It's a challenge we play up here every year. Snow can actually fall in September and we had 3 MAJOR snowstorms up until Memorial Day just a few years back. My sister-in-law refuses to turn it on until Oct. 1st - I am weak and I caved. The overnight temperature was about 34 and the daytime high barely into the 60's. The house got down to 65 degrees and I turned the heat on.......
From Skaneateles Lake - the most beautiful of the Finger Lakes...people don't expect the state of NY to be so cold and snowy. We get Lake Effect snow from 2 of the Great Lakes.

loves_2_quilt 09-18-2011 09:31 AM

I would have turned the heat on too! Our highs and lows aren't that yet, but I am a sissy and want it some what warm. We haven't turned on the heat yet, but the air doesn't come on now.

Sadiemae 09-18-2011 09:32 AM

My heat came on, but I got up and turned the thermostat way down so it would go back off. Can't afford to pay the heating bill this early...

donnajean 09-18-2011 09:34 AM

It has to be Oct. before I switch over to heat as well. I like it cool when I sleep & we are still getting to the 60's during the day.

sunni 09-18-2011 10:02 AM

I believe in being warm and comfortable. I haven't had to turn the heat on yet, but came close. At this time of the year I will try an extra blanket when I am watching tv, if that doesn't work, the heat will be turned on :)

It is very pretty where you live :) I love the finger lakes. My kid's stepmother has family in your town.

jaciqltznok 09-18-2011 10:02 AM

you big sissy....hehehe...I would have turned it on long before it hit 68! One can not let moisture get into the computer or the fabric you know!!!

Glassquilt 09-18-2011 10:06 AM

DH is on blood thinners so when the house got to 62 I turned the heat on. That's the official story.

Rose L 09-18-2011 10:11 AM

We've been in the 30's at night and 50's during the day. We turned the heater on (we don't have whole house furnaces in this part of the country since there is no natural gas). We turn it up just enough to take the chill off in the morning and at night before bed time. Other wise, the sweaters have come back out and an extra blanket has been put on the bed. It is waaay too early for using much propane yet. We save that for when it's MINUS 30F. Ha!

Quilter7x 09-18-2011 10:15 AM

We have turned our heat on also, but just to warm up the house early in the morning. I also believe in being comfortable, not going by what the date is on the calendar.

virtualbernie 09-18-2011 10:19 AM

I find the older I get the less I can tolerate cold. I haven't turned on the heat yet but I did break out the winter pj's.

Judiw 09-18-2011 10:20 AM

We burn wood here in an outdoor furnace and my husband started it last Friday. We do have a propane fireplace and regular propane furnace but try not to overdo using that. It was down to 28* in the am and in the 50's during the daytime. Supposedly going to be a little warmer this week. Normally the big furnace doesn't get started until Oct. 15th or thereabouts. Hate to be cold...or too warm either. We went from AC to heat in a couple weeks.

mayme 09-18-2011 10:24 AM

DH turned the heat on one morning this week. I turned it down and built a small fire in the wood stove which I did a few mornings this week.

lynnie 09-18-2011 10:26 AM

i live on Long Island NY and REFUSE to turn on the heat till Nov. My dh on the other hand is a wimp when it comes to being cold. he wants it on no matter what. i tell him, i'm a quilter, use the talent that god gave me.

orangeroom 09-18-2011 10:26 AM

We like our home 70* year round. We live in upstate NY, just below Lake Ontario. Our heat has been on a few times at night already.

Grannymom 09-18-2011 10:43 AM

guess you don't want to hear that it's 82 beautiful degrees... puffy clouds, breeze, ...

I can put up with 3 months of high electric bills (@ $242 for AC), a whole lot better than a $400 gas bill for 8 or 9....

our TOTAL LP cost last winter was something like $365 and that includes the $50 yearly tank rental.

AlwaysQuilting 09-18-2011 10:55 AM

I refuse to turn the heat on until I've paid off the a/c bills. So that means Nov 1 usually.
Is there anywhere on earth where it stays comfortable temp night and day and they don't need heaters or a/c??? I want to move there.

I lived down south of the Mason Dixon line for 20 years with my Navy husband. I found those beautiful autumn temps came with temperatures and unbearable (to the big wuss - me!!) humidity in the long summers - way too much above my tolerance point. I lived in Virginia Beach and Tampa. I am a WUSS when it comes to humidity and heat - I really would take our 2 to 3 inches of snow an hour before those southern climates. You can always pile clothes on, but there are only so many clothes you can take off! :)

irishrose 09-18-2011 11:32 AM

AlwaysQuilting, the only place I know that fits your criteria is San Diego, CA. It has the most temperate climate I've seen.

My heat is on. I can't stand to be cold when I'm indoors. It's not as high as I'd like, but 70 during the day and 64 overnight is doable.

hobbykat1955 09-18-2011 12:44 PM

We broke down and put heat on 2 days ago...Between the cold and the damp, neithe of us could stand it anymore...With the price of Oil going up, husband keeps a tally yr from yr and it cost us 2000 more then the previous yr...God only knows what the high prices will do to us this yr.

TexasSunshine 09-18-2011 12:50 PM

We are still running the AC, still in the high 80's.

Pam B 09-18-2011 12:51 PM

We are in central IN. Last May, we went from needing our furnace one day to needing the a/c the next. I swear, two weeks ago, the exact opposite happened! We, however, have not yet turned on our furnace. In fact, we just were just talking about how we need to get the furnace guy out to do yearly check and cleaning one of these days. I always say I am going to wait till Nov 1 but it is generally closer to mid-Oct. We do have a couple small auxiallary heaters (one in the lvg room and one in our bathroom). I absolutely cannot stand a cold bathroom! Hopefully, it will warm back up into the mid0-70s for the next few weeks! What a weather year!

Granny Quilter 09-18-2011 01:28 PM

The high here yesterday was 60. But right now I have had my swamp cooler on for about an hour. Getting cold, so I need to turn it off.

blueangel 09-18-2011 01:31 PM

We haven't got through paying for a high electric bill and I don't want to start paying for gas yet.

quilter68 09-18-2011 01:33 PM

Growing up we had a coal furnace in the (basement) cellar. That is not something to be started up early in the fall. What I remember the most was the mornings when my Mother would turn on the kitchen oven and it was so warm getting dressed. This kept the furnace off for at least a month. Never had air-conditioning. BTW, if you are renting the landlord has to put the heat on from 10/15 to 5/15.

I own so use whatever I want.

CoyoteQuilts 09-18-2011 01:33 PM

Hey miniturequilt! I so remember the days. I have family in the Homer area and I was in Groton until my warm move to AZ..... Sorry, I don't miss the days :)

GORGEOUS area you are in!! Been through AZ a couple times and loved the scenery, but it was also in the winter, so no need to deal with high temps. I am just a first class wuss when it comes to higher temperatures. Summer in upstate NY should be having to put a sweatshirt on in the evening...........I love it that way!

Maggiemay 09-18-2011 02:52 PM

I am not one to suffer so I would turn on the heat too! Not that I need it too much here, but we did live in Syracuse for 4 yrs before we moved here so I understand! The Finger Lakes region of NY is one of the prettiest places I know of & in the fall is so beautiful it can take your breath away! We loved Skaneateles!

jrharry 09-18-2011 05:11 PM

No need to turn on the heat in California! I live about 3 hrs north of Sacramento and its 6:00 P.M. and 94 degrees. Opening deer season this weekend and just to hot. We are all electric so the bill is very expenses in the summer with the a/c $650 in July and $595 in August, plus we have a pool. We have a wood stove for the winter so the bill is very low. One year it was 116 in the summer and then 10 below with wind chill factor in the winter. Other than being an expensive place to live its a beautiful area.

mom-6 09-18-2011 06:34 PM

One reason I liked living on Guam was the temperature range - low 68, high 88. Of course there was the humidity, but the sea breeze was delightful.

Lady-T 09-19-2011 03:00 AM

At 65° we still have the windows open! :)
We heat with wood and don't build our first fire of the season until December.
Then we only stoke it until around 3:00 or 4:00 in the afternoon....let it die out. We like it cool for sleeping.
In the coldest winters, we awaken to temps of 50° IN the house!
Good way to get you "Up & Movin" every morning!!

MaryKatherine 09-19-2011 03:10 AM

During those chilly spells, we'll turn on the gas fireplace in the living room, in the evening. Otherwise I tell DH to put a sweater on, or get off the computer and move.
Heartless he calls me!!

jeaninmaine 09-19-2011 03:16 AM

My legs cramp when they're cold so I've put a heater in the bedroom for the last couple of nights.

Yooper32 09-19-2011 04:35 AM

Old bones get cold. Fact! I gave up the morning it was 35° and set the thermostat at 64 and still was discovered a few days ago sitting at computer with sweats, long micro-fiber robe and MITTENS on, not to mention socks and my Wicked Good sheepskin slippers. The utility bills here just eat up every cent you have.

Carol Ann 09-19-2011 05:18 AM

Lynnie, love that one. Does he have his own quilt?

sarahconner 09-19-2011 05:28 AM

We rarely get snow. I've been in Fl since 1980 and it snowed for 10 min in 1987 and 20 min Dec 26, 2010. I don't do cold well. Stay warm

shnnn 09-19-2011 05:43 AM

It is 63 in my living room right now... but I am still leaving my windows open at night and running the ac for a few hours in the afternoon. We added an extra blanket to the beds and deal with the morning chill. I hate having to run the heat at night and ac during the day.

catmcclure 09-19-2011 06:01 AM

I now live near San Francisco. I used to live in AZ. In AZ it was 60's in the winter and 110 to 120 in the summer. This summer in S.F. we only had the air conditioner on once, but we've had the heat on twice. In the mornings it's been low 60's. Too cold for me right now. It finally warmed up for about a week and it's mid-September.

Becky Mc 09-19-2011 06:29 AM

To bad we couldn't have bottled some of the heat from this summer that we all complained about for this winter. I just ordered my first load of wood and hate to think about staring the wood furance up. So I hold off as long as I can. If I jump the gun and start it to early and it gets warm I just waste wood ($$$) and it isn't easy to start and shut down. It also heats my hot water durning the winter so I can shut off my water heater. They say wood heat heats you 2 times once when you are stacking it and then your house.

Lady-T 09-19-2011 06:43 AM

We cut our own wood - so guess it heats us 4 times!

Cutting - loading truck - stacking @ home - then heating our house.

OH man all the talk of winter .. we have had more rain where I live (western slope of CO)than this town has seen in a very long time. I guess I am ready for the first snowfall ( I have brought the sweaters out, washed em and folded em and put em on the shelf to be worn), we are currently fixing up the outside and the fireplace for winter, got the plastic handy, just gotta do a weekend of it. Gotta go get some firewood for the ol fireplace that we use day and night, cheaper than gas or electric for sure ! Just kinda sad to see summer go for sure !
