Its funny that this subject was started. My niece had to move and she could'nt take her cat so she gave it to my brother who has a mobile home on our farm, he told me he got the cat and turned it loose to help keep the field mice out of the house. The other day my DH says "hey, theres a black and white cat on the deck so I went out to meet the new member of our farm <and there are many>. Well it took off like a bolt of lightening headed for my brothers house all of a sudden this red squirrel is hopping across the field chasing it...was the funniest thing I have ever seen they both went running off into the trees behind my brothers house. I figure the squirrel had a nest with babies and went to protect them....have seen plenty of dogs and cats chasing squirrels but have never seen a squirrel chasing a cat.

We feed the squirrels...but not by choice. We have a big
English walnut tree in the backyard, and another not yet quite so big clear on back behind the garage. They strip the
trees every year..we seldom even get one or two nuts. They
would strip our pear tree also if we didn't pick them totally green and ripen in newspapers in the house. So, they
don't seem so cute as they used to be.

We have a little gray ground squirrel that nests under my garden shed. Last spring she had babies, and when they first ventured out, they were white. We had a blast watching them learn to climb up the cherry tree (unfortunately to eat the cherries...) I know they steal much of my fruit and tomatoes, etc. but i don't care. They are just so cute.

Hi Christina I too love the squirrels. I buy deer corn in the fall to put out for them. I also have bird freeder that have the baffle on it keep them off the bird feeders. I have had a sq stomp his foot like thumper the rabbit in the movie Bambi

We are over run with them,but I think these are ground squirrels.
Two years ago we live trap 60 and drove them to a new area.
last year 26.
We just got home from Arizona and have seen one BIG guy.
I hope there is no female around !! NOT or we will have many again this year.: (

Here in central Florida we have a species of squirrel called fox squirrels. They're 2-3 times the size of a regular squirrel, are tan and cream in color and the face resembles a fox (hence the name). They live primarily in the forests in this area and are considered an endangered species. They love to play on the golf courses in our development (which backs up onto a forest) and especially love the women golfers because they have discovered that they carry baggies of snacks in their carts. You would not believe how fast they can open a bag of snacks. They also love to sit by the roads around the golf courses just watching the traffic go by so the development put up the attached traffic signs.

These little babies took a very long ride (3 hours) under the hood of a motorhome. We were all sitting around a campfire in our yard when they started appearing one by one... a total of FIVE! We wondered if their mama might have bailed ship enroute.

Chances are the mama is still where you started from....If you can get them back to there, chances are she will take them back. But don't worry about it, because they are big enough to make it on their own with a little extra food for a short while.

I love watching them trying to figure out how to get in the bird feeders. They always find a way. They are a lot of fun to watch.
