... but when you're backing out of the driveway and out of the car window you see a cloud of pink and then purple, it's hard not to be impressed.

Now I'm glad I let the asters grow!

Lindsey 09-30-2011 10:02 AM

PHlox one of my favorites..

Favorite Fabrics 09-30-2011 10:13 AM

I have a bunch of phlox too... just not along the driveway!

These are just asters. The pink flew in from the back yard, blown from a plant that I had purchased. The purple is the native wild New England Aster.

Now the two have hybridized and I have several shades that are in between!

jmabby 09-30-2011 10:43 AM

Phlox are easy to grow and really give a great show of color.

Chicca 09-30-2011 11:38 AM

Those are beautiful! How lucky you are to have such brilliant colors to admire every day. Thanks for sharing.

Yes. And I wish mine didn't get spider mites! Anybody know how to deal with those? I notice that they are also afflicting all the ground ivy in my lawn. Not that I care about the ground ivy, just that if I spray the phlox and don't spray the lawn, the mites will probably just move on into the phlox again.

And I should also be thankful to the deer that munched these asters down at just the right time. Otherwise they would be a foot taller and falling over sideways. It turned out to have been very effective pruning and timed better than I could have done.

However...

I will NOT thank the deer for pruning my shrubs last winter!

twixbar 09-30-2011 01:42 PM

Beautiful.

MinnieKat 09-30-2011 02:48 PM

All wildflowers were weeds at one time ... most are beautiful!

sewgull 09-30-2011 03:03 PM

Pretty flowers. Nature always show her beauty.

Tartan 09-30-2011 03:18 PM

I let the little white flowers with the yellow centers grow too. I know they are weeds but they look like tiny daisies. Pretty even if they are weeds!

mim 09-30-2011 03:23 PM

I am trying to get up the courage to dig some up by the side of the road. Maybe I should think of it as "rescue" The bad thing is that I have a vanity plate on my car and people would know who it is

THERE ARE NOT WEEDS JUST WILD FLOWERS.

ree-nee 10-01-2011 03:57 AM

I would love to have some seeds from those weeds! :)

mummadee 10-01-2011 03:59 AM

Weeds are in the definition, a weed is something that grows where it isn't wanted. Orchids in a pineapple field are weeds. These aren't weeds as long as you love them.

didi 10-01-2011 04:03 AM

Very Very Pretty!!!!!!

May in Jersey 10-01-2011 04:05 AM

Really beautiful weeds. We have some 3ft high weeds in our backyard garden that are beginning to flower and hope they are as beautiful as yours.

shortstuff 10-01-2011 04:15 AM

We always controlled spider mites with dawn dish soap. Squirting a bit in a fertilizer sprayer, finish filling it with water, then water the plants with it.

The definition of a weed is a plant growing where it is not wanted... if you want it there, it's a wildflower!! I have some stunning flowering plants that are most definitely weeds. I plant one, and suddenly they are everywhere! I love asters.

damaquilts 10-01-2011 05:29 AM

I love wild flowers. We had ageratum in the yard in GA I loved it my daughter thought is was just a weed. I loved the wild morning glories in the field across the street growing up the corn stalks, and we did have some phlox and wild daisies too.

I don't think there is a garden in the world that can compete with looking out over a meadow filled with wild flowers in the spring.

Hooray for Mother Nature!

sandpat 10-01-2011 05:34 AM

My gosh...those are beautiful!

DanaNVa 10-01-2011 05:41 AM

What you call weeds, my brother calls "volunteers." They volunteered to grow where ever.

michelehuston 10-01-2011 05:42 AM

Those are very lovely weeds!!!

emmah 10-01-2011 05:53 AM

They are about the only color left here in Northern NY till the leaves start turning...any minute now!

Tweety2911 10-01-2011 06:12 AM

Lovely picture, thanks for posting and giving me a smile on the dismal rainy day.

BuzzinBumble 10-01-2011 06:29 AM

Wow! Gorgeous! Nature often has beautiful surprises in landscape design. ;) Seeing pink wild asters is quite a treat in our part of western NY, how wonderful that your purples had hybridized seedlings!

Glassquilt 10-01-2011 07:39 AM

One of those plants that aren't much to look at individually but gorgeous in a mass planting.

GlitzyMe 10-01-2011 08:07 AM

Mother Nature does it best.

rosiewell 10-01-2011 08:46 AM
