanx and thinking about when I didn't have enough hips to keep the panty girdle up!

I was just a little behind some of you and just missed the white go-go boots but not mini skirts and fighting over hemlines.

We must have grown up at about the same time. My sister and I wore an "over the shoulders harness-type thing that had garters hanging off it. My dad always helped us get dressed while Mother was finishing breakfast. At times, even he would get frustrated trying to get the thing straightened out so it would drop over our head and be right. Been through all the others too--hose with seams, panty hose, knee-hi's, which is all I wear now, since I'm almost always in slacks or a long skirt.

Numa 05-07-2011 05:25 AM

My daughter can't believe that we wore pants under our dresses to school then had to take them off. I still remember(insert hate!) the black and white houndstooth corduroy pants that I wore in 5th grade! They must have looked so COOL with my plaid dress(all my dresses were plaid!)! And they came from the Spiegel's catalog!! Remember that!

Yooper32 05-07-2011 05:44 AM

I'm from the era of long brown stockings which I had to wear FOREVER. I would get to school and roll them down to my ankles and there would be that large ungainly do-nut, made walking difficult. Than on the way home, roll them back up so folks don't know I didn't smother in them all day. I had a friend later in life that had the same experience in life and she wrote a poem about it. I would include it but it is still over at the farm.

Treasureit 05-07-2011 05:48 AM

I wore a lot knee socks in elementry school - still had to wear dresses.

marthe brault-hunt 05-07-2011 05:53 AM

In the fifties they brought up stretchy pantyhose that were opaque like the cotton stockings. My mother sent me to the store to buy a pair of cotton I came back with the stretches. I had to bring them back, she firmly believed that they were made for a toddler.

f rogers 05-07-2011 05:54 AM

I wore those long cotton flesh stockings too.but we held them up with the elastic rings that rolled ver the stocking and cut off all circulation. also wore snow pants to school.and my mother would be mad at us if we walk the snow bank where the wing of the plow made and we would come home sometimes wet up our crotch from falling through the snow.

me, too.

what held mine up was little garter thingies that were attached to the leg part of panties. i remember the color was like nobody's flesh seen before or since.

i wore mine to kindergarten in new york city. you must be older than i am  (i know you're not). i hated putting them one everyday.

oldlady 77 05-07-2011 07:03 AM

Boy did I hate those flesh colored stockings and that nasty harness thing. What a trip down memory lane, Wear long dresses if I have to dress UP and knee highs now, I.m to lazy to fight with Pantyhose.

my god, the things you guys remember. i wore that also. the teacher made us take them off in the wardrobe (a deep closet - where the boys wouldn't see us) and fluff out our skirts, which our mothers had mashed inside. no pants allowed during school hours. how dumb was that? at the end of the day, we wasted another half hour mashing ourselves back into those things getting tangled in the straps. and the galoshes? is ugly the right word?

Abby'smom 05-07-2011 07:45 AM

I didn't like garter belts but had a long girdle with the hose attachments -- loved it when pantyhose came along
