I asked my 17 year old son if he knew what oly,oly oxen free meant and he said yes,it happens when you call out for hide and seek. I guess I did well.

CJOMOMMA I remember all of those things. I grow up on a dairy farm. My brothers and sisters and I had so much fun.. When we get togather we talk about the old time as what we call it. There is 7 of us our children look at us like we are all crazy. But we did have alot of fun. It sure is not like today. The kid are either playing video games or on their computers..No jump rope or donkey, kick ball, hide insec we were outside playing all the time...

i can add to these memory's How about spoolie curlers, orpetticoats you had to pin up because the elastic broke or sprinkleing your laundry wiht a pop bottle and a cap wiht holes in it. and we walked to school no mater how far it was. That's just what ya did back then.and you could get a nice size bag of penny cany for mere penny's. i could go on and on.nice memories

I am so glad everyone seems to be enjoying these memories. I remember a few of them, well maybe more than a few. LOL. I wish my kids could experience my childhood, the freedom and all the fun playing outside til the sun went down. My folks never had to worry about where I was or someone snatching me up.
It is a crying shame that todays world has gotten so bad. |
Thanx for the memories. Those were the good ol' days
|
Yep, I remember those things too. I remember going to our neighborhood gas station (I lived in Chicago) and got a "tiger tail" and "tiger cup" from Corky, the attendant. We had a lemonade stand in front of our house for people who were going to Wrigley Field for a Cubs game. We would go to our local A & P store and collect Green stamps and look through the catalog for hours making our wish lists. Oh, what wonderful days those were. It's sad that progress has progressed to today!

I remember those. Funny you mentioned war, the card game. I taught my 2 DGD's to play. The little one was playing with her DGF (aka Papa) and while he went to the bathroom, she rearranged the cards so she would win!

I had one heck of a time trying to explain to my granddaughter, age 6, what a record album was. We were at a restaurant that was decorated with the 50's style and they had records on the wall. I finally just told her it was like a great big CD. Love all these memories!

You don't remember all that stuff! you don't look THAT old!
However, I DO remember all that stuff! |
I owned a '57 Chevy. It was 6 yrs old when I got it. I sold it for $350 in about 1967 or 8. The guy who bought it used it for driving around his fields to change the irrigation pipes. I bought it back in 1973 for $60. My husband fixed the transmission, redid the whole inside and painted it. Sold it for $50. Wish I had it back. It was pinkish grey with a white top.
|
OOPS! ! ! Sold that 57 for $500. haha
|
ahhh thanks for the walk down memory lane.....I think lol...suddenly feeling old now lol as I remember just about everything mentioned. :-)
|
I also remember all of these. Times were simpler then. You could walk to school and not be afraid of being kidnapped. You got a spanking if you did wrong and your parents weren't carted off to jail. Those were the days. Don't forget prized in the cracker jack boxes. Thanks for the memories
|
What a walk down memory lane - Thank you
|
Aahhh, the good old days when life was so much simpler.

TO... TNUTNO..and CJOMOMMA
Well, I did grow up during that time. Yes ,the memories are something else . Only difference for me is that I ALMOST did get kidnapped . I can remember it like it was 2 seconds ago . I had to walk 2 1/2 blocks to school . Half way down the last 1/2 a block my would be kidnapper stopped his car next to me...btw...I was in the 4th grade....as he was pulling me thru the window of his car the crossing guard heard me screaming and came running , blowing her whistle. Well I got pushed out onto the ground and he took off. I was left with a bruised bum , a very frightened mind and a wonderful story to tell grandchildren . Now, all I need is the grandchildren . lol Believe me ....I gave You the short version |
remember buying cereal for the toy inside, and cracker jax had great toys, not plastic junk. cerealwas 50C a box, that was the expensive one, and boys had paper routs after school

And summer vacation seemed to go on forever! Now it seems years fly by faster than a summer vacation did back then. Guess money wasn't the only thing that went further back then. And when you saw a group of kids, it wasn't cause for worry.

Yes I remember-Getting the neighbor ladies old high heels, stomping on coke or beer cans and walking on them.Skating with skates that took a key as fast as I could down a steep hill in san franciso.Falling and crying all the way home and Mom was their with a band aid and cookies.(she wasn't at work Dad made enough to support all 6 of us.),Walking in the neighborhood in the summer and hearing the ball game playing on lots of radios. Hearing Dad say he was going to go watch the radio show-fibber magee and molly. You always watched the radio then.Going to the saturday movie with mom and getting free dishes, watching 2 movies and cartoons and even a news real for 10 cents.candy was 5 cents. There was lots of penny candy at the 5 and 10 cent stores.Sunday supper, afternoon flying kites. It was a better time because families were closer and neighbors were friends.Like Carol Burnette and Bob Hope used to sing thanks for the memories.Mary

OMGoodness that brought back most wonderful memories !! The dishes in the laundry detergent and Trading stamps .. OMGoodness .. wow!!
|
Yes, I remember well. I especially remember having to lick those stupid green stamps in the books and never getting anything for me. I had a boyfriend with a '57 Chevy. Was so upset because he had to sell it when he went to Viet Nam.
Thanks for the memories. |
I had forgotten those things. Skates. I loved them and wore the key on a string around my neck like a gold medal. And the cans. I was so upset that Dad took one of my skates to make a scooter for my little brother. So I got back at him and ripped his scooter apart and had a skate board. (Not like those of today) A "real" skate board. Amazing what you can do with a 2x4 and a can of spray paint.
