coming from a country that doesnt have squirrels I love them I think they are the cutest and funny critters ever .I dont have bird feeders only squirrel feeders. Is there anyone else who loves these little critters? They give me many hours of laughter watching them and I have been taught how to look after the babies when orphaned

mimom 05-08-2011 04:58 AM

I dont have squirrels, I have rabbits. My old neighborhood had squirrels and feeding them can make them friendlier. We used to have them come right up to us if you wanted them that close or not. My cousin's dog eat a piece of a dried corn cob that a squirrel left in their yard and cost them 2000.00 to get it out of the dogs stomach, the dog nearly died. So you might want to make sure you only use whole cobs stuck to a long nail so the only eat the kernals and dont run off with them.

Ann L 05-08-2011 05:03 AM

They eat all my bird food that is for sure. We have black ones in this neck of the woods. I couldn't keep us with feeding them as they are like teenage boys, eat all and everything in site. :)

cjomomma 05-08-2011 05:09 AM

I used to have a squirrel that I fed everyday for 2 years but she disappeared. She would come to my back door when she was hungry but wouldn't get closer then 5 feet to me. She would run off any other squirrels and birds that would come around.

I had one for a few years that came and watched in the window when I was doing dishes. He cracked me up! He clung to the screen and was always looking so interested. Also had a pet one when I was a kid raised him from tiny. My brother found him one day he had fallen out of the nest. We eventually turned him lose on my dads hunting land.

Murphy 05-08-2011 05:46 AM

Yes, we put out food for squirrels and birds. Fun to watch "Friar Tuck" rule the food bowl. When done then moves so the birds can feed on what they like.

QuiltE 05-08-2011 06:04 AM

I used to feed the birds, and enjoyed it.

Then it became feeding the squirrels and the birds, and I enjoyed it.

Then the squirrels needed to go to Weight Watchers and I couldn't afford the birds and WW for the squirrels.

Sadly the birds have lost out.

If you want some fun ... buy your squirrels a Squngee
... Best. Entertainment. Ever!!!!!!

You'll love it and so will the squirrels!!

Just be careful and wary ... the little varmints can crawl into cracks you won't see and thus into your home. Also, they can tear thru window screen as well as animal proof screening and come into your home. (yes, I have learned that lesson and now have heavy steel screen on my kitchen windows ... not as pretty, but at least I don't live quite so much in fear of their invasion)

No longer do I care for squirrels ... though can appreciate the fun you have in watching and feeding them.

sandyo 05-08-2011 06:31 AM

what country are you coming from? Our Germany students just loved all the squirrels because they do have them.

great aunt jacqui 05-08-2011 06:38 AM

always loved squirrels. Sammy used to come to the slider and be hand fed through a small crack by me. He was big and gray.

Now here in NH we have the most adorable small red/brown squirrels. none tha I can tell have become regulars. I throw out
stale bread or cereal for them. The bird feeders are in the front
so far they have not found them, they stay in the woods out back.

On the other hand.... my neice hates them. when she was small they seemed to chase her. One sat on the overhang of door and peed on her as she went out!!!!
So now every christmas she gets squirrel ornaments or tee shirts or feeders, placemats etc. she does not think this is funny. LOL we do!  :D :-D

Do.Not.Like.Squirrels.

Neighbor overfeeds the squirrels. We are overrun with squirrels. We have squirrels trails in our yard, where they have worn away all the grass. They take one bite out of every tomato, even if we leave water out for them. Yesterday there were 14 squirrels just in our small suburban front yard, cavorting and having 'fun'. Guess we'll have even more squirrels soon.

Neighbor also feeds birds. Can't leave a car out in the driveway for even a few minutes without it getting 'dropped on'.

Guess I don't really dislike squirrels. I just dislike the quantity of squirrels we have, and the damage they do.

christina d 05-08-2011 11:20 AM

Iam from Australia

christina d 05-08-2011 11:21 AM

we have a lage back yard 16 acres so the squirrels are no problem they do nest in our barn but that OK by us

Scissor Queen 05-08-2011 12:42 PM

Squirrels can be very destructive. My friends that live in Denver had to call the "wildlife removal specialists" and have the squirrels removed from their attic. They caught a dozen squirrels in 3 days. They chew tv cables and tear up patio chair cushions for thier nests.

Linda B 05-08-2011 01:56 PM

We do not like squirrels, either. They are having a feast on our redwood deck to the point of being unbelievably destructive. We used to enjoy watching them on the bird feeder, but now we do everything we can to keep them away from feeders and especially the house.

Destructive! you bet! We live on almost four acres. Many years ago when my mother was alive, she took a one week vacation. After a few days I was checking her house and found some squirrels had gotten in the attic and chewed through the drywall and got into the bathroom and laundry room. What a mess!!! Funny though. My husband and I closed up the entrances they made and cleaned the place before she got back. She was not at all surprised since she said they had tried it before and she surprised them.

SuzanneG 05-08-2011 03:23 PM

Well, they can be destructive and I have a few half-chewed bird feeders to prove it. :D But I still love the little critters. I find if they can easily (and I do mean easily!) get to the birdseed in the feeders, they just eat and leave the feeder alone. They are voracious eaters, but we enjoy them so much, it's okay with us. :D :D

It's nice to meet some folks who enjoy them also. I understand why some try to discourage them from getting to their feeders, but we have learned to enjoy and embrace them and their funny little antics. :D

frugalfabrics 05-08-2011 03:29 PM

I think they are cute and don't mind watching them from afar...my sister on the other hand dislikes them because they continue to chew the electrical wiring from underneath her car. FYI, they enjoy Ford Focus wiring only...lol. The Chevy, VW, and Toyota are not to their liking! Four times they've completely chewed out the wiring from the Ford, while not having an interest in any of the other vehicles.

bluteddi 05-08-2011 08:23 PM

I love the squirrels.... hubby loves the birds... well as most of u know.. the squirrels kept eatin gall the bird food. So, DH decided he would put a feeder out just for teh swuirrels, so that they would stay away from his birds feeders..
I LOL at him.... " like thats gonna work!!??"" well, by George worked.!!!

vivoaks 05-09-2011 04:33 AM

I HATE squirrels. They have managed to get into our attic (we're still looking for holes) and they are destroying the house! I have little footprints in the dust on the piano, and one ate half a stick of butter that was sitting on the kitchen table! It's a tiny pine squirrel, so is too big for a mouse trap, but too small for a rat trap. I want it OUT of my house!!! It actually fell down between the 2x4's in the wall, couldn't get back up, so proceeded to chew a hole through the wall in a closet to get out! Now I can't get it out of the house!

debbieoh 05-09-2011 05:35 AM

They may be cute but can be very destructive. be very careful. One example is one completely ate thru the phone and cable wiring at my sons. He also had feeders for the, had no phone or tv for almost 2 weeks till all the wiring was replaced. plus the cost of fixing the wiring that went into the house wasn't cheap. Thank heavens most the companoies had to replace.

rita222 05-09-2011 06:23 AM

I not only do not like squirrels but I HATE them. I live in a pecan orchard and we must have millions of them they chewed through an electric wire coming to the house and caused two 110 volt wires to touch and become 220 volts coming into the house and when the wires touched everything that happen to be "on" was fried. I had to replace my freezer, lamps and other electric appliances such as toaster, etc. they are a menace and not as "cute" as one would think. there have even been reports of them chewing the wires under car hoods causing problems. you would think the nuts from the trees would be enough for them, NOT.

Minnisewta 05-09-2011 06:46 AM

I put food outside our patio door all winter. The cats love to watch them, I call it Cat TV.

AnitaSt 05-09-2011 07:24 AM

We have huge live oak trees and too many squirrels. They are destructive to potted plants but we've been discouraging that with coffee grounds and/or cayenne pepper on top of the soil. But I do love to watch them scamper and jump...and our weiner dogs make great sport of chasing them but never catching them.

I used to hang dried corn cobs for them...screw an eye-bolt into the end of the cob then suspend it from a length of chain looped around a tree branch. Put it far enough out on the branch that it hangs clear of the tree...that way they have to work to get to it and you will see some antics for sure! One squirrel finally learned to pull the chain up until he could grab the cob then he would hold it and chomp away!

I wouldn't use the cobs now that I have dogs...mimom's story is a good lesson!

Chasing Hawk 05-09-2011 07:30 AM

I think our dogs ate one last week. I found a patch of fur in their pen.

grannypat7925 05-09-2011 07:44 AM

We have lots of them around here. My sister has quite a collection of them and always looking for another different one. We watch their antics a lot in our back yard.

linhawk 05-09-2011 07:46 AM

They chew wires, wood etc. They eat the bird seed, my apricots and blackberries etc. Also bird eggs I am told.
We have a massive relocation project. Trap them and take them to the lake where they have water, oak trees and people that feed them. They are happy and so am I.

Linda - K. 05-09-2011 08:11 AM

I love squirrels! We have grey ones and Douglas Fir tree squirrels also. The DF ones are faster than the grey ones and quite a bit smaller. I love watching them all. Also like to watch the rabbits in our yard. One neighbor hates squirrels (rats with fuzzy tails) and complains about them. He doesn't realize we feed them to attract them here! The other neighbor says rabbits are only coyote food!

milikaa1 05-09-2011 10:00 AM

I love squirrels but have not seen one since last year, they all died in our area, I miss them alot, they make me laugh and smile.

raksmum 05-09-2011 10:17 AM

I know they can be very destructive but I still like them. We had one that we trained to eat out of our hands. She would sit on our laps, take her peanut, run and hide it and then return for more. She would go on for hours doing this if you didn't quit. She would also run up your leg and into your pocket to get her peanut. She disappeared one day and haven't seen her since. I'm guessing a bigger critter got her. Funny, how I still check to see if she might be back

igorsews 05-09-2011 10:22 AM

I, too, have them! However, they sit in my apple tree, take a few bites of my developing apples, sit, smile, and wave at me as they throw the remaining apple to the ground!@#! I will win this year!!!

Carrie 05-09-2011 10:26 AM

I think squirrels are cute somewhere else. Stopped feeding the birds because of them and yes they do like tomatoes. My sister had to have her van rewired because of them. Cute but not fun to have around.

I think they're so cute and very smart, BUT they can be little stinkers!!!! Some can be very destructive and just downright naughty!!

I thought you might like to see a couple of pics I found online!

Oh, and by the way watch out for those cute little chipmunks!!! Talk about destructive!!!!! Those little buggers can be a real menace!! I used to feed peanuts (in the shells) to the squirrels and bluejays. Well, the chipmunks qould also feast on them -- or so I thought!!! One of the little critters crawled through my dryer vent and piled up peanuts under the drum of the dryer!!! I couldn't figure out why my clothes were very warm but very moist! Called a repairman, and he asked my ex-husband for a little container. Stange request he thougt, but he got a container. The repairman started filling the container with PEANUTS!!!!! The pile had gotten so tall that it had stopped the drum from turning!!!!!!!! First thing I did was put a screen on the exterior dryer vent and then immediately STOPPED feeding anyone peanuts! I then got a live trap, caught about 20 in one summer and took them off to the woods near a community college! At least they could get a college education and maybe give up their criminal way!! Ph, and the charge for the "repair"????? About $125!!!!!!!!!

We feed birds so we have squirrels trying to get into the feeders. I read an article online that said if you mounted your bird feeder on top of a 6" PVC pipe that the squirrels can't climb it. Just be sure not to put it under an overhang or tree where they can climb and drop down on top of it. Haven't had a squirrel make it up the pipe yet. It is really funny to watch them try though. Helovesme 05-09-2011 12:53 PM

NOT a fan of the squirrels. One year they decided to chew up my hammock and had a nice fluffy warm nest that winter. When I decided NOT to get another hammock, they ate the neighbor's rug from her back porch. The next year, those little boogers untied, yes I said untied the bandana that was wrapped around the cowboy boot bird house and used it!

I hear you. They are cute to watch but they eat all the fruit off my trees , get in the gardenand and eat stuff . We also had a pair of racoons take up residence in our attic. Dh bought a couple of cage traps and relocated them out in the country (we back up to a golf course so we have lots of "urban wildlife" ) Don't know if it is legal to relocate ,but they would have just tried to get back in and they can be VERY determined. No way could we kill them we are such animal lovers

At my former house we had a squirrel feeder outside the masterbath window. It was a lot of fun watching them at the feeder while in the bathroom. Did have one that found his way down the chimney of the fireplace and then ran back to the bathroom. All we had to do was open the window and he went out to start eating his sunflower seeds. I brake for squirrels.
