Target Data Breach

Wow, woke up this morning to have my husband tell me that it is all over the news about Target's data breach and how credit/card info has been compromised. From what I understand, the period involved is November 27 through December 15 (or December 6 depending on which news source.) We did purchase something from Target but luckily paid cash.

We're almost now to the point of always trying to use cash (except for online purchases, which are kind of few these days.)

I saw the news report and they are investigating if there was insider involvement.

Quilting Grandma 12-19-2013 08:55 PM

Our credit card company issued new cards . We had purchased a camera on Nov. 28. Just in time together caught. It looks like our account is ok, but it was nice to have the company look after us.

gale 12-20-2013 12:19 AM

I bought something there using my credit card on december 1st. I've been keeping a close eye on my account. I'm no stranger to cc fraud. It's happened to me more times than I care to remember. It's a giant pain in the butt.

EllieGirl 12-20-2013 03:03 AM

I honestly don't remember if I went to Target between those dates! I don't go that often.

CookyIN 12-20-2013 04:59 AM

I hope they catch whoever did this and make an example of them. Fraud of any kind affects all of us with higher prices.

That said, I have no qualms using my credit card anyplace. And yes, I have a Target card and shopped there during the affected dates. Most card companies these days are on top of fraud. I've had them call me to question a purchase and several times have had them send replacement cards due to a security breach (even though my card didn't appear to be affected).

My first brush with cc card theft happened with Discover. My bill had a slew of fraudulent purchases. They asked if I had any idea how my info had been stolen, took all the false charges off my bill with no hassle, and issued a new card.

A debit card is another matter entirely. I would NEVER use a debit card, because if that info is stolen the thief is able to empty money directly from your bank account. And I think that getting that squared away could be extremely difficult.

I don't shop at Target much but pay cash when I do. My Discover account was hacked after giving my number to an online shop. I actually didn't buy anything and asked for a credit. I got the credit and had someone use my Acct. # and a bunch of trouble. I think it is all okay now. I had my credit froze for ninety days. I got my credit reports and all is perfect.

BellaBoo 12-20-2013 06:38 AM

I went to Target one time last year and it was one day during the breach! Ugh. My bank has already sent out notices that they are on top of it. No pins were stolen just credit card info. The real trouble will come months from now after the info is sold on the black market and then re sold. It's not to run up your credit card the reason the info is sold. New accounts can be opened using the credit card info and bank loans obtained. Everyone needs ID fraud protection on all credit accounts. What I don't understand is no one ever gets prosecuted even if caught. I haven't found one report of any credit card ID theft ring being sent to prison just that they were shut down.

Such a bummer, I shop there alot.

Yes, it has happened to us also. It makes us much more aware of this kind of stuff. I read somewhere that they recirculate this card info seven years later. Not sure where I read it, but wow!

slbram17 12-20-2013 07:18 AM

Do you purchase the id fraud protection? Our bank would charge around $15 a month for that.

tessagin 12-20-2013 07:31 AM

I rarely have any luck finding what I'm looking for at Target! Just went there on Wednesday and asked a stock person for help. They said aisle 12. I asked where at in aisle 12, we were in aisle 12. Then she said some where down that way. I looked at her and said "you have no clue where it's at do you?" I walked away and out the door but not before I found a manager and complained. Mgr. was not happy! When I asked him if they had what I wanted he said not many child's sewing machines came in and if there were any in the store it would be in layaway. I left.

I found out that thru American Express, you can set up a temporary credit card if you are not familiar with whom your want to purchase from. You then fund the credit card with the price of the item you want to purchase. Then that number will not be able to be used again unless you place any more money in it. They seem to be in front of the fraud situation. I am really lucky because the credit card is free for life because of stock broker I use.

ptquilts 12-21-2013 01:06 PM

the way I see it, if your debit card is hacked and they empty your account, that is YOUR problem and you need to get the bank to help you. If your credit card is hacked, it is the credit card company's problem. Just deny the charges and let them go after the crooks. Your money is safe.

Dolphyngyrl 12-21-2013 01:21 PM

The debit card is dependent on your bank. I got my money back fast with my bank and debit card fraud, but they even watch your cards pretty well now and are also on top of it, at least my bank is, I had about 3 new cards issued to me this year then stopped using my card in gas station pumps and haven't had a problem since

gale 12-21-2013 01:48 PM

There is no way I'd trust a debit card. I think of it this way. Say I have $5000 in my account. I pay $3000 worth of bills. Someone steals my number and spends $3000. Bill payments might then bounce, and then you're in bad with that company. Not a chance I would take, personally.

auntpiggylpn 12-22-2013 05:56 AM

I rarely ever shop Target. But guess what? I was killing time before a hair appointment and went into Target. I made a $3 purchase on my debit card and I just got a notice from my bank that it was during the data breach. Grrrrrrr! My daily limit for purchases is greatly reduced and a new card is on its way to me. I would bet I haven't purchased anything at Target for more than a year before that.

gale 12-22-2013 09:42 AM

I got a notice from Chase. They said to just keep an eye on my transactions and they will do the same.

We don't either, but we did go once during the period. Luckily, we paid cash.

We have stopped using cards at gas stations too. I kept seeing where the info was being captured from the pumps. It is a nuisance sometimes but it is one less thing to think about when stuff like this hits the fan.

I haven't shopped at Target in months. My bank keeps a close tabs on our accounts.
Somebody got a hold of my husband's card and used it in New Mexico at a Dollar store.
All I could say was at least they were frugal about it....LOL

mommafank 12-22-2013 01:40 PM

And why did we stop using checks? Perhaps time to go back to them. My AMEX told us to monitor acct and they are monitoring accts as well. If there is activity then time for a new one.

toverly 12-22-2013 01:43 PM

Yes, I went to Target, 4 times. Luckily, I can keep an eye on my accounts. Target will have to do something awesome to get me back in the store.

I kind of think this might hurt them and their reputation.

A Dollar store?? Kind of funny, but I'm sure you all weren't laughing at the time.

They offered a 10% discount to every in store customer Saturday & Sunday to make up for the security breach. . .

I did hear that.

mommafank 12-23-2013 09:19 AM

I think it is wrong to say you will never shop there again. It happened to TJ Maxx and Marshall a few years back. I do not think people stopped shopping there. Only reason it happened to Target and not Walmart is because Target shoppers have the reputation of having more money available. It will happen again----just a toss up which store.

QuiltingVagabond 12-23-2013 11:56 AM

Our credit union is checking every account for Target transactions and is issueing new cards to every customer who could be potentially affected! Talk about going above and beyond!
