Just wondering who does a spring house cleanup? How far am I supposed to go- I want to do the closets and dressers, but I really don't want to tackle the basement too! We are getting new windows soon too. Guess that will cause a nice mess to clean as well. I'd rather be quilting!

Pam 04-05-2010 05:27 AM

My theory is that dust never goes away, it just moves around, so why chase it? If I sit at my sewing machine long enough, it will come close and I can suck it up with the vacuum.

grammyp 04-05-2010 05:30 AM

I do closets through out the year (1 per month). We pressure wash the house and windows after the pine trees quit turning everything yellow. My spring cleaning is moving everything and cleaning out the dust bunnies and washing baseboards, door/window frames, sealing the grout in the tile floors, and cleaning the wood floors well (we have oiled pine floors). I really gotta get in the sewing room and do some work there. Got lots of moving and sorting to do.

Maride 04-05-2010 05:50 AM

I clean a little all year round. No major spring cleaning for me. Also, I moved last July and will be moving again this July. I will clean then.

Spring cleaning hit me early this year. My now ex moved out and left most of his "excrement". I've been packing it up & giving it to him. (I just don't want to hear any whining about how I threw his stuff out)

I've been vacuuming and dusting like a mad woman since January. Bought lots of new shelves; going through my library - now I have 4 boxes of books/dvd/tapes for Half-Price Books.

My step-aunt died so we went through her things. I've acquired several of her items so now I have to re-shuffle a little bit.

this is probably more of a reply than you were expecting, but it's been a busy year.

Here I sit at the computer with my 2nd cup of coffee and thinking about beginning some Spring cleaning, but here I sit, LOL!

Seriously, I think I'll clean the inside of the downstairs windows this morning. When DH gets back maybe I can get him to turn on our outside water so I can spray the outside of the windows with that window cleaner that you attached to a hose.

The major Spring Cleaning I always do is steam cleaning the carpets. On the sunnier, warmer days I tackle one or two rooms at a time throughout the house. I don't do 100% of the rooms, but the main traffic areas. My poor steam cleaner has gotten some use over the years! But, our light grey carpet is 11 years old and I'm determined to get some more years out of it!

I love your answer lol

I do 2 major cleanings during the year, one at Christmas and one in the spring. ALL Dishes, pots and pans, silverware, cupboards, windows, walls, and floors.

I do the normal stuff daily, such as wash clothes, sweep, dust, dishes, etc.

I do my ceiling lights and anything glass once a month along with figurines, etc.

The rest I do weekly. Ex Clean the bathroom one day, walls, sink, toilet, counters, tub, etc. Spot clean in between.

The next day I do the same to the kitchen.

Each day I do a different room.

My problem, is with all the dust and cat hair, it doesn't seem like I accomplish anything. I have too much s...!

During the summer, I am out by dawn doing my weeding, sweeping the patio and desk, etc. The rest of the time is mine, except meal times which seems never ending.

This year I'll be doing quite a bit of quilting. I hope!!!

I'm not even going to get into this discussion.

Chasing Hawk 04-05-2010 07:07 AM

I do my spring cleaning in the winter. I clean out everything...closets, drawers, the attic. Dust bunnies shudder when they see me coming. :)

judee0624 04-05-2010 07:08 AM

Me neither! Martha Stweart sent me an email reminder and I deleted it.

I "spring clean" one room a month;EVERYTHING. Then it doesn't seem like such a huge project. Only problem is I always find some new sewing project to work on.

Marjpf 04-05-2010 08:23 AM

I have a housekeeper. Problem solved. Anything she doesn't do, I am very capable of ignoring.

SuzyM 04-05-2010 08:30 AM

You guys are way too funny thanks for making me bust out laughing this morning.

ILove2quilt 04-05-2010 08:34 AM

Spring cleaning? What is that? I did clean all my windows last year and I bet I’ll do it again this year but my GD helps me. I pay her $10.00 a day when she’s here and she loves to clean so we can get the whole house done when she’s here in a couple of days. I even move all the furniture around when we clean. DH doesn’t like it much he can never find anything.
So I guess my answer is no, I really don’t spring clean anymore I just really clean everything once a month now and it’s not so hard that way. Except the normal things like the bathroom and general cleaning you do every day.

Carole3450 04-05-2010 08:36 AM

I clean late spring/early summer. I have to wait for the nasty yellow pine pollen to go away...yuck. It gets everywhere!! Then I do the windows, wash curtains and give each room a good cleaning. However, I must say I get easily distracted during this bit of cleaning because I hate it. A cleaning lady sounds real good to me.

Harmony 04-05-2010 08:45 AM

Still waiting for the spirit to move me! It's all I can do to get the house vacuumed and the bathrooms and kitchen cleaned every week! With 5 cats, I've learned to be a little more tolerant in the cleaning department, because I've come to understand that there is just no way I'm going to win that war unless I have the cats shellacked!

WEll spring cleaning can wait till fall and fall cleaning can wait till spring- get the picture, The dust bunnies are my friends and the best pets! They grow and you don't have to feed them or take them for walks! LOL

TanyaMas 04-05-2010 09:59 AM

My hubby calls my idea of spring cleaning "inspection cleaning" and he HATES it lol
there are 4 levels of clean to me...
#1, kid clean (when i actually get the kids to help and end up having to redo it ALL)
#2, Man clean (same as kid clean, but only have to redo most)
#3, day to day clean (normal clean)
and #4 spring clean (where nothing is safe from being scrubbed, and organized. also when i tend to scrub things with old toothbrushes and throw a ton of stuff out)

but... i ignore attics, garages, and basements since i dont count them as part of the house lol. DH can do them, or they dont get done at all lol

Darlene 04-05-2010 11:34 AM

I need to start closets especially. Move the beds out and then use my Wally to clean ceilings.

Jingle 04-05-2010 12:00 PM

When I was a stay at home Mom 23 yr.s ago My three kids thought I spring cleaned every Thursday or Friday.
I cleaned for each season and every week, did most of it everyday too. Now, I don't really have a set time to clean in detail, do it when the mood strikes. I'll be retiring in June and plan to do a little each day.

rb. 04-05-2010 12:35 PM

I would LIKE to spring clean, but life gets in the way...every year! LOL

Seriously, though, I go through bouts of cleaning, beyond the normal weekly stuff, all through the winter. I'm the world's best purger, and I HATE clutter. It makes it take too long to clean around. If I feel the need to do some cleaning and organizing I watch Hoarders and that gives me the motivation I'm lacking. I feel so bad for those people, living in the clutter and dirt they do. It must be so hard on both their mental and physical health. My brain can't function if I'm surrounded by clutter. I get too confused.

thequilterslink 04-05-2010 02:09 PM

spring cleaning, oh yes, i started it in early MArch.... of 92 and some day i may get it finished.

BellaBoo 04-05-2010 02:33 PM

I'm getting new flooring (no carpet in the house ever again) new windows ( I can open the drapes again!) new countertops and new bathroom fixtures. I'll have a nice new clean house and then it goes on the market. LOL

Gramof6 04-05-2010 06:42 PM

BellaBoo with everything all new, I would not want to move. Stay & enjoy it for goodness sake. LOL

I clean some everyday. Not major stuff but still, it is cleaning. Closets get a thorough pitching out, once or twice a year. I really do good if I am mad. LOL

renee765 04-06-2010 05:33 AM

I can't say that I do spring cleaning. My cleaning follows the TV schedule, instead. Right after watching an episode of Hoarders.

pollyjvan9 04-06-2010 05:49 AM

Hmmmmmmmmmmm..Spring cleaning...what part don't I understand! In springtime I get rejuvenated and start some kind of a project that envolves moving almost everything in some part of the house. This year my son is going to put doors on the side of my bar that faces the dining room. This will force me to clean out all the cabinets because everything will have to be reorganized. I LOVE organizing my fabric stash and quilting supplies and books. I don't call this cleaning or work.

QuiltingGrannie 04-06-2010 06:00 AM

Spring cleaning ????? Thinking about it, but each time I head to the other end of the house my sewing room gets in my way and calls me.
Guess Spring cleaning will have to wait. It's not talking to me as loudly this year as the fabric is.

amandasgramma 04-06-2010 06:10 AM

I have a friend that says "if a corner wants to be cleaned, it'll get out into the middle of the room where it's easier to get to". LOL
Seriously, I DO deep-clean-vacuuming every 2 weeks. Means moving the beds, etc. because of allergies. I LIKE the idea of one room a month...hmmmmm I'm going to try that!

dglvr 04-06-2010 06:19 AM

I live in wheatcountry so its all year round cleaning here.
I do most of my Spring cleaning in the Fall after the wheat fields are done blowing around. I seen a sign 1 day that said
" dirt is just another country accent" I try to remind myself of that.

QBeth 04-06-2010 12:05 PM

Spring? Oh good, time to move my machine into the three season room!
Seriously, ever since the warm days started, we've been fighting an ant problem. :-( The little tough black ones that you have to squish really hard to kill. Get rid of them in the one part of the house, they pop up elsewhere. Now that a few good days are on their way, we'll be spraying foundation. That should do it or Terminex is my next call!!
The worst was when, one night, I took a jar of peanut butter out of the pantry, popped it onto the kitchen counter, and all these little black things fell out. I hadn't turned on a light close by so it was fairly dark.... turned on a light and FREAKED!! Oooooooohhh, nasties everywhere!! RAID to the rescue. Emptied the entire pantry, tossed everything not in a can, sprayed until sopping wet. Did I say OOOOOOOooooooo!!!!

pookie ookie 04-06-2010 12:57 PM

Bug sprays make me vomit so I vacuum ants. Then I make someone else empty the vacuum. :0)

I like the idea of a monthly room. I do weekly but monthly sounds intriguing...

Spring cleaning is great. It's the only time I do all of the windows in one day. And, it puts me in the mood for gardening.

craftybear 04-06-2010 01:26 PM

What is the name of the window cleaner that you can attach to the hose. Have you used it before and do you like it?

Thanks, Karen

I became disabled in October 2008 and since then Spring cleaning is non existent ! If my house wants cleaning, it will have to do it itself...lol
Seriously, I have 4 sisters who take turns coming in every couple of months to clean for me. They are a god send, but I'm learning to live in peace with dust bunnies and a few cobwebs in the corners. I can use a swifter floor duster and can keep the kitchen and bathroom counters and sinks clean so that's enough for me. My new normal! Cleaning is not priority---quilting and living are.
