Yesterday morning I was out early and saw a sign for a Neighborhood Garage Sale in an upscale subdivision. Oh, goody...the neighborhood isn't huge and easy to drive. Well, first stop was 1 table of books, 1 bookcase of dvds and 1 small rack of men's clothes. Hmm, I did end up buying some season sets of Criminal Minds and Law & Order SVU.

Next stop was 3 tables of glassware, next stop was 2 tables of nothing, next stop was a few stuffed animals....are you getting the picture yet?????????????

It was more trouble to put up the stuff than any money the seller would make!!!!

Oh, one lady did comment when I ask about fabric that she had a big bag of fabric but she just didn't want to bring it out!!!

Oh well...

Airwick156 10-16-2011 12:07 PM

Bummer it wasn't a very good yard sale. We didn't go saling much this year in fact I think we only went to two or three. :(

QuiltnNan 10-16-2011 12:08 PM

too bad

blueangel 10-16-2011 12:18 PM

Bummer

Painiacs 10-16-2011 01:31 PM

Her loss! Maybe she just wanted to socialize??

Candace 10-16-2011 01:43 PM

Funny, I've been to a few garage sales like that too! I mean, just donate the small bag of stuff to Goodwill! I don't get it.

ptquilts 10-16-2011 01:47 PM

I see a lot that are just Tupperware and baby things. You can usually spot those kind from the car.

athomenow 10-16-2011 01:49 PM

I've been to those yard sales! People sitting outside with one little table of things that I probably would have thrown away. Maybe they're bored!

deedum 10-16-2011 02:10 PM

I just pack it up and drop it off at goodwill. They are happy to get it and I am happy to give it. A win-win. I never understand where people get there time to set up a sale with just a few items. I had a neighbor that did that.

SherriB 10-16-2011 02:25 PM

I love Criminal Minds and would love to find a set of DVDs at a yard sale! I usually don't bother to stop if there is only a few items.

clem55 10-16-2011 02:54 PM

neighborhood yard sales are very popular around here. Our subdivision has one every June, and the cars that drive around looking and buying is amazing. I've never had a sale, just don't have the energy to get things ready and haul it outside, and then to sit and wait. I just box up what I have and take it to GoodWill.

lalaland 10-16-2011 03:31 PM

I went to a neighborhood sale yesterday too but there were so few people in the neighborhood participating, and they were so spread out, I finally just gave up.

jaciqltznok 10-16-2011 03:44 PM

we have those here..you spend more $$ on gas driving around looking for a GOOD sale..that it is just not worth it any more...

Stitchnripper 10-16-2011 04:18 PM

I went to a neighborhood garage sale like that yesterday! I guess people wanted to be part of it, but, put out the oddest things, like old margarine tubs. I did see a vintage sewing machine in a cabinet but the machine was rusted and was missing the shuttle/bobbin case. I couldn't get the needle to go up and down and they wanted $70 for it.

Jingle 10-16-2011 05:36 PM

I go to a store and buy whatever fabrics I want. Anything I have that is not used or wanted get taken to Goodwill. Yard sales are not my thing.

3incollege 10-16-2011 05:41 PM

I have never had a garage sale. My stuff goes to Salvation Army or St. Vincent DePaul.

Nanamoms 10-16-2011 06:22 PM

Another great deal I did get was a "new" hand held Homedics battery operated massager...has 4 nodules and lighted. My big one has been broken for a while so this one is great...a big whopping $1.00 for it! :)

My neighbor/friend wants to have one together but I'm not sure I have the energy to get ready for it. But I guarantee that mine would be more than one or 2 tables!

HummerGardenCrafts 10-16-2011 06:27 PM

I love yard and garage sales. I saw plenty. But didn't get to stop at any. I did hit some thrift stores while in TN this week. Let me tell you, I thought they were suppose to cheap. I don't think so! Stuff was high in those thrift stores. Even the Good Will was high!

damaquilts 10-17-2011 04:36 AM

I hit one garage sale this weekend because it was on my normal walk with Andy. I ended up with an XL Memory Stor for $5 and a thread rack with the large spindles for $1 . I stopped at a few more and didn't buy anything they were the ones like your talking about. But at one I did find someone who builds furniture. Put his number away for later. And at the first one I found out her husband is a dentist and gets these buckets with dental stuff in. I am going back sometime and getting some for dying fabric. Also hit a estate sale and missed out on a bunch of free sewing stuff but did come home with a hand full of free picture frames and two botanical pictures in frames for $10

kacklebird 10-17-2011 05:26 AM

I LOVE yard sales. I have bought great things and got some steals of a deal on many things.

AprilG 10-17-2011 05:46 AM

The weather here has finally co-operated. The Garage Sales are in full swing! Went out to a neighborhood sale Friday. I can always find small stuffed toys for my dogs of course. I did find two "La Newborn" dolls for me to reborn (re-paint to make look real) and a lovely framed picture of some antique dolls (I collect dolls). Oh, yeah, a pair of snowman Salt & Pepper shakers (I also collect S&P shakers). Quite a haul for me. And quite a haul for my husband to bring in the house!

Caswews 10-17-2011 06:37 AM

When we lived in Denver, I would go to the upscale yard sales in Castle Rock and the more affluent areas of town with my youngest daughter. We would find jeans for the gd's in great shape some with the tags on for pennies. Once she needed a lamp and we found 4 really nice ones that had hardly been used for 10.00. One time we found in a bin of jeans material, dear daughter bought it and made a couple of quilts out of it( the cost was 2.00 for about 20 yards of material, lucky her for sure !!

Glenda m 10-17-2011 06:57 AM

The DH and I mostly do what we call 'drive by' sales. We drive by..I look if nothing catches my eye or its clothes and baby things we just keep going, hence..drive by. LOL

Slow2Sew 10-17-2011 07:33 AM

I went to a sale Friday afternoon that advertised "Tons of fabric." I got there a little after 2:00 and they were already closed for the day. Just figured that was because I reeeeally didn't need any more fabric anyway.

anniesews 10-17-2011 07:41 AM

Not much fun there.

Twisted Quilter 10-17-2011 07:47 AM

Last garage sale I went to only had a couple tables of kids clothing. On my way out of the garage I saw storage bins w/lids and asked the priced. She said they're dusty, so 25 cents each! Yep, I bought all 4.

CAS49OR 10-17-2011 10:37 AM

This thread reminds me of a pet peeve. People who leave their garage sale signs posted way after the sale is over! So I waste gas and time looking for the sale, and it was two weeks ago. I think that should be considered littering. I also thing it brings extra noise, traffic, etc to their neighborhood.

I have figured out the yard sale lingo: "HUGE sale" means it is going to be a lot of baby clothes and toys (not interested). "Estate Sale" means there might be some good things there but usually it's old stinky stuff the kids don't know what to do with, and you've seen this stuff a zillion times before. The best sales are "Moving Sale". That is where you get nice items at a good price because they are moving, and don't want to pay to haul them, and don't know what else to do with them.

CAS49OR 10-17-2011 10:39 AM

I also wonder why the sales are frequently on Friday/Saturday. Most people are working Friday, and by the time you get there Saturday the good stuff is gone!

Signs that are obsolete is one of my pet peeves, too! I think that should be a finable offense - it's a safety hazard.

Signs that are too small to read from the car are also a safety hazard!

CAS49OR 10-17-2011 11:16 AM

Yes, too true! Stop to see what the tiny letters say and cause a traffic hazzard!

As to the previous, why invite people to drive around your neighborhood if nothing is going on? Arrrggghh!

Outdated signs are an eyesore, too. I always make sure to pick all mine up after the sale is over.

Oh, one of the garage sellers was ready to pack up at 9:30...makes it even crazier to set up!!

I've also decided that the homeowners in the more exclusive neighborhoods just pay someone to come in and declutter and have it hauled away to Goodwill! The thrift stores around here are high too or such a mess, I don't even want to go in. I took some bags of things to our local Gateway and it has to be dropped off at the warehouse entrance. I could see inside and there was stuff just piled to the rafters (2 stories high) in a pyramid shape. I wondered who actually went thru that stuff to put out for sale. Made me not want to donate to Gateway anymore!!

I went to a few yard sales this weekend. Most of them are not in the area, but I have tracked down some nice ones. I bought a quilt, two dolls, an old rabbit made of leather and dressed in a dressed. But in one upper class area, the only thing the people had out was stuff that I would have put straight into the trash can. No one that stopped even touched it.

I was wondering if that was the case. Or do they just want to join in? They may figure better than nothing.

But I don't get it.

Sandra in Minnesota 10-17-2011 04:05 PM

That's kinda why I quit garage saleing. Costs more for gas and wasn't worth it.

madamekelly 10-17-2011 08:18 PM

I don't mind those too much unless I have to go way out of town to get to them. The ones that drive me crazy are what we call MSIG. (My s--T is GOLD) Everything is priced as if it is in an upscale boutique, and the ones where everything is covered in a layer of filth. Do they think we want to touch it any more than they do??????? I have found some real gems in little sales.

auniqueview 10-17-2011 11:12 PM

The ones with no price tags just annoy the crap out of me. Stick a tag on it, will ya? I'll be happy to negotiate, if you want, but let's see a starting point. I get tired of having to ask, What are you wanting for this.

I did buy a display case, no price, of course. He said $8, I said how about $5. He said $7, I countered $5, He said $6, I countered $5. He sold it for $5. Hmmm. Next time, put a price tag on it, lol. Made me stubborn.

Annaquilts 10-17-2011 11:19 PM

Ugh not worth the effort. what happens here a lot too is a big deal about fabric and when I get there it is nothing or some over priced antique linens. They caught on we are looking for fabric I think.

ptquilts 10-18-2011 03:29 AM

I hate when they have a sign pointing down a side street, and they don't say how FAR down the street it is. One block, one mile, whatever. And you don't even know if the sign is current.

I totally agree. I went to some yard sales over my lunch hour but the one I really scored at was 2 doors down on Sat morning. Orphan quilt blocks, and some quilt tops. I also got a large vintage quilt top that needs a lot of tlc for $5. Someone had washed it and the person who pieced it didn't use 1/4 in seams, plus one of the fabrics shredded. I am been sitting in front of the tv every night, tearing out the bad fabric and replacing it with vintage fabric. The blocks probably started out at 2.5 inches but really are about 2.25 inchs. Once the seams are stable I am going to put it on my quilting frame and quilt it. What a shame, I felt so sorry for it when I saw it, that I had to buy it.

mshollysd 10-18-2011 04:11 AM

When it comes to the signs for garage sale, when we have one, we have a stand that has a huge white posterboard on it saying garage sale-----> on both sides and put it at the corner (we asked our neighbor if it was ok). This comes from when we were farmers and put stuff at farmers market. We used two of the push down frames attached at the top to make a hinge. Then when the end of the day, walked down and picked it up. No other signs to take down.
