Well, we hit about 62 about 6 am today and expect it to be 99+ before the day is over. We normally have a 40 degree swing during the day, winter and summer. It gets really hard to dress for the day.

I am amazed that utilities cost so much for some of you. We have swamp (evaporative) coolers during the summer because it is so dry. And they cost very little to run. During the winter I have natural gas forced air and only pay about $100 at the most for the two coldest months.

Cutting, loading truck, unloading truck, splitting, stacking and finally burning :)

Guess I did miss a few didn't I :)

I hate the unloading, splitting, stacking

Rann 09-19-2011 08:08 AM

It's still in the 90's here so we don't have that problem. Usually a cold (cooler) snap in Oct and not much else til late Nov or Dec.

Lady-T 09-19-2011 08:20 AM

We have a hydraulic log splitter so actually that's the ONLY part I don't mind!

Hear Hear Our rule----is not until October, but it also got down to 34 and the heat come on. I refuse to freeze or even be too cold --- too old and the cold penetrates my bones. As much as I have tried, Mother Nature refuses to listen to me.

gotta-sew 09-19-2011 11:17 AM

I am sooo nt ready for the furnace yet. I try to not turn it on until Halloween. That is usually the first fire in the fireplace moment. My ac is sitll going strong. I suppose soon I won't need it. I think if I opened the windows at night I wouldn't need it. But my allergies say leave em closed!

Lynnie!! Novemeber?! Goodness. I'm going to try to make it to my birthday - mid-October but November. You are good. On the other hand, I do have a little guy to think about. Even if I don't get the furnace going for the house he will have his little room heater going probably the end of this month. Too cold for kidlets in the morning.

From Skaneateles Lake - the most beautiful of the Finger Lakes...people don't expect the state of NY to be so cold and snowy. We get Lake Effect snow from 2 of the Great Lakes.

What does being weak have to do with being cold? Our cavemen ancestors built a fire when it got cold; shouldn't we have that much sense? froggyintexas

froggyintexas, you are so right. Although I can usually make it until the end of October before the furnace comes on. If I get cold.....you bet I will flip the switch. But so far my AC is still needed. We often have what they call an Indian Summer. My reluctance to the furnace is mearly not wanting to give in to winter as yet. Shall I share...I hold off turning on the AC in the spring as well. I love that brief time when we need neither.

What is a swamp cooler? I've heard that term before, but never knew what it was.

it pumps water over pads then pulls air through them - works great here where we have basically no humidity - not so well in the damper areas

gah! was 38 this am -- according to my nifty thermomenometer it was 93 when I picked the kids up from school -- I dislike this time of year

darlene37 09-19-2011 02:54 PM

I don't know when I will put the heat on. I usually have the heat at 60 or 62 all winter. It's not so hard to wear a sweatshirt. My hubby has a few quilts if he gets that cold.

We use swamp coolers here too, but I need a new water line.

Growing up our furnace was not lit until there was frost on the ground, no ifs, ands or buts. I HATED it. I swore when I grew up I would never be cold in my own home, and I've kept that promise to myself. My house is NEVER below 74-hubby has learned it is so much easier to pay the bill than live with a cold, cranky wife.

Yes, our heater is on, and has been randomly on since August.

ShabbyTabby 09-19-2011 04:54 PM

We are still using the A/C here in Vegas....today was about 98 which is cooler than it has been. We actually had a fairly mild summer for us...the highest temp was 110. We usually don't need the heater until almost Christmas.

dljennings 09-19-2011 04:56 PM

we keep our house @ 60 degrees during the week and 65 on the weekend... cause we're cheap..., oops, i mean frugal

Anna.425 09-19-2011 05:30 PM

We try to wait until October 15th before we turn on the furnace. We didn't make it last year and it is day by day this year. Last year I knocked on DDs room and when she opened her door I found that she had purchased a space heater. :)

auniqueview 09-19-2011 06:52 PM

GrannyMom....

I think your location may have just come out of hiding, lol. It was pretty nice down here today, not too hot. I look forward to cooler weather, but it has to be cold, really cold, for me to break down and turn on the heat in Florida.

Jacqui you crack me up!

sandwich child 09-19-2011 07:09 PM

WOW! And everyone thinks Colorado is cold? It was a balmy 85 in Denver today.

Grambi 09-19-2011 08:07 PM

Still have the a/c going here. I can't wait until it's cool enough to open the windows and hope we don't have to go straight from a/c to heater.

sylviasmom 09-20-2011 01:12 PM

In Ca, the heat went off mid March, went on mid October. Now, we are in Co, weather is just starting to get cool and we have had only one evening when it was cold even to warrant heating. We invested in portable electric heaters. Brought one in to heat one room and it heated the whole house. And we have two furnances! Guess we won't be using one furnace much this winter. The gas company wants to raise their rates 20% this winter, hopefully not.

scrappy2 09-20-2011 04:52 PM

I can't believe you waited so long to turn on the heat!
I'm a whimp.

scrappy2 09-20-2011 04:56 PM

Hope you stay toastie this fall & winter.

sammy89 09-21-2011 03:29 PM

ours system is on automatic if the house gets colder then 65 the heat comes on and if it get hotter then 75 the air kicks in we dont need much heat where we live anyway

katigirl 09-21-2011 11:55 PM

Yeah, I've had mine on a few nights already. Just seems like the cold gets to us more than it used to I guess.

Winkee 09-22-2011 05:27 PM

Thats why I live in NC. I grew up in Saugerties NY and it is too cold.
