This would have been nice but the pictures didn't attach, Sorry.
Take a moment and step back into a kinder and gentler time, the year I was born. How's This For Nostalgia? All the girls had ugly gym uniforms? It took three minutes for the TV to warm up? Nobody owned a purebred dog? When a quarter was a decent allowance? You'd reach into a muddy gutter for a penny? Your Mom wore nylons that came in two pieces? You got your windshield cleaned, oil checked, and gas pumped, without asking, all for free, every time? And you didn't pay for air? And, you got trading stamps to boot? Laundry detergent had free glasses, dishes or towels hidden inside the box? It was considered a great privilege to be taken out to dinner at a real restaurant with your parents? They threatened to keep kids back a grade if they failed. . and they did it! When a 57 Chevy was everyone's dream car...to cruise, peel out, lay rubber or watch submarine races, and people went steady? No one ever asked where the car keys were because they were always in the car, in the ignition, and the doors were never locked? Lying on your back in the grass with your friends? and saying things like, 'That cloud looks like a... '? Playing baseball with no adults to help kids with the rules of the game? Stuff from the store came without safety caps and hermetic seals because no one had yet tried to poison a perfect stranger? And with all our progress, don't you just wish, just once, you could slip back in time and savor the slower pace, and share it with the children of today. When being sent to the principal's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited the student at home? Basically we were in fear for our lives, but it wasn't because of drive-by shootings, drugs, gangs, etc. Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat! But we survived because their love was greater than the threat. . . .as well as summers filled with bike rides, Hula Hoops, and visits to the pool, and eating Kool-Aid powder with sugar. Didn't that feel good, just to go back and say, 'Yeah, I remember that'? I am sharing this with you today because it ended with a Double Dog Dare to pass it on. To remember what a Double Dog Dare is, read on. And remember that the perfect age is somewhere between old enough to know better and too young to care. Send this on to someone who can still remember Howdy Doody and The Peanut Gallery, the Lone Ranger, The Shadow knows, Nellie Bell , Roy and Dale, Trigger and Buttermilk. How Many Of These Do You Remember? Candy cigarettes Wax Coke-shaped bottles with colored sugar water inside. Soda pop machines that dispensed glass bottles. Coffee shops with Table Side Jukeboxes. Blackjack, Clove and Teaberry chewing gum. Home milk delivery in glass bottles with cardboard stoppers. Newsreels before the movie. Telephone numbers with a word prefix...( Yukon 2-601). Party lines. Peashooters. Hi-Fi's & 45 RPM records. 78 RPM records! Green Stamps. Mimeograph paper. The Fort Apache Play Set. Do You Remember a Time When? Decisions were made by going 'eeny-meeny-miney-moe'? Mistakes were corrected by simply exclaiming, 'Do Over!'? 'Race issue' meant arguing about who ran the fastest? Catching The Fireflies Could Happily Occupy An Entire Evening? It wasn't odd to have two or three 'Best Friends'? Having a Weapon in School meant being caught with a Slingshot? Saturday morning cartoons weren't 30-minute commercials for action figures? 'Oly-oly-oxen-free' made perfect sense? Spinning around, getting dizzy, and falling down was cause for giggles? The Worst Embarrassment was being picked last for a team? War was a card game? Baseball cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle? Taking drugs meant orange - flavored chewable aspirin? Water balloons were the ultimate weapon? If you can remember most or all of these, Then You Have Lived!!!!!!! Pass this on to anyone who may need a break from their 'Grown-Up' Life . . I Double-Dog-Dare-Ya! |
Thank you
I remember...
I know some of the things you mentioned but the rest....we'll maybe i'm not THAT old yet! :)
Thank for sharing this. |
Oh boy do I remember and what a ilfe it was.
I guess I am showing my age when I say I remember most of those things and I tell my kids all the time that I grew up in a much better time. By the way, they still sell the Popeye's candy cigarettes in a store close to home.
I remember many of these... and what wonderful memorys they are..
I remember all of it well! They were great times. Thank you for the memories!
Ah, yes, I remember well.
And as for the Laundry detergent that had free glasses, dishes or towels hidden inside the box, well, depending on what your Mom needed, you learned to pick up the box and guess, simply by the weight, what it contained. Glasses were heavier than towels, but some of the dishes were about the same weight. So sometimes it was a guessing game and no one could tell what the prize was, the needed extra cup, or a cereal bowl like the 17 of them you already had. |

Don;t we all wish that times were still like that.
I remembersome of the laundry soap had kids books in them. It was so fun to "find" them!
My first boyfriend drove a '57 Chevy.
Thanks for the memories.....also remember many others and I do believe the simplier times were the very best.
Oh, yes, how I remember them! The wonderful days!
I am 45 and still remember most of those things. I didn't realize then, but I had a wonderful childhood and equally wonderful parents.
I remember all of those and more! My DH reminded me the other day that when he was in grade school, it was a common practice for little boys to carry a pocket knife. No one thought anything of it. Can you imagine what would happen now?
It's a different world we live in now. |
it was a simpler time back then with a lot less to worry about.
i remember all of them too. i also remember really high metal slides, teeter-totters and playing jacks on the sidewalk during recess AND boys & girls had separate playgrounds. and girls couldn't wear jeans to school unless it was very, very cold and you wore them under your dress, and union suits and long stockings, ugh!
Oh! That sure brought back memories. Yes happy ones.
I remember. Anybody remember hay rides to the river? Girls were only allowed to wear dresses to school. A train trip to a football game that was a blast all the way there and back. No drinking, no drugs, just lots of jokes and laughs.
:D I am old because I remember all of these. :D I also remember Mom buying boxes of Oatmeal because dishes were also in the box. I think they were green glass. About the only worry back then was how to stretch a paycheck. Well many are in that situation now. And look at all of the other worries now days? Some days I do wish we could go back to these more simple times. Kids playing outside all over the place until dark or after & was safe.
I'm happy to say I lived during those times! Those were the days!
Those were the days. These children now days don't know what they missed growing up back then.
And I have a few more to add to the list.
Waiting for a school at the corner of the street without your parents to "drop you off" or "pick you up". Metal dashboards and no seat belts. Going for a bike ride to see your friends and they lived 2 miles away. When jelly came in glasses - and you collected them. I still have the dictionary my mom collected (one letter per week) from the supermarket. Oh, how about the cable cars with the sparks and taxi cabs with those little fold down stools to sit on. Just had to add a few things. The other day I was lecturing about "positive transfer" a term used to explain learning one thing can "transfer" to other new behaviors. Well, I made the mistake of using my example of learning to drive on a standard transmittion (on the column) It took 3 minutes to explain that the shift lever was in fact on the steering column! I think some still don't believe me. |

There is an online candy store here in Ohio that sells the candy from yesteryear!!! You can get candy from the 50's, 60's etc. They even go back farther on some things. Last Christmas I send a big bag to my brother in Texas and his daughter could not believe some of the stuff we used to eat. He got a big kick out of it and said it took him back to memory lane.
I remember all of those. I still have the dishes and glasses. My mother and grandmother saved them to make a large set to give me as a wedding gift 40 years ago.
Yes,I remember and I sure would like for it to be that way again.
Nabisco Shredded Wheat had little cards with American Indian folk lore and crafts. I loved them!
I remember everything except the Nabisco thing -- I never liked cold cereal. Shredded Wheat was something my grandmother ate. I always liked Captain Midnight and Froggy, as well.
My brothers and I agree that discipline was a good thing. |
I'd settle for just a few years ago when my kid still thought I was cool enough to hang out with. :(
I remember most of those things, but I love my cell phone too.
A 57 Chevy is still a dream car but it takes an absolute fortune to buy one. I saw one on the Barrett Jackson auction for for over $100,000.
We left on our honeymoon in a brand new 57' chevy. It was so pretty. I remember the jOys of listening to radio long before TV.
I started reading and couldn't stop. I remember everything in the list. Instead of eating Kool-Aid with sugar (maybe it hadn't been invented yet), we ate something called Lik-m-aid in a pouch that looked just like Kool-Aid. I probably didn't spell it correctly, but it has been a very long time ago.
Yup...I remember...fondly!!! I tried to give my boys a little bit of that when they were growing up. We were fortunate to live in a rural setting that I COULD let them ride their bikes to their friends'. And we had a small "corner store" that still carried penny candy. Not quite as inexpensive as when I was a kid, but fun for them all the same.
And I agree with catrancher...although they were "better" times, I also like my cell phone!!! LOL I can connect to all you wonderful people no matter where I am!! Patti |
Oh my, what a wonderful trip I've just had by reading that list, the memories it brings back. It makes me wonder what our children will get nostalgic about in 50 or so years time when they look back.
I remember those times!!
