Is there an iron that doesn't leak?

I get so frustrated with my iron. When I am steaming something it leaks and casues a mess. Help, is there one that doesn't leak?

Tartan 03-23-2013 06:04 AM

I use my iron with no water in it and keep a mister bottle handy. Until my old iron dies, I will be using this method. I will probably pick up a cheap Walmart iron after that and use it until it dies. I just can't bring myself to buy an expensive iron that may not last.

mighty 03-23-2013 06:08 AM

I also do not put water in my iron. I use a spray bottle. Have never found an iron that does not at some point leak.

deedum 03-23-2013 06:12 AM

I have the black and decker classic iron! I love it. I love it so much in fact I bought a spare one. Walmart $24. I have not had any problems with irons leaking though. knock on wood.

I do the same thing. Can't handle the frustration of a leaking iron

quilter1 03-23-2013 07:03 AM

I have a Reliable Digital Velocity iron, it was pricey but the heat is great and it doesn't leak a bit.

IrishNY 03-23-2013 07:04 AM

Gotta echo the other posters. The solution to avoiding a leaky iron is not to ever put water in it - for me anyhow. My irons last for many years and I am convinced it's because I use a spray bottle for misting. I also thinks it works better than steam from an iron, but that's just me.

my-ty 03-23-2013 08:00 AM

Years ago my iron stopped misting - I tried to unclog it but was not successful. I love using a spray bottle and my hot iron. I can immediately switch between mist and dry ironing. I use starch/dry iron when I finish a block and mist/dry iron when I am piecing a block. I also never get burned from the steam!:)

My cheapie sunbeam didn't leak for 20 years! Now I have a "reliable" for the last year and so far so good : )

Love the Black & Decker classics. I look for them at estate sales and garage sales.

I do the same!

My old Classic B&D has been knocked off the table many times, on hard tile floor, and still works great. It's the one I take to classes and toss in the trunk of the car. I use the Reliable iron for steam and I have a dry iron that works the best when using starching and for fusing. Just like machines, I have an iron for different pressings.

joysewer 03-24-2013 04:12 AM

I recently bought a digital Black & Decker iron....$40........I used a 20% off coupon and Bed, Bath and Beyond and got $8 off of that. I love it and so far, have not had any leaking problem.

Z 03-24-2013 12:22 PM

I have had good luck with my Sunbeam Steam Master. The model that I got has a retractable cord which has kept it on
the ironing board with the falling off accidents. It also turns itself off after about 15 minutes.

I have this one too - it's Great.
The Rowenta I had was a leaker after only 9 months.

Chasing Hawk 03-24-2013 07:49 PM

An iron won't leak if you don't put any water in it. ..........LOL

I keep a mister bottle handy when I need to iron anything.

In a word------NO!!!!!!!!

BarbM32 03-25-2013 03:47 AM

I had one of those $100 irons which was expensive for me. Leaked like a seive. Bought one a Wal-Mart and happy with it. Then I was in Wear & Share, bought a haf size iron for $2 and now I have one just the right size for quilting no leaks.

citygirlsews 03-25-2013 04:17 AM

Stay away from the Rowenta Irons. They will all leak eventually. I finally got smart and bought a cheap iron at Walmart and it has already lasted longer than my last three Rowenta irons!

Marge611 03-25-2013 04:24 AM

Thank you all for your comments on the iron. I was going to break down and buy myself a "good" meaning expensive iron but now I think I'm just going to keep my old Black and Decker since it doesn't leak and spend that money on buying more material for a quilt.

quiltmom04 03-25-2013 04:34 AM

Yes, there's an iron that doesn't take water. I've seen it in the Vermont Country Store catalog. I bet that doesn't leak!

larry 03-25-2013 05:01 AM

I use a spray bottle and dry iron
have not found one that does not leak

Noiseynana 03-25-2013 05:34 AM

well, my little $10.00 walmart iron doesn't leak at all. My expensive one does.

Olivia's Grammy 03-25-2013 06:20 AM

I have an expensive Rowenta iron. It doesn't just leak it dumps the water. I contacted Rowenta, but since I waited until after the warrenty, they won't do anything. I like the burst of steam. I can't afford to replace expensive irons every year. Guess I'll be going to the mist and dry iron.

I bought the iron from Vermont Country Store (vermontcountrystore.com) and I love it. It heats up fast, gets plenty hot enough, stays hot and it is not a steam iron so it never leaks. Also a nice weight and size, take it to all the classes I teach. Love it!

dc989 03-25-2013 07:00 AM

I've had very good luck with Black and Decker too. I use water and just get an inexpensive model from Walmart.

feffertim 03-25-2013 07:42 AM

The reliable velocity irons do not leak or spit at all.

nena 03-25-2013 08:38 AM

I had the same problem . Got the Sunbeam Model #4267. LOVE it, Two years with out a leak so far.

I have the Vermont one as well. I would never buy another brand. Its a terrific iron.

I think the key to the iron problem is check with the directions on how to clean the steam area. I just forget about cleaning and my directions say once a month I should fill with water (plain tap, I think) and hold it over the sink and keep pushing the steam button that gives you a burst of steam and you should see the gunk that comes out. One direction says use distilled water and another place says use tap water. I end up using distilled water in mine.

tenngal 03-25-2013 02:13 PM

Mine leaks - just like every other brand I've tried.

MimiBug123 03-25-2013 02:30 PM

I have a cheapie Black and Decker from Wally world. It gets really hot and it doesn't leak, either. I don't keep water in it all the time, though. Sometimes I just feel the need to spray!

Mdaniels 03-25-2013 04:47 PM

My Black and Decker hasn't leaked yet.

KyKaren1949 03-25-2013 05:19 PM

I bought a Black and Decker and it didn't last 2 months. When I contacted the company, they wouldn't stand behind their product. The second iron I purchased was from Hamilton Beach. Within 6 months, it also leaked. I contacted them and they told me to select any iron whatsoever from the online catalog. I have had it for two years now with no leaking whatsoever. I will never buy another B and D product of any kind.

Sounds like the one we bought. No problems here either!

My life depend on IRON because I love wearing Cotton fabric, I always buy my Iron at Walmart, they're very reasonable,
of course Black and Decker on top of my list, and others is just as good as long as you take care of it, I put just little water and use spray bottle from the Dollar store. Just always have a spare ( Iron) You' ll never know when that thing will gonna die or stop working. I agree, even the expensive one Leak.

Mdaniels 03-27-2013 12:43 PM

This is very timely. I've been clenching my $50 Joanns gift card and waiting for a sale on the Oliso iron. They are supposed to be 30% off, which makes this purchase a little easier to swallow--but I am now re-thinking it. I'm still going to pay almost $100 for an iron that might leak. My BD is working fine. Maybe I will better spend my dollars on a binding machine by Simplicity. Also on sale.

My Costco iron was terrific until it just died. I threw on a coat and went to my corner hardware store where I bought a $14.99 iron. It has not leaked, steams up when I want it to and is a great deal. I think I'll buy a back up !!

I love my Rowenta. I use a spray bottle so no leaking problems, but I love the weight and heat of it. I've had it for 7 or 8 years and it's still going strong.

My friend had 3 of these irons, kept sending them back and finally got her money back from the company. She bought it at a quilt show direct from the vendor. The feet kept failing and it burned up her ironing board.
