You know, that is a really tough question.:? My hubby and I are having tea (while I read QB) so we're actually discussing this.

For us, we can't point exactly to a specific city or state, except to say that the further we get away from the Pacific Ocean the more uncomfortable we get. So, I would have to say: Inland (wherever that is) :)

I definitely would not be happy moving to dry desert type areas, and likely the people who live in that type of climate wouldn't be happy in my area of tall forests where everything is green because it takes lots of rain to have it like this. We do have a LOT of fabric stores though, so I'm set! :D

I really don't know. Becuase every place have it's own charming thing or better lovely people who live there...so I think every place is ok.. :D

Never say never. I think as soon as you commit to NOT doing something, then Murphy is devising a law that will make you review your committment. I love where I am now and wouldn't really move away from here. I KNOW that states with big bugs are out for me.

Being a military family you kinda get use to the thought of moving anywhere they send you. I know when my husband got his first set of orders I was so heart broken! We were supposed to move to Baumholder, Germany but due to the fact I was 8 months pregnant with our middle son they canceled his orders! I cried!

Growing up, my dad was in the Air Force and we moved a lot. The last place we landed was Oregon. At first I hated my parents for moving me here in, as I called it, the middle of nowhere. Now I don't think I would want to live anywhere else.

We were in Arizona this summer and I really couldn't live there. Thought I was gonna melt. I love it here in the Pacific NW. Rain and all.

I have a whole list.

New Orleans - humid, below sea level, fear of being disliked by voodoo practitioners, unwilling to whip off my bra for beads.

Washington, DC - I was afraid of terrorism before 9/11, also war, and figure it's still one of the most likely places for attacks. OTOH, I've been unemployed for so long now that if a job were to open up in DC, I'd probably go there.

Texas - humid, snakes

Florida - humid

North Carolina - only if they paid me well

Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx in NYC - crowded concrete jungles, polluted, expensive

and the suburb where I grew up

If places in other countries count, then I'd have to add:

No countries that treat women as less than equals.

No humid places, like much of Southeast Asia or the Brazilian rainforest.

I wouldn't move back to the town I grew up in. My ex was related to darn near everyone....even though we divorced in 1985, there's STILL too many people in that town that were related!!!! (I think there was a lotta in-breeding, too! :roll: ). I won't name the town either. Fact is, I won't live anywhere but Oregon. I've been to other states and have no desire to move to them. Now -- as a famous governor once said, come visit, don't stay. LOL Actually, I hate to see Oregon getting so crowded!!!

I know where I want to go next, hubby won't go, he's happy where we are. I'm happy too, that is until the snow flies. I want to be an artist living on a beach. Sandbridge VA calls my name all the time.

Is there a place where all is good? I've wondered- if all the states are in financial messes- is there a state that has managed itself well? That's where I want to be. (We are 100 days beyond having a budget in PA, our county is $30 million in debt and mired in judge scandals that the FBI will be here for years to unravel- we are an embarrassment.)

Well, here's a little story, the moral of which is, if you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans.

When we were young marrieds, my husband was with IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY (midway between NYC and Albany) in the mid-Hudson Valley.

After a while, I learned that IBM had a comparable research and development facility in San Jose, CA. In my parochial mind, Californa = earthquakes and I wanted no part of that! I made it quite clear to my DH that San Jose, CA, was NOT an option for our family. "No way will I live on the San Andreas fault!"

In those days, IBM also meant "I've Been Moved". Being my husband was in the research and development division, it was unlikely that we would ever move to California with IBM. Had he been in sales, that would be a different story.

Fast-forward a few years and IBM moved us -- to suburban Chicago. We were delighted as our young sons would then have the opportunity to spend more time with their grandparents and other family members.

We were "home". For example, even though the boys were still in grade school, it was a given that they would go to the U of I in Urbana, as their parents did. At least one week-end / month we were driving to Central Illinois or someone would visit us. It was great.

In 1978, my DH resigned from IBM and with a colleague, started a software company.

In 1982, they had an offer from a company in CALIFORNIA :( to buy the company.

"Do we have to move to California? It sucks! It has earthquakes! Why do we have to move?" I was not, and was determined to never be, again, a happy camper. I was insufferable. (We won't discuss the parenting model I exhibited to my boys!)

"Because I am the primary developer of the product and they want me there to manage the product."

"Where is this company located...in California?"

"Santa Clara."

"Isn't that close to San Jose...and that IBM facility?"

"Yes"

We moved to a town on the east side of San Francisco Bay. Lovely house, neighborhood, great schools. I have a 2700' tall peak in my front yard. We're about 15 miles from San Jose.

The rest of the story?

God must have heard me and my tantrum. You see, I don't live anywhere near the San Andreas fault. I live smack dab between the Hayward and the Calaveras faults. The Hayward fault is considered to be the most dangerous fault in CA as it is highly urbanized it's entire length. The Calaveras fault is "just over the hill" from my house -- about 5 miles as the crow flies.

But, I don't live on the San Andreas.

I've always had a picture of God in my mind in which he's just smiling. "What are you not going to do now, my child?"

Added blessing: we've re-connected with my Mom's cousin (who is only 8 yrs. older than I)and her family who have lived in San Jose 30+ years It's as if I've gained another sister and 4 nephews and a niece. Her kids and mine have formed a very strong bond over the years.

Oh, and California's not such a bad place to live...if you can afford it (and we're re-visitng that question...)

I would never want to move back to California. We lived there for a while while DH was in the Marines. He loved it, I hated it. I'd rather not move back to New Mexico. I don't ever want to move to Florida. I'd never want to move to New York City. We went out there on vacation and the drivers were incredibly rude. Definitely not a place for me.

Well? That's an easy one at the moment....
The ONLY state that I would refuse to live in would be Hawaii. Ok, go ahead and groan...Nope, been there, done that...too expensive!
Give me the lower 48,,,ok, include Alaska in there because I could probably do Alaska too.

Any place where I have to drive in circles daily and end up where I started an hour later, nope, not for me! I want the open roads so I can travel where and when I want.
My perfect place, if there is such a thing would be a farmlet (about 5-10 acres) outside of a nice town where I could have my gardens and just be peaceful with the world. I don't want the hustle and bustle of city life, but if the city life were an hour away, then that's ok...I could drive there to stress-up, then go back to my haven and de-stress.
I want my 4 seasons back too!

Well, Kings Bay (Kingsland/St Marys, GA) might pop up on the list. I like it there. That's right on the border of FL, about 40 min from Jacksonville. Nice area, not too bad, but I want 4 seasons!

Probably Florida. The humidity, to me is unbearable. I like to be outside too much.

I'm a southern girl, born and raised, through and through but if I could move anywhere else it would probably be to Savannah, Georgia. Then my son, who lives in Florida wouldn't have so far to drive when he came to visit me.

Funny you should mention this area, I will be going there w/dh for 3-4 months the first of Nov. Hubby has a job there with his company. He travels for his work.

If you don't like humidity & heat DON'T move to south Louisiana.

I like that area. Is built up now, but about 20 yrs ago, they had Walmart, very small, Piggly Wiggly, Winn Dixie and that was about it.
Now they have a Superwalmart, Publix, Lowes, Home Depot ( I think), Sonic (yum!) A & W....all sorts of stores! Really built up!

I do have a nice place to stay when I go to visit there. On a lake, peaceful and just serene....Love it!

I am here reading your answer and thinking that you are describing the town where I live. Did you know I am selling my house? It is perfect for you. eight minutes from everything...hospital, post office, chuch, you name it. 2.5 acress, no neighbors too close and the closest one is a contractor who do repairs and cleans snow, 4 seasons well marked (northern NY, of course) 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, finished basement, 600 acress of nothing around the property, and the worst traffic jam you will ever find may be behind a tractor in the summer, or behind a snow blower in the winter, and all he is doing is clearing the path just for you. I wish. Unfortunately I need to move on right now. I love this place and the last thing I want to do is leave (I wish I could leave but hold on to the house, because I do LOVE it) but life gets on the way and don't let you do the things you want.

This is easy, we recently have been searching for a new job, new city etc after 12 yrs of employment and layoff time to start new. I had an instant oh no you cant even GO THERE :

I love southern & southeastern Missouri for touring, but I don't think that I would ever live there.

l. My home state of Massachusetts
2. Texas, there 's something in the water down there
3. I don't do heat and humidity and snakes and alligators

Absolutely beautiful state but.. its sorta REAL cold there. Spent one Christmas holiday there with family and think I could do it shoulder seasons. Went to a Wells Wedding in August.. OMG was it a tad hot and humid.. never would have thought. Of course I lived in AZ where we were lucky enough to have dinner plate sized spiders come into our home and snakes .. no poisonious snakes in Maine right? and scorpians was no biggie. Heat without humidity is much easier to handle.

I wouldn't go back to California, born & raised there,it was great. (60's 70's 80's even most of the 90's) 'Sigh' things have changed.

We moved here (northern Arkansas) five years ago and I love it, the longer we live hear the better I like.

I think Chicago,NY, any big metro area would cause a problem with me.

i too am a marine corp brat and moved every two years until my dad retired.live in florida, calif , tenn, ohio(while he was in Vietnam) Washington State.traveled alot of places.I can't think of ever leaving Az.love it here,But I also miss Nashville Tenn.lived there after I had gotten married the first time and loved it there,but can do without the snow

Since no one else has asked yet, why are these your "never" places? Why Wisconsin? Not just because of its winter, surely, since there are many other wintry places you didn't list.

Honestly, I wouldn't want to live anywhere but here. We live in a wonderful college town. Everything you want is within driving distance. (Chicago is only an hour away). You can catch a train, bus or drive to two large airports. (Great for flying to NYC to see our DD). We have lots of parks, walking paths and restaurants. Winter can be challenging. We do live in the snow belt. But, it is beautiful when the snow piles up. We do have a four seasons. The leaves are truly beautiful today.
The city does a great job clearing and we are never snowed in for more than a day. Maybe I should work for the tourism board. :lol:
When DD comes home for a visit, she is bored crazy. That is exactly why I love it. (And my Granddaughters live here too. :-)

My list is the northeast, too cold , the southwest, too hot, the northwest, too wet and the upper midwest, too cold. I'll stay in the midwest or the south. Sure there's the occasional tornado but you get plenty of warning most times.

Oh, dear---I have to tell you that you did not miss anything at all by not getting to live in Baumholder!! We spent two years there and all I can say about it is-that is two years of my life I will never get back again!!

And being a military spouse I learned to never-say-never, too. I guess I would live anywhere, as long as I have my husband by my side. BUT, I am happiest right here, right now. :D

I would not be thrilled about moving anywhere colder than Illinois. It is plenty cold for me. I start whining in October and don't stop until May. Other than that, I'm flexible.

If you want to pick a spot I'd love to move to, I'm voting for North Carolina. Specifically the Wilmington - Carolina Beach area. It is my absolute favorite place ever.

Yeah, I HATE living in Houston. HATE HATE HATE HATE!!!! But I'm stuck here because of family.

I loved DC. Absolutely loved living there.

Personally, wouldn't go to ANY big city. Moved here from a very large, crimefilled, traffic snarled city to the peacefulness of the countryside. If we didn't have ticks, chiggers and tornados everyone would be here!!! :lol:
