My neighbor has bird feeders. The number of birds that come to eat is astounding, so is the number of squirrels. Neighbor entertains me though, she greases the pole and the little critters slide right back down. The grease only lasts a day or so. But it's still fun to watch.

I just loved reading this topic! We are bird/squirrel watchers too...got some great ideas! We have a bird feeder that looks like a porch swing, and it hangs on the fence...so funny to see a squirrel eating out of it, his own personal lounge! Too funny! We have started putting corn in it just for him so he will leave the bird feeders alone!

i gave up on that one.. so when my 9 yr old made a squirrel feeder at cub scouts when just started feeding them to now they leave the bird feeder alone.they are smart little things

if I have squirrels out back I slip out the side door and tell the dog kitty kitty, and the chase is on. the squirrels usually get away once she had one in her mouth but that did not last long, now I really don't think there is anything you can do to prevent the critters from eating the suet. I have 5 feeders out back that I fill I have only caught those creatures twice and i let the dog out it keeps them a way for a spell. now the bad part is I feed the feral cats and I captured one who I call kitty kitty he lives indoors so far all has gone well.

Shoot the suckers and make yourself a nice big pot of brunswick stew!!!!!

We smeared vasoline on the entire pole. Was funny as heck watching the squirrel trying to walk with the stuff on his feet. Another time we watched a squirrel trying to get seed from a hanging, upside down bowl covered, squirrel proof feeder. The little bugger would jump a good four feet, hit the bowl, slide off and hit the ground. Shake his head and go back time after time. After about 7 tries, he managed to actually hang on and get seed.

We bought 2 squirrel proof bird feeders, they work the squirrels dont even try anymore.

I've heard Vasaline on the pole works. Never tried myself though.

Thanks for your input. My hubby did spray the pole with a silicone spray. Only stopped them for a little while. When the temps. are below freezing and the pole has frost on it, that, too, stops them until the pole thaws. Even though they are pesky, they do provide Winter entertainment!!

Thank you, everybody. Sounds like the problem is universal. Those little critters must love to watch us humans try and 'stump' them!!
