For me, its not a matter of whether or not its historic. It's a matter of having respect for the fact that someone spent their time to make something special for you rather than just going to the store and picking up a gift card. I guess that's why I'm very selective about who I make quilts for. Most people are not respectful. And children are not taught respect for anything except money anymore.

The only real thing that horrifies me is when the gift quilt is put up and "saved". I can't stand the thought of all that work being shelved. If it is shelved it is unloved and means nothing to anyone. I would rather it be misused. Then I can make more.

Yes me too. I saw two full size quilts in the back of a truck and they were being used to cover furniture that was being moved. |
For my inlaws 40th wedding anniversary I cross-stitched a beautiful keepsake for them all framed and ready to hang.
My MIL said "Oh how fancy" . Never saw it again!! They are both long gone and I never did find out what happened to it. I'm guessing she didn't like it b/c our taste was very different. When I think of it now it just makes me chuckle. |
I made a queen sized, hand quilted white work for a wedding gift. Took me over a year to do it.

My sil did that with her kids plastic toys before she would let them use them, after they used them, before they played with them again. They were so bleached out the kids lost interest in them.

That quilt - from your sons shirts - was a part of their courtship, part of the love story. It kind of made you part of that! Sometimes we have to think about stuff that goes on in our lives in a different way.

The worst one I can think of is so heartbreaking for me - my grandmother was an avid quilter and when she got dementia my hoarder aunt took all of my grandmother's things and "stored" them. All of grandmother's completed quilts and work-in-progress got put into a leaky shed, mostly in paper bags or pillowcases. Rats and rain and mildew destroyed Everything except for one plastic tote full of wool squares (which I now have). Dozens of completed and irreplaceable quilts were completely destroyed. I cried when my cousin showed me photos, I couldn't help it.
